I really love that song too. Also, another person on this list speculated that when JG writes/sings about himself or those very close to him, he uses much more symbolism and oblique references than when he's writing about others. Also, from my observations, I think that's probably correct . . . Also, it's time to quit writing "also". I'm uncomfortable taking the part of someone who 'knows' what an artist is trying to say. The questions leave a lot of room for mulling over a song- so it takes me more time to enjoy it. John Gorka is my favorite poet/singer/songwriter of all time, and I consider "Silence" to be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, but its meaning haunted me and challenged me until I was able to receive an interpretation, and now it's more beautiful than ever . . . Thanks! I don't want an interpretation unless it comes from JG. And if he would rather not talk about the meanings of his songs, that's fine. I'd rather live with questions than hold to an interpretation that is not what he meant at all. I guess I'm uneasy with interpretations because they are often more about the speaker than the 'spoken about'. BTW, any news on the new CD? I'd read it was due to be released in early 2001 (I hope, I hope, I hope). Yes, at his performance at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia a couple of weeks ago, John mentioned that his new CD should be ready sometime soon after the first of the year. Isn't that great news?!
