Since we have FINALLY reached the official release date (March 13, 2001!) of John Gorka's newest CD, "The Company You Keep" (Woooohooooooo!!!), I will now share with you my review of "TCYK" as submitted to fellow JG list member Joe DeRouen for his new cyber magazine, "e-This!". Our own Paula-Bryn has also submitted a review of "TCYK", and Joe tells us that he intends to publish BOTH of them in "e-This!"! COOL!!! Please be sure to "run, don't walk" to your nearest CD store in order to get your copy of "TCYK" today, and then come back here and tell us all about it! And, in order to take a look at "e-This!" (including nude pictures of "Broccoli Spears") and to consider subscribing to it, please click on this link http://ethismag.com/index.html and wander around in this cool "cyberzine" for a while - I think you'll really enjoy your visit. Incidentally, Joe; what is the publication date of this month's "e-This!"? Thanks! Steve "The Company You Keep" If you know Gorka like I know Gorka, then you're bound to appreciate his latest CD entitled "The Company You Keep" due for official release on March 13, 2001. I couldn't wait until then, so I ordered mine directly from Red House Records and have been listening to it incessantly ever since it arrived last week. Not only has John's voice continued to improve markedly, but the varied selection of songs and his sense of humor are further on the upswing as well! Gorka comes at us with fourteen musical poems, some of which have been around for awhile and have now made it onto this particular release. "TCYK" opens with "What Was That", combining Gorka's rich baritones with Kathleen Johnson's flattering harmonies to produce a peppy tune about learning how to forgive and forget and move on with one's life. The pace slows a little with "A Saint's Complaint" which reminds us that "sometimes the only compensation for doing the right thing is knowing that you did". Next, "Oh Abraham" is an ode to inspired leadership and the possibility of winning elected office, and it is one which demonstrates a greater vocal range for this veteran singer of possibly less challenging pieces in the past. It's back to more harmonizing - this time with none other than Mary Chapin Carpenter - when the two of them sing "When You Walk In" and John explains that his friend did nothing to deserve her bad fortune and mistreatment. "Shape of the World" is classic Gorka, utilizing his clever turn of a phrase such as; "Maybe it's just the shape of the world I'm in . . . " to its ultimate conclusions. Patty Larkin doesn't sing in this one, but she's right there with him on the electric guitar. "Morningside" features yet another "Gorkaplansky" (Gorka + Kaplansky) installment of honesty about what the future holds for us. Probably the most revealing of all fourteen songs, "When I Lost My Faith" allows John to demonstrate how he has matured to the point of understanding that he can't do it all by himself and needs the help of others to produce his best work. And, when considering the combination of talent on this particular CD, it has been a lesson well-learned for him. "Joint of No Return" is another spirited song utilizing a truckstop backdrop and again featuring Kathleen Johnson's rousing ability to keep up with John across the pavement and on down the road. Next, anyone who knows anything about folk music will instantly recognize the soulful "Let Them In" because it has been covered by so many artists since its original release several years ago. Yes, that's Jennifer Kimball and the inimitable Lucy Kaplansky singing along with John on this one. "Over There" is truly the best example of the "newest" John Gorka persona; totally dedicated husband and father who sings about his young son; "Who's that little boy over there, With the spoon in his hand and the food in his hair? " Along with his newborn daughter, this is obviously the company that John prefers to keep these days. My favorite, "Hank Senior Moment", is the shortest song on the disc and it is simultaneously funny and poignant, particularly to those of us who are old enough to remember the real Hank Williams, Sr. In effectively replicating a little of the Hank, Sr. mystique, John also treats us to just a small dose of that famous yodel. Ani DiFranco helps John pick up the pace again as "Around the House" makes you want to get up and dance around with them as they deliver a message about perpetual motion. "Wisheries" is, by far, one of the funniest of the new songs, and the one which best exemplifies John Gorka's ability to rhyme almost anything in order to remain "poetic" but, more importantly, to get a laugh. Many of us have heard John sing "People My Age" at one of his 150 annual concert appearances, and this song has finally made it as the last and funniest one on this nearly perfect CD. What is the down side? What did I not like about "The Company You Keep"? Well, it could've been a two-CD set with fourteen more of John Gorka's nearly perfect songs . . . What she said! Could never top Bryn's review. Although I did keep a set list and like Bryn, was happy to hear many songs I had never heard him do live before and very happy to hear 6 from the new CD. The night was magical, Mustard's Retreat were fabulous and the audience loved them, John was outstanding and the audience adored him, the crowd was great, the theater was great, but hasty u-turns in my huge truck literally in the middle of Chicago streets on what looked to me like a not so good side of town was NOT part of the thrill we expected to experience! As my husband and I trailed Bryn and Shirley around and around, we cracked up, not having a clue what they were doing, but since it was their turf, figured they would get us there on time! And they did! Bravo! Bryn and Susan, on the loose in Chicago on a Gorka/Mustard's Retreat night....almost too much to fathom... (nerissa nields is even doing a small solo tour next month, with author pam houston.) full band shows tend to be more rock, while the duo shows are more folk, but i think they're amazing in any form. teresa - ---------- teresa jennifer wong teresa@wongs.com, www.liquidgirl.org "and february was so long that it lasted into march and found us walking a path alone together" -dar williams ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 18:48:44 -0500 From: "cycle12345" Subject: Wooohoooo!!! Hello, gang - in case you couldn't tell, I'm very excited! Earlier today I ordered my ticket for the April 18 John Gorka concert at the "Barns of Wolftrap" in Vienna, Virginia near my brother's home just west of D.C., and I got super seat #112 in row "F" which means that I'll be in the center section on the aisle in the sixth row back from the stage! Now, with only five weeks to go before the concert plays, that's pretty stinkin good, right brother and sister Gorkaholics and Gorkans? Let me answer that question for you: "YES it IS!!!" Wooohoooo!!! When I visited Wolftrap for the first time last fall, I was there to see David Wilcox, barely secured the very last ticket, and published a review to the DW list on how much his concert had impressed me from all the way in the back of the barn. Have you ever shared a seat with a duck, two chickens and a mad cow? It's different, I tell ya . . . This time, I'll be able to tell all you devils about the JG concert from up near the front, and you can expect a whole new perspective (and no horsefeathers), bay-bay . . . Wooohoooo!!! Personally, I wanna be up close when John sings "Hank Senior Moment" and "Let Them In" and "Around the House" and "What Was That" and "Oh, Abraham" and, and . . . well, you get the picture . . . all from his brand-spanking new CD, "The Company You Keep". And I may even have to break with an old rule of mine and yell out requests for those songs as well as "Silence" and "Campaign Trail" and "Flying Red Horse" and two or three dozen more . . . Wooohoooo!!! Hey, you don't think they'd throw me out of the barn for doing that, do you? What would red Pegasus think?! That wouldn't be nice. That would make me angry. To quote Dr. David Banner; "They wouldn't like me when I'm angry." Cue the "green filters", Sammy! Get the large old blanket and the over-sized shoes ready! (I'm kidding, Paula-Bryn, I'm just kiddddding!) But I digress, and that's negative thinking . . . Wooohoooo!!! Positively looking forward to my second live John Gorka concert! Wooohoooo!!! I'm "Over There", bay-bay! Wooohoooo!!! Watch my smoke! Wooohoooo!!! I can't be silent! Wooohoooo!!! Steve! Wooohoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
