Hey! Geez...I hope I'm doing this right! Im new here, but really glad to be here. Ive been lurking for a little over a week. But now I have something that I can contributesomething to tell! I saw John last night for the first time in concert. He played the Ice House in Bethlehem, PA, just a stone throw from Moravian Campus where he went to college. The concert was part of the Godfrey Daniels 25th anniversary celebration. Im sure you know that John got his start there. They love him! He is their boy. I wish you could have listened in on some of the conversations that I eavesdropped on during intermission. They were of the We remember John when type. Anywaythe Ice House holds maybe less than 400, I think. My cousin and I got there about = hour early and found seats in the fourth row just left of center. They were good seats, but we got the LAST of the good seats. One couple that came in at about five minutes of eight was ROYALLY PEEVED that they could not get seats together! There were a lot of folks in that position and they even had to bring more chairs in for latecomers. John came out at about 8:10 and wow! He looked great! His hair is getting long! He was dressed in a black suit coatblack jeansgray tee shirtblack shoes with RED shoelaces! BE STILL, MY HEART! I didnt think of keeping a set list until after the first song, so we had a hard time remembering what it was later on. Nowyou seasoned Gorkaholics are going to laugh at some of the titles Ive come up with. I only have two of his CDs, so I have a lot of catching up to do! Ill do my best with the set list. Openingsomething about When She Kisses Me (very upbeatgreat song When it was over, John thanked us all for coming out and said that song was one that he used to trick the new people into thinking that he did happy love songs. There was a lot of knowing laughter from others in the audience! I knew enough about Johns music to laugh, too! Next Im from New Jersey (very funny to those of us who live close enough to New Jersey to get it, but he said that when he does this song across the country that they sometimes dont even clap! The way he said it was so funnyhe is very humorous!) Mean Streak Love Is Our Cross To Bear (God, I love this song!) Let Them In (He accompanied himself on piano on this one. He told the story of how he a nurse had found the poem and kept itI was THRILLED that he did this one and I was the *only one* who clapped when he announced the name of the song!) Oven of Love (the pilot has gone out on our oven of lovesaid that this one was "country"...but not good country...bad country. VERY funnygreat response from the audience! We were practically in tears!) Edgar, the Party Man (This was another funny onebut maybe sad? I wish I had the lyrics. Anywayhe forgot the second verse and had to stop. He went over to the piano and got this really tattered notebook and started paging through for the lyrics. The audience laughed! I thoughtgeezhow much would we pay for THAT battered old notebook? When he finally found the right page, he started again and sang, Edgar, the party VAN.hehehehehe laughed at himself and started AGAIN! It was great!) Where the Bottles Break Springtime in PA (featuring a dead groundhog named LowellSaid he was thrilled to be able to do this song in Carlisle PA on Groundhog day! Hysterical!) BREAK When he came back he said I dont like breaksI walked around my little room back there and waited until you were ready to start again Hehehehehecute. What Was That I Just Said (Prime time to forgive, prime time to forget) I Saw a Stranger With Your Hair (My cousin loved the line, By the way, how is my heart? ) Houses In the Fields (This song meant soooooo much to me. His songs are so relevant to our area. It is so nice that he is a localhe understands. There are houses springing up in our beautiful Pocono Mountains in places that they should not be. There is a field that the deer used to roam in that is now full of mini-mansions. To add insult to injury, the contractors named the development Deerfield Park. SeeJohn understands how this feels. This was my favorite song of the evening. It made me cry.) Night Is a Woman (beautiful) Cypress Tree (In preparation for becoming a dadbeautiful, too.) Like My Watch (Said hes written that one a block away in one of the Moravian dorms.) The Mercy of the Wheels (requested) Love Is Not Enough People My Age (Oh my! What a GREAT song! People my age are starting to look GROSS! Hahaha!) Semper Fi (beautiful) Thats How Legends are Made (said it was for Stan Rogers?) Oh Abraham (Tried to have it done for Abraham Lincolns birthday LAST year, and now its going to be on his new albumAFTER Lincolns birthday THIS year! Oh well!) Good Noise Encores: Part