LOL!! Seriously though, I am a big time fan. I was first introduced to John at the 1990 Philly Folk Festival. Since he only played a few songs and it was a festival type atmosphere, I wasn't really "WOWED" at first. Then he made an appearance for some radio station at Trump Plaza - and of course he decided to play "Where the Bottles Break" with the not-so-nice lines about "The Donald". With a sense of humor like that, I was instantly won over!!!! Hmmm, in my player currently is quite a bit. We just broke down and bought a 60 disk changer, because we have so much music that we love! I have all of John's CD's in there, lots of Good Old Grateful Dead, The Band, Trout Fishing in America, Jimmy Buffett, Neil Diamond, Dr. Hook, Sam Cooke, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Janis Joplin - quite a wide range of artists. However, I do like the disk changer quite a bit because (for some reason) when I hit "Random" it STILL picks up quite a bit from CD's 1 thru 7 - can you guess who's CD's they are? Have a good one folks! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 14:40:14 -0500 From: Frank_R_Elia@dlc.dqe.com Subject: Re: So What's In YOUR Player? - --0__=bTYDDZe8WqWC2CbAinsIaynF5RbP02vvz4Cd7yPCLg5xPz5ywrUAMn8a Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline I first discovered John in 1991 in Worcester MA. I was there on a work assignment and began listening to the radio station WBGN. This is when I discovered folk music. I spotted John's "Jack Crow's" disc in a record store and thought his name sounded familiar and so I bought the CD (it was his red shoelaces that clinched the purchase). I took the CD back to my hotel room, put it in a portable CD player, layed down on the bed, put on the headphones... and I was never the same again. John was the first folk(non-mainstream) artist's CD I had ever purchased. His mention of Nanci Griffith on the "I Know" CD prompted me to pick up her stuff, and she mentioned someone and then they mentioned someone... and a whole new world opened up to me. I cannot overemphasize the impact that John has had on the music I listen to today. I Regards, Frank "Some accidents are years in the making, some rabbits feet can rub you raw" My CD player is a very busy place... in the past few days I have listened to the following in either the car, home or at work: Bad Livers - Dust on the Bible Van Morrison - The Healing Game Susan Werner - Time Between Trains Anne Hills & Cindy Mangsen - Never Grow Old Robbie Fulks - Country Love Songs Loreena McKennitt - The Visit Keb - --0__=bTYDDZe8WqWC2CbAinsIaynF5RbP02vvz4Cd7yPCLg5xPz5ywrUAMn8a Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-transfer-encoding: quoted-printable ? I fell in love with John Gorka this last January (?) when my boyfriend and a number of our friends from Lubbock dragged me to the show. I had heard them rant and rave about this man and found out that what they were saying was true! Since I am a college student, I can't afford much in the realm of new CDs, but the wonderful man in my life has purchased one for me... The CDs in my CD player are... Well, I first heard John on the radio in Ketchikan, Alaska. I had just moved there and was driving down the road listening to the radio when "Raven in the Storm" came on. I was so struck by it that I immediately pulled over, found a payphone, and called the radio station to see who it was. Been an addict ever since. What's odd is that I hadn't heard of John before, because I used to live in New England and was a big fan of a lot of the folks on the coffeehouse circuit (Patty Larkin, Cheryl Wheeler, Bill Morrissey, etc.). My car hasn't been without at least one Gorka tape in the tapeholder since that day in Ketchikan back in 1990. I've since moved, making it much easier for me to get to John's shows! As for what's currently stacked up next to the player... John Prine Anthology Old and Inthe Way 2 random Grateful Dead CDs (don't remember which ones just now) All Gorka CDs (I don't bother putting them away anymore...) Bill Morrissey - Inside, Standing Eight, and the Mississippi John Hurt CD Patty Larkin - Step into the Light Lyle Lovett - Step Inside this House Robert Johnson Anthology Cheers - Mary ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 15:59:01 EST From: ThePsyche@aol.com Subject: Re: So What's In YOUR Player? I'm a 22-year old college student, and I've been listening to Gorka's music since 1994. My freshman year roommate had a copy of "Out of the Valley", and I borrowed it and almost didn't give it back! I've seen him three times at the Cactus Cafe here in Austin, and he keeps getting better. I'm afraid I can't quite afford the 36,586-disc changers that most of you seem to have (remember-college student), but here's the stack of CDs sitting by my single CD player: John Gorka - After Yesterday John Gorka - I Know Rush - Different Stages Sister 7 - This the Trip Stevie Ray Vaughan - Greatest Hits Breedlove - Reach Out (GREAT Austin, TX band - If you find it, buy it!!)
