Thursday night I saw Lucy Kaplansky in Lawrence KS. I first started listening to her because I liked her backup singing with John. It was a wonderful concert in a beautiful church sanctuary and I am looking forward to her new release in the fall. I was pleasantly surprised to find she had "A Nod to Bob'" - the Dylan tribute album which wont be released till May....it is terrific! I have given a lot of thought to the "favorite" song from TCYK....I just can't pick one. I love them all. My grandbabies are about the same ages as John's children (boy 1st, then girl) so when I hear "Over There" I see my son-in-law who is a tender, loving father; "Around the House" applies at my house or theirs....they are so busy. I cried the 1st time I listened to "When You Walk In".....I felt as though I had confided in John 3 years ago as I went through my divorce...even my mother was blown away by that song, as she was my rock through that painful time. Wisheries, Oh Abraham, Saint's Complaint... all strike me as pure genius. Don't mean to gush but have been listening to TCYK repeatedly since the day it was released. I went to Hastings at noon....asked for it...the kid finally looked it up in the 'puter & said they had received 1 copy (good old St Joe). Told him it was mine and we searched through a shopping cart full of new CD's to find it. Lawrence KS is trying to get John booked for this fall....I have my fingers crossed. It was a wonderful concert! John was in excellent form. At one point a little kid in the front row asked why he always shook his guitar? John responded with a very funny, clever improvisation. Was anybody else from the list there at the first show? I'd love to hear impressions of both the first and second shows. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 14:33:15 EST From: SMOKEY596@aol.com Subject: Re: Nod to Bob Mary, I was listening to John's new CD on the computer here as your email came through. :-) I really think it's his best in a long time, much better than the previous two, at least to me. I'm so glad I went to see him last week, and I'm sitting here wishing I could relive it instead of having to clean the house. :-( Oh well, I have the CD to listen to. :-) SMOKEY "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?"bG.W. John then turned his guitar over so it looked like he was shaking something out from the inside. He said that sometimes the notes get caught inside and cause a waxy buildup. He explained that although some people prefer the waxy buildup, he did not. He then went on to say that the amplifier cord that was attached to his guitar was really a suction hose to further remove the stuck notes. It sucks the notes and puts it in his little equipment panel. He said that it was digital equipment and then something else that I don't remember, but it all ended up that the shaking of the guitar was the analogue method. I didn't want to explain all of this for two reasons. First, I don't know if I remember it all and second, you would have had to be there for the Gorka magic to bring the story alive. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 15:14:45 EST From: SMOKEY596@aol.com Subject: Re: L.A. concert >>>I didn't want to explain all of this for two reasons.B First, I don't know if I remember it all and second, you would have had to be there for the Gorka magic to bring the story alive.<<< No, no, no! Through an email to the web site, I met someone (Paul) who went to both the Santa Monica shows last night and he said they were great. He is meeting my husband and I tomorrow night for our second Gorka show in just three weeks. VERY excited...we have gone two years between shows in the past so this is really special. Paul says the stage is about two inches off the ground and we can literally out our feet up on the stage. Maybe we will be close enough to catch some of those floating music notes as they fall out of John's guitar..... When we saw John in Chicago a few weeks back, he mentioned that he hadn't come up with openings for the new songs yet...I am looking forward to his new explanations! Welcome to the list, Gina!