of Your Own (Another tear jerkersang it for his mom, who was in the audiencejust beautiful!) The Water Is Wide (I was thrilled, as Ive been working on this song to sing a Paulas Weekend Underneath this summer) He invited us to sing along! He did this one on the piano. *** I stayed and spoke to him and got his autograph on my two CDs. I FORGOT MY CAMERA!!! Ugh. I mentioned Paulas name and he said, Oh, yesthey have a web page We talked about that a bithe seemed really pleased! He told me to tell you Hi, Paula. The last thing I said to him was, Hey, can you tell me how to get back to Route 22 from here? He didnt miss a beathe said, Sureyou go to the stop signtake a right Hehehehewhat a great guy! Sooff to 22 East and back to Stroudsburg, and thats how legends are made, right? It was such a great night. Im feeling the afterglow right now and it feels good! Im sorry to have made my first post sooooo long, but I just had too much to say! Im sure you all understand when I say it could have been at least five times longer! Ciao! I'm thinking it's because I wrote it in Microsoft Word and just cut and pasted it into an email. Hope it wasn't too hard to read. If it was, let me know and I'll re-post a better copy. Denise (Who worked so hard on that post, only to see it all messed up!) :-( ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Feb 2001 13:49:00 -0500 From: Kris / Scott Pancoast Subject: John @ The Icehouse 2/3/01 Hey folks ~ Sorry I've been so quiet on this list lately...time's just flying by quicker than I'd care to acknowledge (I can't believe 2000 has come and gone!!). Anyhow, I had the pleasure of seeing John's concert last night at The Icehouse in Bethlehem PA and had to share some thoughts on the night with you. I have had the fortune of seeing John many times, perhaps @ 20 shows (maybe more). Last night was HANDS DOWN, the most emotional performance I've ever seen. Absolutely beautiful. The reason for this was John's mother and a few other family members were in attendance. I'll give the full set list in a moment, but would like to mention a couple of tender moments. During the 1st half of the show, someone shouted out a request for Semper Fi, which John got around to after intermission. Emotions must've been running high, because as he got to the 2nd verse, he had to stop singing, visibly choked up and just played the guitar until he could compose himself enough to sing again. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. Of course his first encore was "Part Of Your Own" which brought out the hankies again. I've seen him do both of those songs several times, but never like last night. One of the light-hearted moments of the night came when he had a shout-out request for "Edgar the Party Man" which John humbly obliged. He sang the first few lines, then just stopped, not able to recall the lyrics. (D'OH!) Pulled out his lyric folder (complete with large printing ) and tried to start over. Only this time he got a bit tongue-tied on the first few words, which brought about howls of laughter, with John laughing the loudest. Third time is the charm as he nailed it. Anyhow, here's the complete set list: When She Kisses Me I'm From New Jersey Mean Streak Love Is Our Cross To Bear (the song I heard and "got it" 10+ years ago) Let Them In (John on piano) Pilot Light Is Out (John's mom's favorite :) Edgar The Party Man (instant request) Where The Bottles Break (instant request) Springtime In PA (about Lowell the groundhog) What Was That I Just Said I Saw A Stranger Houses In The Field (on piano) Night Is A Woman (on piano) Cypress Trees Like My Watch Mercy Of The Wheels Blue Chalk (instant request) People My Age Semper Fi (delayed request) That's How Legends Are Made Oh Abraham Good Noise (delayed request) (also 1st & 2nd verses switched) First Encore: Part Of Your Own Second Encore: Water Is Wide (on piano) First, can I say how fortunate we are to have an artist that is secure enough in his repertoire to honor instant requests? That's not something I see alot of these days. One of these days I'll get up the nerve to shout out "Campaign Trail" I love that song and have never heard it live. Doubt that he'd do that one tho. Last nights show was the kick-off to Godfrey Daniels 25th anniversary celebrations. Godfrey's is the coffee house where John got his start and it's always a special treat to see John play there. The Icehouse is a secondary venue that holds more folks (as opposed to the 100 seat Godfreys). But Godfreys brought over the quilt that hangs behind the stage there ususally. Someone took the time to hand stitch the notes to "That's How Legends Are Made" into that. It's beautiful. My friend had her digital camera with her and got some really nice shots - both of John and the quilt. Let me know if anyone would like to see them. Thank you John for taking a few moments to stop and talk with me, for signing my stub and taking a photo with me. And thank you for giving me one of the best shows I've ever seen from you. Now, if you want to be surprised about the new cd, don't read any further: John said his song "What was that I just said" & "Oh Abraham" would be on the new cd. Also "People My Age" (YEAH!!!) is on there - possibly as a hidden track. But he joked you've got 40 seconds after the last song to hit stop before that comes on. Take care everybody! