A four hour drive from where I am near Chicago. Stayed with a friend who had never heard John. She and a couple more of her buddies, who also were Gorka-clueless and I went to the show at the Ten Pound Fiddle on the MSU campus. The venue, called the Kiva was round, sixties decor room decked out in student chair/desks. Most comfortable seating for a folkie show that I have had in a long while. No air conditioning and the first hot night of the spring and all the flowering trees outside the open windows.... Can you sing "Allergies?" John started out in pretty good voice but it was clear by the end of the first set that we was feeling the effects of the season. The second set was difficult. Of course, Gorka in poor voice still outshines most singers in perfect voice. My friend Suzie did take down a set list but I don't have it here. He opened with Like My Watch and his encore was The Water Is Wide. He did the usuals plus the only two new ones of the night, Oh Abraham and People My Age. I enjoyed watching the new folks I brought along as they experienced their "virgin" Gorka concert. The biggest smiles of the night were with The Body Parts Medley and People My Age. Also, a high note, I got to meet fellow Good Noise lister Patrick. He volunteers for the TPF and a special thanks to him for his hard work putting together this show. So, the tone of this post might tell you that I was disappointed a bit. I wanted my fellow concert goers to fall for his music the way I had but I think the difficulty with voice played havoc with that as well. They appreciated his writing. The loved the venue but didn't think they would head down to the Ark tonight for a repeat. Gorkanatic that I am.....I would of....even if his voice was a whisper. Better luck next time. After being off the Wilcox list for a year and not having offered any comments on this Gorka list for a number of months, I've decided to get back into circulation for a while and see how things are going. Also a severe Gorkaholic, I was reading your review of his Lansing gig and was again struck by the fact that I have yet to see him live! I've attended four or five Wilcox concerts but have never seen "my main man John", so I intend to correct that deficiency very soon. His current schedule indicates that he won't be in Virginia until November, so it looks like I'll be doing some traveling soon in order to correct this obvious deficiency. Oh, well, just another good reason for a long, needed motorcycle trip . . . Thanks for invoking good memories and inspiring me to "participate" again!
