She did two sets, opening with "Speaking With the Angel," from the Cry Cry Cry album. She did most of my favorites from her two records, including "Scorpion," from "Flesh & Bone" and Robin Batteau's "Guinivere" from "The Tide." She also performed the title track from "Ten Year Night" and "Turn the Lights Back On," a rocker she wrote for her forthcoming disc, and closed with "Goodnight," the Cliff Eberhardt lullaby. She is really hitting her stride as a writer and performer now, I think, and getting more and more attention -- still not up to the fame of her former partner Shawn Colvin, though. Still, I could listen to her sing all night. George Wurzbach, one of the funniest singer-songwriters I have ever heard, opened for the show. I bought his CD just so I could listen to his song, "I'm God" again. He had me pounding the table and laughing 'til I cried, and upon looking around, I found I wasn't the only one. For those of you in the D.C. area interested in folk venues for artists like Lucy -- and John Gorka, on occasion -- use a search engine and look up "Vic's Music Corner." Vic Hayman is one of the D.C. area's most active folk concert organizers. He and his wife Reba are huge supporters of this kind of music, even opening their home to musicians to stay when they come to the area to play. His Web site has lots of links to some of the smaller venues in the region, which you can use to keep up with artists you want to see. O'Brien's Barbecue in Rockville has about two concerts a month, usually on the second and fourth Wednesdays. It seats less than 200, has good food and good sound. It's a smoke-free quiet listening room. And you can pick up fliers there for forthcoming concerts, such as George Wurzbach's appearance in two weeks at the Folkal Point in Columbia, Md., as well as house concerts in Columbia and elsewhere. You can go to these places and really get to know an artist, meet new performers and have a really great time, pick up a CD and get them to autograph it. Admission is generally $10 or less, so you can see they have a lot of advantages over the big concert stages. Gorka's next forays into the Mid-Atlantic region will be April 23-24 at May's Chapel in Timonium, Md. (a Unitarian church and wonderful concert space), April 25 at the Delaware Theater Company in Wilmington, Del., (look for me in the second row) and May 14 at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va. Karen, you also asked... Lucy will be at the Barns of Wolftrap March 25. Tickets are going fast. Here are more Lucy dates for you folks outside the beltway... 1/30 Grace Norton Rogers School, Hightstown, NJ (609) 259-5764 co-bill with Ellis Paul 2/3 The Colatina Exit, Bradford, VT (802) 222-4748 2/4 Drylongso Coffeehouse, W. Much of this information is available online from Dirty Linen, the folk and world music quarterly, and Musi-Cal listings. I also subscribe to Lucy's e-mail list, among other lists. If you go and get to say hi to Lucy, tell her you heard about the show online. She really likes hearing about how fans are staying in touch this way. Lucy also is singing backup on the new Cheryl Wheeler album which is due out any day now. I don't like to clutter this Gorka discussion group with news of other artists unless it is specifically Gorka-related, hence my first note on this thread about Lucy's forthcoming album with John singing harmonies. But I'll be happy to oblige if you ask. - -- Jay Votel SpecGlobal@aol.com wrote: > Jay: > > Your post didn't mention how Lucy's show went.
