In february 1992 he was giving a concert for the first time in Amsterdam (Hol- land).A great concert. Right before the birth of my twins the 'out of the valley' CD was released and the songs from this album could be heard on the national radio in Holland for weeks; VPRO radio DJ Jan Donkers was one of his fans.In September 1994 John Gorka was going to give a concert in Holland again and I draw Jan Donkers attention to this and asked him if it would be possible to arrange a radio performance. Shortly after I recieved an invitation to be part of a small selected studio audience. John was playing for more than one hour and before the concert the audience (12 people) had a drink together with him outside on that sunny autumn day. After this concert I made some photographs of John Gorka (you can see them on Annie's John Gorka pages on Geocities) and we chatted about David Wilcox. The live concert, which was broadcasted later that week is cherished by me on a mini-disc and the song 'Gypsy life' from this concert can be heard on the compilation CD 'Sunday Morning Coming Down' (Munich records,MRCD 176, 1995) The day before he performed in the VPRO studio,I happened to see John during the extas of the Shawn Colvin concert in Amsterdam and the day after I was amongst the audience during his one and only concert in Utrecht. To be short, this was THE John Gorka week in my life so far. Is there somebody in the USA who has a good quality live performance on CD-Rom (or Mini disc) of John Gorka? I would like to exchange it for a one hour performance John Gorka made in September 1994 for Dutch radio. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 08:37:22 -0400 From: Greg Steele Subject: Lucy Kaplansky Concert I'm sending this to several lists I'm on of related performers, so please no flames, I just thought you might appreciate the announcement. Just a reminder to all in NC and SC, that Lucy will be performing August 13th in Lincolnton, NC, between Charlotte and Hickory, at the Lincoln Cultural Center at 8:00 PM. This is an intimate venue, seating less than 300, and a great opportunity to see her before she starts touring the bigger venues (as I'm sure she will). This concert is the second in a series I am sponsoring (Cliff Eberhardt was the first) and I am hoping to make this a regular part of our season. Please come and enjoy this great performer in a beautiful setting. I am continually amazed and not only the far reaching arms of the Internet, but at the power of good music to connect people. Your "Gorka Week" is something I am sure all of us are envious of. I wonder if John plans any further travel across the ocean. You mention that you spoke to John about David Wilcox. There is a similar email list for follows of his music. Email me privately and I will pass on the information to you if you are interested. Your photographs are wonderful. Thank you for sharing them. And thank you for sharing your story with the list.
