Hi Gorka fans: Like Ethan, I go through spells when I don't have a Gorka disc in my CD player. I usually carry "Temporary Road" and or "Land of the Bottom Line" tapes in the car, though, but I am lucky to have really good radio here, WRNR in Annapolis and WXPN from Philadelphia -- both of which actually play John Gorka, but not all the time. It is a rush to start your car and hear "When She Kisses Me" come through your speakers. I truly have sympathy for you Midwesterners when it comes to radio and concerts. Can't wait to hear "Ten Year Night" on the radio. It's only a matter of time. I believe this record is edgy enough to make some alternative playlists. Lucy fans, cross your fingers. I have a three-disc player. Right now it's loaded with Lucy's new disc, which I played through three times yesterday, an Acoustic Artists sample disc which has some interesting tunes, and James Keelaghan's "A Recent Future," on loan to me from my girlfriend. He wrote "Cold Missouri Waters" that Cry Cry Cry recorded. That song is on that disc. Since you guys listed a bunch, I'll list what I listened to before Lucy's new disc took over my consciousness. Last week, the feature disc was "The Joel Rafael Band," also a loaner while my girlfriend was spinning Cry Cry Cry. I was also listening to LJ Booth. Saturday night, my girl and I listened to a Chris Smither set: "Up on the Lowdown," "Happier Blue" and "Another Way to Find You." It is perfect mood music. :) - -- Jay Votel Ethan & Summerset Banks wrote: > >Lets get some action going on this list. I also have David Wilcox-How Did you Find Me Here in my player, Land of the Bottom Line- JG, and Columbia Radio Hour (Volume 1 I think). Lot's of favorites in a stack that I put in at random, all JG catalog, Bruce Springsteen, Dar Williams, Jane Kelly Williams, Lyle Lovett , any 107.1 Austin sampler, Patty Griffin-Living with Ghosts(recommend highly if you haven't picked it up already), the list goes on forever and the music never ends(bad Robert Earl Keen joke). Second, I am curious if anyone has the chords for Down in the Milltown figured out, I guess I could do it myself, but that's laziness for you. Thanks, take it easy Sean Second ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Mar 1999 12:58:11 PST From: "Sean Palen" Subject: one that got away Being new to the list, I'm just curious how large a group I'm interacting with; what topics not to repeat, I don't want to be one of THOSE people. For a long shot here, any DC-Balt listers going to the Hillbilly Funk Allstars(HFA) show in Towson tonight? I've mentioned my Gorka chord site a couple of times already :-) I don't have The One That Got Away up there yet, but have been busy on some other stuff. I think someone asked for Down In the Milltown too. Guess I need to get back to it... I am not sure who the owner of this list is....is it you Chris? As for what to say...what to repeat....I have only been in the list since summer and it is a quiet, friendly sort of a thing. Every once in a while we all seem to get a burst of enthusiasm to write and share and then we quietly drift off to our lives and such until the next time the addiction hits us. Since you wonder about us, I will start. I am a 43 year old mother of one, married twenty years to the same man, (quite an accomplishment in this day and age). But that relationship has not been without its troubles and worries and it was during a particularly dark period a few years back that I found John on a compilation disc, Live From Mountain Stage. The song was Gypsy Life. The rest is my personal history. I discovered all the wonderful CDs, the magical voice, and the unforgettable characterizations in John's music. In quick succession I bought them all. With patience, marriage counseling, and good music, we survive to fight another day. I too have often wondered just how many others were on this list.....maybe everyone could jump in for a brief post with the proverbial online age/sex check thang. but lets add a twist.....after your age and sex....write down one of your favorite Gorka lines. SO: Bryn, 43, female She wasn't a stranger to loneliness, she'd grown up and spent her life there ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Mar 1999 18:02:45 -0500 From: Jay Votel Subject: Re: one that got away Responding to Paula's request for how we all landed on this list, I offer the following personal history: Back in the late 1980s, I was a working journalist on a small town newspaper. One of the reporters I hired, Tracy by name, was a big fan of folk music as well as a singer. The two of us worked up some children's songs and performed in a few classrooms together and, after she heard my singing and playing, gave me a copy of "I Know" on tape, saying, "I know you're gonna like this." Jobs, titles, co-workers, a marriage, children, friends, singing partnerships, even ways-of-life, all have come and gone for me. But one thing has remained constant since that summer evening in Cambridge, Md., as Tracy handed me her tape. I was hooked by "I Know" and I have followed John Gorka ever since. I routinely drive hours and hours to see him perform and he has opened up a world of folk music for me. I have met many performers by way of attending Gorka concerts and for the past three years while I have been online, I have posted concert reviews and set lists and, for the last several months, have been part of this discussion group. I have led many of my friends to become Gorka fans by way of taking them to concerts, loaning them CDs, giving discs as gifts. Music is a big part of my life and John Gorka's songs speak to me in a way few other artists have. For that, and for the friendships I have found here and in the folk world John's music led me to, I am deeply grateful. Jay Votel, 42, male. "They built the prison by the freeway, just to rub it in."
