At a particularly low point in my life (details not necessary as we have all had those low points) I was given a compilation CD by the owner of my local independent music shop. It was a Live From Mountain Stage CD. That night after I put my baby to bed I went into the living room, plugged in the head phones and lay back on the living room floor to listen and get lost in the music for a while. The third song on that CD was Gypsy Life.....talk about someone reading your mind. Even though I knew I would stay in my marriage and in this struggle.....those words gave me that momentary escape that I needed. I played that song over and over and over and the next day went back and ordered my first Gorka CD, Temporary Road. As my budget allowed I purchased all his CDs and with the help of the Internet, discovered that I wasn't alone in my passion for this music. That was 1993. I am still here. That baby is now 6 and on his way to his first baseball game and I have seen John perform 9 times. I cannot seem to get enough. His lyrics fuel my spirit in a way that no other singer/songwriter has.....save for perhaps David Wilcox. Gypsy Life is still high on my list of favorite tunes and every time it plays, no matter where my thinking might be I am pulled back to that first night when I heard that rich baritone voice deep in my psyche. The other teacher who shares my office at school asked me to come to see John play in a little place in Fairlawn, New Jersey. There were only 10 people in the entire place (this was two years ago), but John just played and had a real good time, especially with his Jersey songs (I'm from New Jersey, and especially Italian Girls), and since then I've gotten all the CDs. Next month I'm going to see him twice, once in Westwood, N.J. (June 10 or 11) and again at the Bottom Line in the Village in New York (June 13). I'm looking forward to it.
