Oh? The show in Chicago last night was wonderful. The opening act is another story. I am usually one to support those who must go first....but this duo....well, with lyrics like "Suffering from an emotional bedsore" what more is there to say? In spite of the opening act, John did two sets himself. He was really on and connecting with the audience. (uncharacteristic eye contact which was pretty cool) I got to meet a cyber friend and he had said before the show that he would love to hear John perform Silence live. Well, from Steve's lips to John's ears. He opened the show with that one. Incredible. It was evident that many in the audience were long time Gorka fans. I didn't keep a set list. Some of the highlights for me were Gypsy Live (still my favorite Gorka song done in live performance) Edgar, complete with theatric facial expressions...Body Parts Medley and People My Age, two of the inimitable Mr. Gorka's finest in my not so humble opinion....Down In The Mill Town on piano...but most of all, it was his rendition of Semper Fi. About two phrases in to the song he just stopped and was suddenly very serious. We thought he had forgotten the lines, but no, he told us he had just been swept away with his own words. He began again and it was simply perfection. A song like Semper Fi is what I love most about any good song writer, but John in particular. It is an intensely personal story and for me, the good writers take the risk to tell us these secrets. It felt like I was hearing a friend's life story instead of sitting in a smoky bar venue with severe lighting problems. It was one of those Gorka moments that gets stored in the memory banks. He sang a new song....and as is the case with my middle aged memory all I remember is a line that repeated, "Prime Time." Anyone? He did ST Caffeine and true to form every time I have heard him perform it, he forgot the lines. I love that, it must be the caffeine. But that is where the subject heading comes from. John told the story of how father hood had turned him into a coffee junkie and that it was really the only legal or illegal drug he abuses. then he paused and smiled and said that he in fact had done fewer drugs that most presidential candidates...so that he probably wouldn't be good presidential material. Imagine Gorka for President.......talk about a land of the bottom line. Adios for now. Bryn, who has that after show high mixed with the melancholia of not knowing when I get so hear him again. ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V2 #125 ********************************
