Please let us know when you get any more updates on the Dylan tribute. Thanks, Mike - -----Original Message----- From: josanne [mailto:j.h.m.van.vliet01@freeler.nl] Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2001 5:07 PM To: good-noise@smoe.org Subject: Red House Records Update 2/29/01 Hi Gorkaholics, I got an update from Redhouse records (letter from Bob Feldman and that's the Redhouse Records boss) He is also writing about an artists tribute to Bob Dylan. John Gorka is also one of the artists on that record. Regards Jos - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------ Hi everyone, It has been a while so I just wanted to get in touch and let you know what is happening around here at Red House. I feel like I've never been so busy but it feels good! Lots of good music on the horizon! The new John Gorka album "The Company You Keep" just came in. It will be in the stores starting March 13th or you can get it by calling us toll free at 1-800-695-4687. We'll get it right out to you. This is John's eighth album and I feel that it is his best. He had a great time making it right here in the twin cities. The cd is a refreshing mix of arrangements and voices, both expected ones-longtime collaborators Lucy Kaplansky sings with him on five songs, Michael Manring on bass, and Peter Ostroushko on fiddle as well as new faces like Ani DiFranco, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Patty Larkin. The songs run the gamut of emotions-telling stories of how "the Company You Keep" can either lift you up or tear you down, sustain you or be downright hazardous to your health. It is a very uplifting album. I can't tell you how much I enjoy driving around listening to it over and over. John is doing quite an extensive tour starting March 1st in Berkeley, CA. You can check out his concert dates at http://www.flemtam.com. We also have just released a wonderful family/kids cd called "Kids Cars & Campfires". Eric and I dedicated it to our sons (Ari is 7 and Ali is 8) who love so many of the songs we selected to be on the album. This is a compilation of tracks from previous and upcoming Red House albums that are great for car trips, outings and get - -togethers. Tom Paxton, Bill Staines, Greg Brown, the Chenille Sisters, Guy Davis, Suzzy Roche, Sally Rogers & Claudia Schmidt , Spider John Koerner and Dave Moore all contribute songs. It is also in stock now and will be in stores March 13th. I am just finishing an album that I am very proud of and I'll tell you more later. We are producing an artists tribute to Bob Dylan on his sixtieth birthday. "A Nod To Bob" is our way to pay back this native son who really invented all of our jobs here at Red House. It will be out May 8th. Bob's birthday is May 24th. It really turned out great. I'll write more detail about the project in a few weeks. Lucy sang "It Ain't Me Babe " for the cd. Lucy Kaplansky is finishing up her new album. She is recording in NYC with some really wonderful musicians. We are hoping to have it out in August. Norman Blake (Brother Where Art thou) and Peter Ostroushko just finished a wonderful album of traditional music down south at Normans neighborhood studio. I hope to make it available this summer. I'll write soon about the Dylan tribute. Thanks for all the great comments you all email . Thanks for supporting the music. O.K., gang, the rest of you need to call Red House Records at the number (800-695-4687) furnished by Susan and Bryn on their website at http://www.geocities.com/thegypsylife/ and order the newest John Gorka CD, "The Company You Keep" so we can discuss it here on this list before its official release on March 13. How could a true Gorkaphile do otherwise? The total cost is only $19 (15 + 4) including handling and shipping, and I got mine yesterday in just three days flat from when I called in my order. It's going to be almost two more weeks before it goes retail, so how can you stand to wait?! Also, if you'll go to that same site's specific location at http://www.geocities.com/thegypsylife/hank.html and read the lyrics for "Hank Senior Moment" which Susan posted there a few days ago (how are those poor, tired and bruised typing fingers, Susan?), maybe you'll better understand why this, the shortest song on the new CD, is one of my favorites, especially when you hear it . . . How was that, PBBPP? Did I accomplish that without "breaking all the rules"? It was nice to hear what you had to say about John of course, but also, Alice Peacock. She has (in my book) the A # 1 web site of any folkie I know. One of her songs loops through your entire visit to the site. At my Front Page 200 class the teach told me how she does that, pretty cool. Wish we could get permission to do that at the Gorka site. I am sure Susan could find a few free hours to put that into play, (susan in wisconsin) I want to have Alice play myhouse venue and she is a Chicago based singer so it should happen. So, anymore thoughts on the new CD now that you have had it a few days? Thanks for the great review too!