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Feb 2001 13:55:34 -0500 From: Kris / Scott Pancoast Subject: Re: Sorry 'bout that! Hi Denise!! Nice review!! The subject of the message was "hooked". "Okay, ya got me! I bought a John Gorka CD (land of the bottom line) and you're absolutely right, everything you ever said! Reminds me of a young Gordon Lightfoot. I love Stranger in My Driver's Seat; it plays to my recurrent dreams of the T-bird being stolen. Now in continuous play mode until I learn them all. If your info network tells you he's coming to Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Daytona or Gainesville please let me know asap." That was from 11/4/00 - She then followed up with a phone call on Thanksgiving thanking me profusely for mentioning his name OVER & OVER thru the years finally prompting her to buy that cd! She had fallen in love with his music even more and also had roped in her husband's Granny as a fan. :) She asked which cd should be her next purchase...of course I said "all of them" as I have a real hard time picking any one over the rest. feeling better finally getting those thoughts out of my head as I've been meaning to write them for a while... And Susan, I do still plan on sending over a review of the Phila. Folk Festival performances & photo as soon as I put them together. I've been a lurker for quite some time. I'll be seeing John in Des Moines, Iowa (60 miles from my place), on Feb 16 and I'm really looking forward to it. It will be the second time I'll have seen him. The first time was at Estes Park, Colorado, in 1992 (I think...). I was with a great group of friends who told me that I just HAD to see him. They knew I liked Nanci Griffith and David Wilcox. Nanci was playing there also, which is why I went. In between her songs I yelled, "Marry me, Nanci!" and all these strange women in leather looked at me angrily and hissed at me, and Nanci looked at me, smiling, and said, "How much money do you have?" It was great! And then John came on and he was fantastic! I have most of his albums now, including the first Jos compilation. After the show was over we walked by the teeshirt and munchie tents and my friend Kelly, who was fairly loaded on wine, said, "Look! There's John! I HAVE to get his autograph!" And sure enough, John was just walking throught the crowd like anyone else. I suggested to Kelly that she shouldn't bother him, but she was insistent, and stormed up to him. "I love you, I love you!" Fawning stuff he must see all the time. But he was gracious and he told her to turn around. He had a magic marker and he wrote 'Nice to see your back, John Gorka' on the back of her teeshirt. I got to shake his hand, too. I decided to write this email because of the song 'The Water is Wide'. You all seem to know each other so well, I feel like I'm crashing a private party, which I would never do. I know that it's on the Pete Seeger compilation, but it's not the version I would love to have. I'd like to get ahold of the piano version that I heard on PRI a couple of months ago. It was stunning. The piano version has more impact than the guitar version for me. Is there some way to add that to my collection? How I wish I was home when I was listening to PRI that day, but I was driving into the Hy-Vee parking lot at the time. If I'd have been home I would have been recording it, dang gone it. You all are a nice group of people and I've enjoyed reading your messages. I hope you don't think I'm intruding. I can't wait to see John - less than two weeks now. I had tickets to Wilcox, also in Des Moines, January 26th, but Mother Nature decided to flex her muscles that night, and I turned the car around four miles out. Then I paced the floor knowing that I could still make it because he was the second show and finally put my tickets through the shredder to insure I wouldn't risk any lives trying to drive through the blizzard conditions. Oh well, next time. Thanks for listening - I thank you for any assistance in advance. ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V4 #17 *******************************
