The band is great live, isn't it? Nice job transcribing the tunes. I can see myself spending some time trolling through your site. If you think of folk music as a connect-the-dots picture, and all the artists as the dots, you get a good idea of the whole picture of folk music. I heard Lucy open for John and sing with him once several years back and I was hooked on her music. (Her new CD will be out in March, by the way.) I saw Dar and Richard play at a festival that I first attended because John was playing there. Later, I saw Dar open for Holly Near. Dot-to-dot-to-dot. I saw Trout Fishing in America and John together once and became a big fan of theirs; same was true with Hugh Blumenfeld, who I've seen open for Jonathan Edwards and John Sebastian since then. (Hugh is mentioned in the liner notes on "After Yesterday.") Connecting the dots again: Lucy sings backup on a couple of Hugh's CDs. Adding more dots: Jonathan Edwards performs several of Cheryl Wheeler's songs. I had liked her CD, "Mrs. Pinocci's Guitar," but never knew she was so influential on other musicians. Still more dots: Trout Fishing in America was headlining a festival where I got acquainted with the music of Robin and Linda Williams and others. Dots going to the margins: I didn't realize it when I saw John and Andy Stochansky together in December that Andy had played drums for Ani DeFranco, who I got to see perform two summers ago on a three-way bill featuring BR5-49 and Bob Dylan. It goes on and on, and I've hardly scratched the surface. Although this is a Gorka list, I haven't heard anyone on it object to material about other artists in the big folk picture. Almost every time I see him, John himself brings up the influence Stan Rogers had on him. Stan Rogers is the subject of John's song, "That's How Legends Are Made." That led me to investigate the whole area of music from the Maritime Provinces. I am sure he would approve. Folk tradition started when a song was first passed from player to player and singer to singer. It continues to this day. It's a big picture and there's lots of room left on it to fill. Thanks for being part of it, Greg. - -- Jay Votel Greg Steele wrote: > Since the list's been a little quiet, and since it's MARGINALLY related > (via Lucy Kaplansky), I'd like to mention to all you guitarists that > I've added a Cry, Cry, Cry page to my guitar site with chords to most of > the songs on their CD. Please excuse my cross posts--there is relevant content.... Well, it is nice that we mere mortals are finally getting our hands on Lucy's new cd. It is now for sale at her shows. This album is outstanding! Lucy's voice, the songs, the musicians, the backgrounds and harmonies (Richard Shindell, John Gorka, Jennifer Kimball), and the production are all unbelievable. RockinRonD was right--as great a song as Ten Year Night is--and it is amazing--it may not be the best song on the album. As a matter of fact, after playing the record virtually nonstop for 24 hours, I still can't decide which song is the best. I could go on (and on and on) but I'll stop. I think I've said it all. One last point....this will be up at the top of everyone's list for album of the year....now I'm done.... Harvey np--Are you serious????I can't stop listening to it.... ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V2 #24 *******************************
