Good Noise 22. encore: (on piano) The Water is Wide 23. encore: After Yesterday After suffering record-breaking heat to usher in midsummer, the mid-Atlantic has been blessed with delightfully cool temperatures, crystal clear skies and sweater evenings. It was such an evening that greeted John Gorka at Concerts Under the Stars in King of Prussia, Pa., what John himself called “a perfect summer night.” He delivered his songs beautifully. The sound was perfect. And the crowd — overflowing, if not as responsive as some. John said toward the end of his set that he sold out of CDs, and staff members were overheard to say that the satellite parking area was filled and folks were being parked along Henderson Road leading away from the Upper Merion Township building. The audience did bring him back for two encores, so the majority of us were listening intently and appreciatively. John played his Loudon guitar and he performed several songs I hadn’t heard live in a while, notably, “That’s Why,” and “Always Going Home,” a personal favorite. It was the first time I’d heard his wry, “People My Age,” his ode to wrinkles and the effects of gravity. And he filled a lot of requests, including “Winter Cows” and “My Invisible Gun.” We got to meet Kris Pancoast, a fellow fan off the Good Noise list, and compared notes about various concerts and upcoming festivals and musicians we follow around, as Christine Havrilla opened the show with some interesting songs and guitar playing. What a way to spend a summer evening. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 07:37:16 -0700 From: "Mary Sansone" Subject: Re: JG @ CUTS, King of Prussia, Pa., 7/11/99 Jay, thanks for sharing ....sure wish I could have been there. Sheligo" Subject: King of Prussia Concerts Under the Stars Jay & Kris, I'm sorry I missed you guys! I got to the concert site about 7:15 p.m., and was overwhelmed by the sea of people! I was coming from NYC and on time for 7:00 when an accident on the NJTP ate up 20 minutes of time, getting me there just late enough to miss the rondeveau. The show was great, kind of a "retro" for me, because John sang songs I haven't heard in the past 4 or 5 years ("Winter Cows" and "Always Going Home.") There are songs from the latest CD I have yet to hear him play: "Amber Lee" and "Silvertown." Has anyone heard these live? As for the "State of the Arts" program, it was a rerun; the date said 1995, but it looked older than that to me. John sings one song, "I'm From NJ" and has about a 2 minute interview that is sort of weird. I had hoped this would be a new show; oh well. John is going to be performing in West Chester, PA at the beginning of August. If anyone wants, I will get what info is available and start a new thread. Till next time Beth ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 15:51:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Mary Larson Subject: Re: King of Prussia Concerts Under the Stars Beth - Actually, he did both of these when he was in Carson City last Fall, but he didn't do either one of them when he was there June 25. The more I think about it, it's kind of odd that he didn't at least do Silvertown, since he said he wrote that after visiting Carson City for the first time. But then again, this time he was performing with Lucy Kaplansky, so he did a shorter set (although it was worth it just to see the two of them in combination!!). Anyway, to answer your question, I have heard both of those live. CHeers - Mary in Reno On Mon, 12 Jul 1999, Beth C. Sheligo wrote: "Always Going Home.") Couldn't agree more Jay!!!! It was great to meet you, especially after finding out how many of the same shows we've been at! It was nice meeting Nancy too! Can't wait til we can meet up again! Hopefully your daughter next time too! Beth, Sorry to hear about the traffic problems! I was also really surprised to see how many people attended the show...I wonder if it's the venue or that his fan base is just growing? Hopefully the latter, but I hope that never affects the wonderful intimate little venues he plays! Hopefully we'll meet up next time Beth! You'd be surprised how many people were there in tan & white! Darn, don't think I can make either of the West Chester shows, as I'll be out of town that weekend. Have fun tho whomever is going! Mary - One of the key lines from "People My Age" goes something like this: "What feels good in the darkness looks plain scary in the light". Hope I didn't butcher your lyrics John! What a thoroughly enjoyable show Sunday night! He did so many of my favorites. Still hoping one of these days to hear "Campaign Trail". Perhaps next year! ~~Kris ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V2 #88 *******************************
