I myself am a singer/songwriter in San Antonio TX and am impressed every time I put on one of his cds at how good he really is. I am always looking for obscure covers to throw into my act, so I will ask one blanket quesiton to the entire list, aside from the awsome tab page by Gregory Steele and the OLGA page, has anybody tabbed any other of JGs songs? This way I figure people won't keep asking , myself included, for songs that they might as well just learn themselves. I've been trying to remember when I first heard, saw John...I know it was around the time of his first record - it could have been before as I hung out at the Speakeasy in New York and Folk City and saw a lot of the Fast Folk crowd before they had record deals (Shawn Colvin, Lucy Kaplansky, John, Christine Lavin, etc). So it's been a long time - the early 1980's. And since I'm From New Jersey (town 5 minutes from Colonia where John lived), we bonded immediately. I've been listening to: Lucy Kaplansky - Ten Year Night Cheryl Wheeler - Sylvia Hotel Ani Difranco - Up Up Up Up Up Up Linda Rondstat, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris - Trio II Susan Werner - Time Between Trains John Gorka - Temporary Road (I love to sing along to this in the car) susan mailto:skrauss@hooked.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Mar 1999 14:31:18 +0000 From: John Richard Subject: Re: one encompassing question Well, Sean, I haven't seen the Gregory Steele page so I'm not sure what on it, but I do own "The John Gorka Guitar Collection", and it's a pretty great source of tabs. I bought it at a JG concert in early '97, and I've learned several of the songs. John's guitar style can be pretty uniform at times, and he loves the capo, which makes even his more difficult songs easy to play. Here are some of the songs in the book: I Saw a Stranger With Your Hair Love is our Cross to Bear The Sentinel When She Kisses Me Good Noise Land of the Bottom Line Branching Out Silence Blue Chalk That's Why Can You Understand My Joy? That's How Legends Are Made Armed With A Broken Heart And a few others. The book includes written music and tab, as well as chord designations for the strummy parts. I'm on a foreign computer right now, so I don't have the book handy, but if you'd like I can give you the publisher's name and maybe they could tell you where to find it. Or perhaps someone else on the list would have more information. Anyway, happy playing and singing! I haven't seen the book myself but I know books of guitar stuff are much better than they used to be. But, gee, I'd hate to have to relearn all this stuff... :-) http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gregorysteele/gorka_indx.htm Greg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Mar 1999 20:45:48 EST From: SAbrams613@aol.com Subject: Re: So What's In YOUR Player? Hi. For an introduction, I am female, almost 45 (will be in April), married 22 years (to first best friend, male), play acoustic guitar (second best friend, formerly one or two trees and some abalone) and really like quirky to subversive humor. During the day I work in a state prison (almost 10 years- that's 1/3 of the way to a full pension). Most of the musical stuff we own are the silver linings to extensive overtime incurred during murders, maimings, riots and other disasters. Currently residing in my CD player (bought with overtime $$$ from a rather gruesome inmate-on-inmate murder a few years ago) are the following CD's: Ring Some Changes: Jim Henry & Brooks Williams Skip, Hop & Wobble: Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg & Edgar Meyer Melodies of Memories: Franco Morone LAGQ: The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet Message of the Sea: David Russell (a promo CD from one of my husband's students who's hooked up with Telarc) In my tape player at work (yes, in the joint) are several made-it-at-home compilations mixing John Gorka, The Austin Lounge Lizards, Al Petteway, The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Pentangle, Steeleye Span and the old Windham Hill Guitar Sampler. Favorite John Gorka line? "Pittsburgh has the Steelers, the Pirates and the thieves". Loved him from the moment I heard it! Has anyone else heard this: This past summer a friend who saw John perform in Colorado said that a film crew from the program Artist Profile was video taping John for an upcoming segment. Does anyone have any information on that project or was it just a wonderful dream? I'll be picking the book up from a local distributer this coming week. It's $20 and has I believe 21 songs in it. If anyone wants to know more, I can post it when I get it. --Dan "I'm from New Joisey, no I don't talk that way...." ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V2 #28 *******************************
