I don't know how I feel about the old soul stuff, but I certainly agree about Promnight in Pigtown. Like Sara posted, seeing John in live performance brings new life and meaning to the songs. I heard John perform this song live when I was a Green Gorkahead, new to him and his way with words. I had already started buying the CDs and had gotten hooked by my first live Gorka performance at The Great River Folk Festival (he is appearing there again this year and it is a wonderful intimate folk festival) in August and was itching to see him again. I got my best friend to trust me and go on an autumn trip with me, something we have done often now, we call them our Gorka Journeys. She had never really given John a good listen, preferring to stay with others she liked, especially David Wilcox. She and I went to Jordan, Minnesota and heard John perform in a barn at a Country Fairgrounds in October....complete with Pig Roast. It was a beautiful setting. He played Promnight in honor of our supper. It was sad and funny and one of my most favorite Gorka moments. He also did Winter Cows. He doesn't do those songs much anymore so when they sneak out in live performance these days, they are truly a gift. Promnight hits me as pure Gorka. When someone asks me why I like his music so much, that is one song I might play for them. That one and Raven In The Storm. Both of them show his genius with the English language. IF they don't like either of those songs then I know I can never be friends with them and push them out of my life for good. Well, maybe not quite so harsh, but it lets me know that on some level....they don't get "me." As a PS...my friend Shirley is now as big a Gorkanatic as I am...we are John's biggest fans...with computers. BTW, my partner (otherwise known as my husband LOL) and myself use a subtle little code from one of John's songs--"They're from New Jersey". And one of HIS most important I think. He doesn't get political very often. We all recall Hitler with so much horror, yet don't recognize those same neo-Nazi elements in our own government. With Bush in the White House, it's definitely time to bring this one out again. It might be the the "stark" melody that turns you off at first. We all want to hear pretty songs don't we? The tone he sets, though, is perfect for the subject and I think it's one of his masterpieces. The haunting effect is meant to shock and disturb. To wake people up. To me it almost seems as if he is summoning the ghosts of the holocaust to warn us not to forget. The first time I heard this song, It affected me deeply. I cried. Especially with the line, "They would kill Jesus again." Becsause they would. And they do. Every day. Ironically, under the guise of "Christain morality." O.K. enough. Geoff Bartley is one of John's closest friends and is an amazing guitarist! My personal guitar god. I teach piano and guitar. He is essential listening for my students...and one of the nicest people I've ever met. A true poet, lyrically and musically. I sent you all an email a long time ago when you were discussing compilations which praised Geoff and mentioned songs he and John wrote together. I will list them again. Maybe Paula would like to add them to the website. As for Geoff's own stuff, everything's amazing, but I recommend starting with "Blues Beneath the Surface" and "One Kind Word." You can order directly from Geoff and he will be happy to send you a personally autographed copy. If you do, say Hi for me. His email is Geoffbartley@pobox.com He also teaches guitar and harmonica lessons in case any of you live up that a way and are interested....clip from his email list> (For guitar and harmonica lessons, please call me(him) at (508) 651-9390) Songs Co- written with Gorka: "Raven In the Storm" ... You know this one. "Cut By Wire" ...appears on "One Kind Word" sung by Geoff. Also was recorded by Mary Black on "Speaking With The Angel" (amazing recording) ... This song is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. "Rubber Love" ...is a really fun song. John used to do it only when requested. I'm sure he will do it for you. Next time you see him, just scream out "Rubber Love"! Old friend, Steve Lind (see guest book on Paula's web page) hails this as his favorite song. (He's the one who always used to request it.) It appears on Geoff's "I Am The Heart". Which I think is no longer available. I have it. I can post lyrics if anyone is interested. There are two others: "Waiting For a Sign" and "Living In Metuchen" which have never been recorded and which I've never heard. I found them in a Songbook Geoff put together a while back and sold at Godfrey's. I emailed him to order one for a student a few months ago and he informed me that this is also no longer available. It contains many unrecorded songs. I told Geoff to get his butt in gear and record them. So far no luck. So, I don't know whether John even remembers these songs or how to play them, but you could ask. Maybe they are ones he has forgotten and would like to resurrect. Maybe not. Don't know. According to the liner notes (After Yesterday) "Hero's" was one he'd forgotten also. These are the only songs I'm aware of co-written. O.K. got to get back to work Take care all, Shelley P.S ...Below is a clip from Geoff's web page: http://www.geoffbartley.com (also see : http://www.waterbug.com ) Geoff Bartley has been called "the spiritual godfather of the Cambridge folk scene."There's some irony in the fact that while Geoff can spend nearly an hour simply naming his musical influences, he has himself influenced several generations of today's acoustic legends. (David Wilcox calls him "the juju master of the guitar.") I live in the place where you perceive nothing: look again. I am the arrow point that finds the boar's heart. I am the flicker of red from a blackbird's wing I am the feathers sprouting from your most secret wounds You will teach me of flying; I will stand on your shoulders and leap. And all will come right, I swear it: we will meet where the forest is deepest, Where the night is blank, and there are no stars For I am your annihilation, come to make peace. - - - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Friday, February 23, 2001 2:06 PM Subject: Re: Raven in the Storm > If I remember correctly, 'Raven in the Storm' is the only song where John > Gorka lists a coauthor for the lyrics. Beware all - it's called 'me_naked' and it's a bad one! I steadily lost everything. Wow, is this computer running fast now! I should have done this ages ago! Friendly advice: save save save! Sam, my good friend, I'm glad you mentioned the virus problem. I just heard of two of them yesterday at work, and both are very bad. You just got one of them, and the other one is disguised as one of those "virtual" greetings cards and leads with a message which says something like, "A virtual card for you". Both are said to be able to permanently destroy your hard drive, and they're pretty rough on your computers, too . . . Heh heh . . . You can't keep doing this to me without warning me in your subject line! This is the third time in two days that I've had to carefully towel dry my keyboard. I'll bet you're a formidable chess player too, hey? So, you're a G-man? I was too, for a year. 1-800-TAX-HELP, that was me from 9/90 to 9/91... If anyone has any tax questions, by the way... We will resend Sara's message to you as soon as we press 'send'to this message... Okay, the keyboard's all cleaned up. I'm ready for the next one, buds!
