I've been listening to his music for so long and to finally see him "live", I'm really looking forward to it. Oh Mike. I feel your excitement and anticipation. I too am going to see John this weekend, at The Abbey Pub in Chicago. It isn't my first time though, I am a seasoned veteran of the Gorka performance. This will be my tenth time and I am as excited as I was the first. I have seen him at community centers, in a church, in a warehouse type bar/resurant, at a folk festival, at a small intimate bar, in a barn, at fancy theaters and in a park along a river. Each time the performance has held it's own magic. I will look forward to your sharing the experience here with us. I will do the same. Anyone on the list going to be at the Sunday show? My husband and I are scared to death! But we are very excited about the concert and about being in the same room with John. Now how do we avoid coming across like crazy fans? Hello, I'm a new member to this list, so forgive me if I ask lame-o questions..... Does anyone know if the the Man himself will be playing any dates in Texas in the future? The last time I checked for concert dates (a year or so ago) I missed him by 3 days and he was scheduled again from what I saw. I would love to see him and I'm afraid I'll have to fork out the big bucks and head in a northerly direction to go do it. Small World! A co-worker brought in the Entertainment section of his local paper, The Janesville Gazette, and lo and behold, taking up the entire front was a picture of John Gorka, with the headline All Is Not Quiet and underneath read, "No one dances when John Gorka sings. No one shrieks or screams or faints. But don't let that calmness fool you. There'll be plenty of reaction when Gorka and Greg Brown team up in Madison this weekend." Inside it had a telephone interview (too long to type it right now, although if anyone is interested, I could). I'm jealous you get to go backstage, I wouldn't mind John signing one of my CD booklets or something. Oh, well, I suppose I shouldn't get everything I want the first time out to see him. Sorry Gary! I actual thought it was only going to be JG until I ordered tickets last week and they said Greg Brown was also appearing. To be honest, I hadn't heard any of Brown's music at that time (I quickly went to the library and checked out Slant 6 Mind and Further In) and was informed by the ticket salesperson that most everyone else she had talked to were coming for Brown and didn't know Gorka. I feel sorry for all those unsuspecting people in the audience who are going to get a taste of JG's music and become hopelessly addicted! >From: "Gary Bouchard" >Reply-To: good-noise@smoe.org >To: >Subject: Re: I hope he has a good night in my town... >Date: Fri, 22 Oct 1999 13:03:52 -0400 >Ouch..... > >Aw, heck, Mike.... Mike - Don't give up hope. I've been to a number of John's concerts across the US, and I'd say that about 50% of the time (even at large venues) he comes out to talk to folks after the show, so you might get to meet the man himself. (I might add he's always been quite gracious, too, about signing all sorts of stuff...) After you thank him and tell him what a big fan you are and all that, ask him seriously why he has had such a long moratorium on is songs of crime and punishment? They are some of his best in my opinion. I mentioned before that I have seen John nine times and he has yet to play one. I did get to hear Up Until Then done acapella last year and that was outstanding! When the title of one gets shouted out, say Jailbirds In The Bighouse or Grand Larceny, Vinnie Charles, etc., he has mentioned that he has a moratorium on those tunes. I hope you and your husband have a great time. Relax and be yourself. You might want to tell him that the people on this GOOD NOISE list are his biggest fans..... bigget fans with computers that is. It's been interesting reading all the posts. Does anyone know if John himself reads this list? I was told by the people putting on the Madison event that Greg Brown is the bigger draw and John Gorka is the opening act! Won't people be pleasantly surprised! I am taking 4 people who have never heard either and hoping to convert some fans. The Madison paper had a little article and interview with John where he indicated they might sing some songs together. Apparently Greg Brown started Red House but you all probably know that. I am a newbie here. Originally there was supposed to be a "meet and greet" kind of thing whereby only the people who bought the most expensive tickets could go. So I dutifully bought those only to be told they decided against that and decided only the "important" people (plus 10 of their chosen friends) to the Wisconsin Wetlands Assn. could go to an after concert wine and cheese reception. I whined and pleaded with one of my co-workers who is on the board of WWA and he said he'd let me come as one of his invited guests. He said OK. Then I heard it was by invitation only and he said he would "try." So I really started getting whiney! Lo and behold I got an invitation in the mail and was dancing on air! Of course, now I have a reputation of being a brat! But we get to go at least! They told me he tends to be really shy at these things and since I am outgoing, they hope I can get him out of his corner! Not me...I'll be quivering in a corner too! But one of you (I think it was Bryn) told me he likes to talk about his son. I have only seen him perform once before (about 2 years ago also in Madison) but have been a fan for about 6 years so this is really exciting for me. When we saw him perform before, it was unusual. I would say he talked more than played! But he was utterly charming and very amusing and it was the best concert I have ever been to. Since I am new here, and I am sure all this has been mentioned before, can someone give me a list of CD's that has John's music on them other than his own CD's? has anyone made a list like this? Thanks for listening! Susan Finn ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V2 #122 ********************************
