So, looks like things have gotten quiet again in Gorkaland. Maybe this question will pique your interest: How did you become a John Gorka fan? For me, it was because my college roommate had "Out of the Valley", and he played it in our dorm room all the time. I heard "That's Why", and immediately wanted to sing and play just like him. So, let's hear the story of YOUR first experience with JG's music! Cheers, - -JWR ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 10:47:39 PDT From: "Sean Palen" Subject: Re: All's quiet.... Hey JGers I was driving about four or five years ago an d the local folk show, a college gig now disbanned, played Love is Our Cross to Bear, after the first line I was hooked. I was so struck by the imagery I pulled over, found a pay phone, and called the radio station to see just who was singing. Haven't been Gorka-free since!! Am eagerly awaiting my next local Gorka fix on June 25th (complete with Lucy Kaplansky!). THis will be a first for me, as I've only ever heard John solo before. Based on everyone's comments on his shows with Lucy, I am really looking forward to this! I heard "Good Noise" on the radio, and RAN OUT to get the CD. Later that year, I saw him at Falcon Ridge with Catie Curtis and Jennifer Kimball doing back up! Then I met my husband and inherited almost all of his albums! I have to admit, I haven't familiarized myself as much with his other albums as I have Good Noise. If you could wear out a CD, it would be worn out...... - ----Original Message Follows---- From: "John W. Richard, Jr." Reply-To: good-noise@smoe.org To: Subject: All's quiet.... I first discovered John in June, 1991 when I was on a work assignment in Worcester MA. I was browsing through a small independent music store when I spotted John's "Jack Crow's" disc. I thought his name sounded familiar from listening to the local public radio station and so I bought the CD (it was his red shoelaces that clinched the purchase). I took the CD back to my hotel room, put it in a portable CD player, laid down on the bed, put on the headphones... and was hooked from the first line. I was listening to Jim Blum's Saturday evening folk music program on WKSU 89.7 FM. My husband and I heard an acoustic guitar piece that we both LOVED, so we printed out the playlist to see who the artist was. Due to (fortuitous!) human error, the actual song/CD/artist ('Coming Home', Metamorphosis, Seth Austen) was listed as 'Out of My Mind', I Know, John Gorka. So, we trotted out to Borders, bought "I Know" and became instant fans (mostly on the strength of "I Saw A Stranger With Your Hair", "Love Is Our Cross To Bear" and of course, "Out Of My Mind"). We started listening for his songs, buying his tapes and CD's and have never been disappointed yet! I listened long enough to the station to hear that the name was "John Gorka". Hmm. Interesting. Filed it in my Music to Get list which I keep in the back of my head. Then forgot about it, more or less. You know how those lists in your head are. :) Sometime later, I remember hearing a feature on NPR about the "New Folk Revolution", and John Gorka was cited as a prominent player. Hmm. Where have I heard that before...oh, yes! I heard that "bottles" song on the radio. They also played several clips of his songs, which piqued my interest further. THEN, someone I knew picked up a copy of Windham Hill's "Winter's Solstice", I think WS II, actually. John sings a song on it that opens with the line "I heard the bells on Christmas day..." I was so taken with the song that it gave me that shivery, goosebumpy feeling in my arms and legs. In fact, I just had that feeling again thinking about the song. That put John in the forefront of my Music to Get list. Sometime after I bought "Jack's Crows", since I recognized "Where the Bottles Break." From then on, I was hooked. And actually, that was my introduction to folk music. Ethan Banks - ----- Original Message ----- From: John W.
