If I have a chance to talk to him, I may mention the discussion thats been going on the list about a compilation of his cover songs.....I agree with whoever said they thought John & his growing family should reap the rewards from such a CD...I would LOVE to have it.....have been listening this am to JG sing "Let Them In". David Wilcox does a good job but JG gives me goosebumps when he sings it...hope he does it tonight...along with many others!!! I'm taking a newbie with me tonight....hope he doesnt say anything negative...I'd hate to have to dump him Mary ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 09:35:46 -0600 From: "Eley, Bill W" Subject: Lost World and CD lists The topic of capturing music off the internet was also discussed between Ellis Paul fans. An entire concert of his is available at http://www.kennedy-center.org/millennium/highlights.html. I asked Ellis in an email how he felt about fans capturing his music and exchanging it among themselves. His response was something to the effect that if there was no profit involved, and was just to spread the music, he didn't have a problem with it, but to please be discreet. But, as David pointed out, these guys are under contract, and what they think, and what their record companies think are often not the same (as any true Gorka fan surely knows!). I think we'd best avoid that "Thorny Patch". Just got the "Lost World" CD from Jay Ansill. It's really beautiful, and the JG songs are stunning. I highly recommend it. Technically, even doing it for yourself is illeagle. Doing it for others- even at no cost is even more illeagle, if that is possible. And the Internet, being what it is these days, word gets out. Of course people do it all the time, especially one to one, and it's a great idea. But I must officially say don't do it....David ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Nov 1999 12:52:30 PST From: "Mike Smith" Subject: The List - The End *between5and7@hotmail.com writes: That's 14 songs. More than I thought there would be when I started. Is that the end or is there a 15th out there somewhere? *There are several more. Check out the "music" section of Annie Nugent's website... Cheers, Otto Thanks for the lead to Annie's website. I think this is where the trail of the search for "The List" ends. She has a very extensive list of John's contributions to the world of music. The hypothetical "List CD" has become a double CD collection I think. Oh, well, I'd just like to thank everyone who helped along the way, it was fun for me to hear about the "other" songs by John Gorka that I had no idea existed. Mike P.S. I think the last one is also live, the 2nd one I don't know. KGSR also has a live version of Temporary Road on, I believe, their first Broadcasts compilation KBCO, on their Best of Studio C has a live version of Baby Blues Cornstock Vol 1 has a version of Flying Red Horse..don't know if it is live or not, but I think so Sister Ruby Records out of Atlanta did A Tribute To Bob Dylan several years ago..John sang Love Minus Zero/No Limit I am only aware of a couple of John's songs that he has never recorded that are out there by others. Jamie Brockett did Wings of the Harleys Mustard's Retreat did The Faded Blue & Gold ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 22:26:14 +0100 From: "Jos van Vliet" Subject: Re: Once more, the List Hi Mike Please don't forget "The Gypsy life" recorded in VPRO radio studio in Holland (compilation CD:"Sunday Morning sessions" Munich records, Mrcd 176) regards Jos van Vliet - -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: Mike Smith Aan: good-noise@smoe.org Datum: donderdag 4 november 1999 22:33 Onderwerp: Once more, the List >Thanks Bryn, > >One more time, here they are: > >Christmas Bells - Winter Solstice III >Sweet Love - Kate Wolf: Treasures Left Behind >24 Green Street - P.P.& M. All the songs were re-mixed by the incomparable producer/mixer/engineer, Jim Scott. Anyone not familiar with his work can get a sample of his resume at this link. (Hint: He's not Paul Winter's guitarist) http://allmusic.com/cg/x.dll?UID=9:09:52|PM&p=amg&sql=B123260 He's known for a real clean, crisp sound, and I really like the way he made John's guitar and Jonell Mosser's (testifyin') vocal stand out in the these versions of Mystery to Me and Good Noise. Not to take anything away from the fine job that Bob Dawson and John Jennings did mixing "Out of the Valley", it's just cool getting to hear these slightly different versions. For those who haven't seen this before, the cover is a color version of the photo that is opposite "Flying Red Horse" in the "Out of the Valley" liner notes. He's tilting the chair as he sits gripping his red tinted sunglasses. In the upper right is a not so subtle rip-off of a logo that says "Motor Folkin' " instead of "Hot Wheels". The disc itself is screened as the infamous Hot Wheels Redline Mag wheel, with the letters on the tire reading "John Gorka" on the top and "Motor Folkin' " on the bottom. The catalog # HD94-33 is on the tire also. It's a nice little collectors piece, snatch it up if you ever come across it. How can one man, with one guitar, be so good?! The show last night in Madison, WI, gave me a greater appreciation of his talent, which I didn't think was possible. I've always thought that he was one of the precious few (in my mind) musicians who are truly blessed with a gift and being at the show confirmed that belief. What did surprize me last night was just how funny he is. I know that much of what he did during the show is part of the "act" that he has honed over the years, but it came across very fresh and very funny. He had the crowd laughing quite a bit throughout the show. I guess the most memorable song for me was one of my favorites, Houses in the Fields, played on piano. I swear I could feel the crowds collective psyche be grabbed and taken to that dark, sad, powerless place. The only disapointing thing was that it had to end too soon. John was only slated for 1 hour of the twin-billed show. I could have easily stood for 2 hours, or 3, or ...
