By way of intro, I am a music student who prefers bass and who was familiar only with Gorka's "Blue Chalk" via songbird Maura O'Connell. Picked up "Land of the Bottom Line" for a buck at a garage sale last week and it has barely left my CD player. Incredible lyrics coupled with gorgeous melodic lines. Be curious if anyone onlist would care to discuss the bass lines? I notice Gorka used such players as Kevin Jenkins and Vic Colluci (mostly), but I do not know their work. Not surprised to see Shawn Colvin and Nanci Griffith are boosters. My musical taste in open....tho I do not purchase many rap or Lawrence Welk discs. I also think he does a beautiful job on "The Water is Wide", let alone the awesomeness of his own music! That is the kind of experience you get at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA. It truly is a magical experience. He also plays occasionally at a music festival in Bethlehem, PA called Musikfest. The combination of his voice and the acoustics in the hall he plays in is so incredible, it is a must see concert for all Gorka fans. I never seem to get into the other ones. As a bass player - and not to diss those you mentioned - I would say you have to talk about Michael Manring in regards to Gorka melodic bass lines. There are times he literally *makes* the song! Will see what other's post, do some review, and jump in again. Thanks for the thought. ~Martin Wayne Renardson wrote: Be curious if anyone onlist would care to discuss the bass lines? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 15:01:59 -0500 From: Wayne Renardson Subject: Re: Intro/Gorka's Bass Players One fine day Martin H said: MH> A great thread (for me at least). Hi Martin...I have only the one album and did not know Manring played on any of Gorka's other albums. Manring is well known both as a player and writer....he once had a column in Bass Player mag. I know less than nothing about the players on "...Bottom Line" but they are solid. I have been inventing (trying to anyway :) my own lines. MH>There are times he literally *makes* the song! Of that I have no doubt. But then, a first-rate player like Manring is bound to add a flavor otherwise absent from the stew. Maybe you can tell me what album(s) he is on? Hope all is well in Alaska. My former wife teaches literature at the college in Valdez. Was there a few years ago and one awesome sight. Valdez, that is. My former wife, while looking great, is not quite as breathtaking as Prince William Sound :) Wayne Renardson Nashville, TN ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 20:26:49 -0400 From: "Steve McGraw" Subject: Re: The john Gorka Music Page Great job, Paula and co.; I'l be back! I have been inventing (trying to anyway :) my own lines. Tell me more. Would love to share thoughts and riffs. I do the same. Love playing to John's songs. So as not to bore the rest of the noisers, you may email me, if you like. And, you may want to check out Greg Steele's chord charts via: http://www.geocities.com/thegypsylife/goodnoise.html. Nice job Greg. > > Of that I have no doubt. But then, a first-rate player like Manring > is bound to add a flavor otherwise absent from the stew. Maybe you > can tell me what album(s) he is on? Michael appears on (at least) Jacks Crows, Out of the Valley, Between 5 and 7, and After Yesterday...all simply orgasmic discs! A few picks, where Michael *makes* the song (accepts the wrath of all you good-noisers.....of course I love John, and of course he is at the center of it all...) are "Night Is A Woman" from Jack's Crows; "That's Why" and "Furniture" (plays a 10-string.....a 10-STRING!!) from Out of the Valley; "Thorny Patch" from After Yesterday; and "Mortal Groove" from Between 5&7. > Hope all is well in Alaska. My former wife, while looking great, is not quite as > breathtaking as Prince William Sound :) All is great in Ak, and while not knowing your former wife, this avid kayaker knows the beauty of PWS. Perhaps only his love of the *bass* is deeper, which is why he must be forgiven by good-noisers, and thanks John (and Michael) daily for his music. ~Martin > BTW ~ To Bryn and Susan: What a great job on the site.
