I hosted another house concert this weekend. This guy sort of found me, had a gig in Milwaukee canceled and knew I was interested, so it all came together in a very short time. I liked that it happened that way. I am starting to believe that if I just relax, the music will come to me....a sort of field of dreams...if I build it, they will come. This guy...David Roth, I knew of but had never heard. A friend loaned me a bunch of CDs and I was quite taken with his gentle voice and inspirational songs. Let me tell you though, nothing quite prepared me for what an amazing performer he is. David Roth sort of just grabs you and pulls you on board for the incredible ride that is his live performance. Different from a Gorka show. John, for me, is about filling the room with his voice and his story. His style is to lay back and let the music talk to us in a way he is not able to with the spoken word. David Roth took my living room and turned it into the most amazing music venue I have ever been in. He pulled each one of us in with his songs, his humor, his laughter. He took us for a ride on a house boat. Before I started this house concert thing, I had an idea of what I wanted, how I imagined they might be. Saturday night surpassed my fantasy. From using the map on the wall to explain where songs and stories happened to turning down all the lights in the house and singing at the piano by candle light, he blew me away. Even his high school music teacher was in attendance and shared the stage with him as did a friend who is a local folk singing gal. An amazing night of kindred spirits getting lost in the music for over two hours. I got to share the experience with family friends and strangers who found out about my house venue via the internet. I wish I could do it every night...wish I could figure out a way to make a paying gig out of it for me. Any big money investors out there want to invest in a house concert venue and let me be the manager-booking agent-muffin baker? If you do not know David Roth's music, check it out and if you do, please go see him in live performance, you will not be disappointed. For that matter, check to see if you have any house venues in your area and support them...support us! It is a most wonderful music experience. I think I'll pull out my copy of On A Winter's Night and re-listen :) Bryn - your house concert sounds wonderful. I wish we lived closer - I would love to check out something like that - such an intimate setting! I also noticed how quiet this list has been...guess everybody's busy. But I've been meaning to write...I wanted to make a tape offer. If anybody would like to send me a blank cassette, I'd be happy to make you a copy of Otto Bost's radio program when he aired the snippet of John's live show from Godfrey Daniels 6/4/00. It includes: I'm from New Jersey, Baby Blues, Branching Out, I Saw a Stranger & Heart Upon Demand. I can also throw on the couple live radio performances I've taped (not the best quality, but nice to hear nonetheless). If interested, e-mail for where to send the blank cassette. Looking forward to the Philly Folk Festival next month...can't wait to have John back there this year. I think the last time was 1994! Have a good one! As "Bryn-Paula-Psyche" knows so well, people on these lists are quite astute in recognizing great singers and their recordings, even from many years ago, and that is what makes all this so very interesting. The newly refurbished acoustics were so good that Lucy Kaplansky first apologized because she had a bit of laryngitis, then stopped in the middle of the first song to say that with a sound system like that she would sound better than ever. Each performer did an hour set. John came out and sang harmony for five of Lucy's songs, and she did the same for him. Patty Larkin sang mostly by herself because a) it is impossible to harmonize with her and b) she obviously doesn't need it or want it. John's set was the best. I hadn't seen him live in eighteen months, and he is a much more polished performer, quite at ease with the large audience (more than 1000), and with a booming voice. His two piano pieces were also wonderful. It was a great evening. Brian Altano ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V3 #56 *******************************
