I've been on the list for just a few weeks. Last saw John in Charlotte NC, back in December. My 14 year-old son (another fan) and I took a guitar-buddy of mine to see him. Yet another enthusiastic disciple... Heard the "butt" song for the first time :-) Check out my site for things Gorka and other related favorites: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gregorysteele/gorka_indx.htm http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gregorysteele/songindx.htm http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gregorysteele/musiclin.htm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jan 1999 05:07:51 PST From: "Kevin Rent" Subject: Re: testing this list yes, I'm here... life is fine in Canada. This discussion group has been inactive for way too long. The so-called "Land of Pleasant Living" here on the Chesapeake is bitterly cold today. For those of you who, like me, like to keep up with John AND his friends: I saw Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell last night with Dar Williams -- Cry Cry Cry - -- at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va. Despite a communal cold, they were in fine voice. Lucy, who has provided fine backing vocals on several Gorka discs, also performed the title track of her forthcoming recording from Red House, "Ten Year Night," now due out in March. (John sang some backup for Lucy on her second record, "Flesh & Bone.") Richard, once a member of the Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band with John in Bethlehem, Pa., was a powerful presence in the group. His "Ballad of Mary Magdalene" is the only non-cover on the trio's record. It's a terrific song and they put on a wonderful show. Cry Cry Cry's eponymous CD (on Razor and Tie records) was voted No. 31 on the WXPN top 50 albums of 1998 in Philadelphia. WXPN, public radio from the University of Pennsylvania, is a major folk station in the East with remote broadcasting that reaches into Harrisburg, the Lehigh Valley, Baltimore and New Jersey. John's "Between Five and Seven" was No. 27 in 1996. "After Yesterday" didn't make this year's list.
