Am writing to contribute to a coupla threads. First of all, on Gorka songs covered by others - there's 'Faded Blue and Gold' done beautifully by Mustard's Retreat (which they dedicated to our Bryn at their recent Lansing MI concert!!!!). Secondly, I'm just tickled to be able to contribute the above tidbit, not being as much of a Gorkanatic as the rest of y'all. And by that I just mean I'm not quite up to speed on All Things Gorka - not that I don't have the Folk Music Passion! Which leads to the other thread, 'Looking forward to meeting you'. I am a mild-mannered civil servant by day, and an Arkoholic by night. The Ark being the closest folk venue to my home in the middle of the state that's shaped like a mitten. My 'Gorka' is actually Susan Werner, if I had to pick an artist about whom I'm completely passionate. I also have a very soft, warm spot in my heart for a guy named David Roth. But I get to go to Gorka's CD release concert at the Ark on 3/8, and pick up his new disc and continue pursuit of my Degree in Gorkanomics. I LOVE all the activity on Good Noise. It's a blast! You guys put the EdHeads (Eddie from Ohio) and Believers (Susan Werner) and Planet-X-ers (Christine Lavin) to shame!!!! Though I think you need not worry about divulging 'secrets' about gorka behavior. Most of it is pretty typical. Especially the note shaking thing, he's been doing that forever. A very painful thing to watch indeed. Painful for him too, as you can see by the facial contortions. A compulsive thing with him I think. I heard he received treatment for this disorder a while back and stopped doing it. Alas, he must have had a relapse. I feel sorry for him. Sometimes I think he'll never get those little buggers out of his guitar. We're re-enacting the 18th Amendment here in this house for a week or so. I was celebrating our essentially brand new computer. After backing everything we could think of (time-consuming) we completely wiped the hard drive (scarey), and then we installed Windows 98 which will take me awhile to figure out although I can tell I like it better than 95 already. And we are virus free! Yay! (Ouch) Speaking of the virus - I received another email (the third) with the evil attachment last night. This time the attachment says, 'sorry about yesterday.' The first one, which I foolishly opened, said 'to unknown recipients.pif' (although it came from a friend I've since warned), and the second one said 'me_naked.avi.pif'. I'm going to forward it to the Norton Anti-virus people so they can recognize it. Be careful everyone. And now I'm going to retry sending the review in its full form. I sent the parts off last night in the correct order, I'm sure of it. (Well now that I think about it...) They came back to me as 1, 2, 4, 3 also. But it would have been pretty difficult for me to set it up that way, because I went back and forth cutting and pasting - I would have gotten lost trying to mix them up. I suppose I couldv'e just changed the subjects, heh heh. But I didn't, honest. David Tamulevich -- who happens to be John's manager AND one of the nicest guys in the business -- introduced the song by saying that John rarely sings it (I've seen John twice and I don't believe he sang it either time). David then took "ownership" of the song and did a wonderfully heartfelt performance. Suzie also wrote: <> I have to speak up here to make note that the Lansing area has two folk venues at the moment -- the Ten Pound Fiddle Coffeehouse www.tenpoundfiddle.org (which closed our regular season -- our 25th -- with John last year) and Creole Gallery http://lansing.com/creolegallery, the venue for the aforementioned Mustard's Retreat show. While the Fiddle only produces one concert a week between September and May (to coincide with Michigan State University's school year), the Creole does several shows a week -- some jazz, some folk, some poetry. What good news! I have a question (maybe for Chris Thorpe since he's who started this list) - is there a way to get a digest version of this list (ie - all e-mails from one day in one long message??) My husband is slighty freaking over the fact that there were 89 posts in the last 3 days (from this list alone). It's really no wonder I can't keep up. Don't get me wrong...I'm glad for the fact that the Gorka-holics are uniting and building somewhat of a community/friendship. And I'd like to be part of it, but I'm going to have to unsubscribe if there isn't a way to keep the volume of posts down. And while I'm getting a few smiles from the exchange between Steve and Sam N Sara, I really don't appreciate having to sift thru "is this green font" to find any Gorka content. Sorry to sound like such a jerk - that really isn't my intent. It's just a bit overwhelming to sign on in the morning and have 40+ messages to read thru. Perhaps they could be personal e-mails to each other and not sent to the whole list?? BTW, I really did enjoy reading your review Sam & Sara! Sounds like a great time! I also had a dreamy Valentine's Day show with John a few years back. :)) Thanks for breaking it into parts so we could finally read it. Take care everybody! Living in Metuchen! Don't you let it get around... Living in Metuchen! It's exit seventeen... Living in Metuchen! Finest Town I've ever seen... It's a curious thing, and I can't explain... Feels like I'm Living in Metuchen again (Break: one verse, with a severely distorted Telecaster, say...) Some come to breathe the water, some come to drink the air But if you want a paradise, it's south of Montclair The way the girls talk, the way that they drive The way that they walk makes me glad I'm alive It's a curious thing and as a matter of fact Looks like Metuchen and it's great to be back Chorus (Break: one verse, screaming tenor sax, say...) Hoboken has Sinatra, Freehold has Bruce But take me to Metuchen, and turn me loose They've got girls on the rebound, girls overdue They've got big hair and they know how to do It's a curious thing, just a matter of choice We're in Metuchen and it's time to rejoice Chorus More notes from Geoff: "I feel a certain obligation to add a disclaimer here, but I'm not going to give in. "Living In Metuchen seems to be, for me, a kind of analogy for life in the "modern world". It's also a truly fine example of Great Art spawned in the undisciplined mind." Hmmm I'd like to hear the uncleaned-up version.
