As a totally committed Gorkaholic, I shall certainly treasure it. Thanks so much! Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2001 18:06:28 -0600 From: "samsara" Subject: Intruder Alert! Yes, it's the Sam guy again! And let me tell you all (since I can speak for myself), Sam is on pins and needles in anticipation of tomorrow night's show! (I was tempted to put 'pins and needles' in all caps.) I'm concerned about Mother Nature and Old Man Winter gathering forces to keep me from going. They're a cute couple I think, don't you? Just the cutest! Mmm-mmm, I just love 'em! Don't you? I think I mentioned in a previous message that I missed the Wilcox show last month in Des Moines due to the weather, and I've been really nervous about John's show coming up tomorrow night. (I was tempted to put 'really' in caps.) We have some snow coming in tomorrow afternoon and then the temperature is predicted to drop below zero before sunset. I'm really adamant against risking lives for extracurricular events, which is why I shredded the Wilcox tickets to prevent myself from changing my mind. I'm against high school sports in winter states also. We've driven through that kind of cold before. We have a cell phone. We have AAA. We have a big, safe car. It won't be icy roads - it's just going to be really cold. So far, it's all systems go. So I have some questions for you experienced show-goers. I know it's short notice to ask if someone could respond before I leave tomorrow at 7 PM, but I really haven't been to a close-up show like this before and I wonder what I can get away with. I promise that I will track the list of songs, in chronological order, and post it to goodnoise in return. Actually, I'll do that for you, no matter what, because I know you get a kick out of that, and the reason you do would be fun to debate in the future. I'm more interested in knowing whether or not John smokes cigarets (or anything else, oops, did I say that? Because I don't! No way! And I think people who do should go to prison for years and years so they can learn to do good things with their lives! Like pick locks, or make silencers!) or if he has a favorite libation (I'm guessing either cheap beer or Glenlivet, heh heh. But I don't drink alcohol! No way! Rich people's foolishness!). That kind of info... and once again I ask myself, why does it matter to me? Here are my questions, oh experienced and wonderful ones: Does John hang around after shows and sign autographs? If he does, what should I ask him to sign? Also, does he accept gifts? (I'm listening to Jos's first compilation and it's distracting. I'll listen to all my JG tonite. Mother Nature be nice to me tomorrow, let your husband sleep really late...) I wrote a simple children's book, 'The Birthday Dream', for my 6 year old niece ten years ago as a requirement for a children's literature class. There are children that know this simple book by heart - they can't read yet but they know every word. I guess I have to say it's Suess-ish but not that much. (I was tempted to put 'that' in caps.) Can I put it in a big envelope and give it to him for his new child? I would love to. If you all think I can get away with that, I need to know the name of his new child (and only? If not only, then both names...?) so I can say, "to from." Is that going too far? Want to hear some? "Wake up, wake up, it's your birthday, wake up!" something whispered in my ear. I opened my eyes, how can this be? There's no one here, who whispered to me? Before I could get out of bed, something buzzed around my head, and landed there! Upon my knee! "I'm a Winklebee," he said. A Winklebee? "Oh yes, oh yes!" he winked his eyes. First the left and then the right. He really was a silly sight! "I have a gift for you," he said. "A birthday dress, blue and red. Put it on and then you'll see, in Happy Birthday Land you'll be!" Okay, that's enough - I'm feeling self-conscious. And conspicuous. Thank you in advance for your help. And thanks to those who kindly responded to my request for his piano version of RIW. I think Iowa Public Radio is going to play it tomorrow at 215 PM. They'd played the first half today of a show he did in Cedar Falls. The one I heard an excerpt from, prompting my first contribution to goodnoise. Tomorrow I might just get a double dose of the amazing John Gorka. Looking forward to your help. Sure, like I've got room to talk... I ramlbed into the group and then stayed quiet for two weeks. So solly. I became strangely busy. Tomorrow nite at this time I'll be one half hour from seeing John in person! I hope this message finds you as it leaves me in the best of health. I guess that has never been my personal focus where Mr. Gorka is concerned. Like we wrote at the web site: What you won't find here are stories about John's personal life. While those of us who consider ourselves Gypsy Lifers have made deep connections to the music, the lyrics and the stories, we remember that we are not his friends, we are his fans. I have heard tales of John as a drinker, old stories told to me by old folkies. I don't know if they were true.....or campfire memories exaggerated. I do not believe he smokes....I have been to many shows and folk festivals and have never seen him with a cigarette. Sam, how wonderful that you are going to get to experience him live! The book for his children would be a wonderful gift. I do take John gifts as well, a sort of thank you for what you bring to my life gift. He will autograph CDs after the show and talk a bit...he is shy. One thing I DO KNOW FOR SURE, John has one of the nicest managers in the business! Real, down to earth, accessible.....there, that ought to be worth a few bonus points huh gang? Have fun tomorrow night Sam! I can't wait to read your review. Sam says: I'm not asking for a key to the front door of John's house. I have more John Gorka albums than any other artist in my collection of albums. John is in my livingroom and, in fact, John is singing in my livingroom as I type this. (I hope he doesn't think I'm ignoring him!) Are you sure that "Mr." Gorka doesn't consider you and me as friends? Were I an an artist that sold my music to make my living, I would be happy to share my day-to-day inclinations. I realize that I don't owe them that information, but, hey, they spent fifteen bucks on my album... I'll tell them what brand of cigarets I smoke! John almost seems to invite us into his livingroom. What's the big deal? I'm not going to hop in the car and drive there. And if I don't smoke cigarets (which I don't - no way - and I think fools that smoke them should be forced to drink alcohol), maybe I could influence their decision to quit. What's it to me? They're not asking for a key to my front door. Psyche says: I have heard tales of John as a drinker, old stories told to me by old folkies. Sam says: That is simply, and well put, the fun info I'm looking for. Now I doubt that John smokes cigarets. He seems so honest with his songs, I think that he would probably smoke on stage. I feel good about this info. You've seen him on stage, I've seen him once, he didn't smoke either time, hello. It's such a simple thing I ask. I love John Lennon also and he publicly smoked Gitanes. It's just fun info. I'm not obsessing. Lennon also loved vodka but gave it up when he became a house-husband. If I knew then what I know now I might have written him a letter for fun and said, hold tight hang tough, friend! (Alcohol's evil, and I think fools that drink it should be forced to smoke cigarets!) Each year this time I hit this mood - wait a minute, I plagiarized a friend - let me get my invisible gun out... I hope I'm not making the group uncomfortable. If I am, I'll unsubscribe. I am truly a fan of JG. While I haven't reached the point of creating a website in his honor, as has been very well done I see, I think that, along with a copy of a childrens book for Noelle and Joseph, I'll give John a key to my front door. Maybe I'll get a different knock some night. Isn't life amazing? Ready for the next, Sam ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2001 01:10:39 -0500 From: "cycle12345" Subject: samsara Well, now, "samsara", I, for one, greatly enjoy your sense of humor and your most obvious appreciation of Mr. Gorka's music and personality. When John was playing at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia a few months ago, he mumbled something about never having done drugs. From a friend of mine who knows John fairly well, I have heard that he went through a "dark" period, but I never heard that it involved drugs or alcohol. It sounded to me more like a time of deciding who he was and what he wanted to do with himself. Most of us have "been there and done that", and a few of us still have the dirty t-shirts to prove it! Please do not unsubscribe from this list, and I'll take an extra copy of that key if you've got one . . . Thanks!
