The only minor disappointment was that he did not do Grand Larceny, one of my favs. I thought he might since it the song is about being ripped off in Pittsburgh. It was requested but he said he has a moritorium on his Crime and Punishment songs....anyone know why? First of, it was a romantic anniversary weekend which is definitely possible in gray, cloudy Pittsburgh if you happen to like the person you are there with. ( which I do) My husband of twenty years is not a Gorkanatic like I am, but he came away from this concert with a real appreciation of John and his music and most of all, his humor. The venue, Rosebud Theater is in an area of Pittburgh called The Strip District. It consists of wholesale markets, wholesale product warehouses, interesting restaurants and music venues. The Rosebud seems to have been one of those giant type warehouse spaces that has been turned into a nightclub. Good food, cheap and the acoustics were not bad for a larger room. About 400+ in attendance at this show with a mix of first timers and long time fans. I accomplished my first set list ever. Since we were seated at a table, sipping coffee and munching cheesecake it was an easy task. So here it is with a few personal remarks: A Little Slow (said it's the oldest song he wrote that he still performs, written at 19) I'm From New Jersey Meanstreak My Name Is Edgar Cypress Trees (sentimentality at its best!!!) Land Of The Bottom Line (He mentioned here before he started this song that this was the kind of music he was best known for and that joy was something still pretty new to him) Heroes (told the story about how he got this one back) Let Them In Peter (on piano) The Pilot Light Went Out On Our Oven of Love (his Mom's favorite song and it was her birthday) Lightening Blues Branching Out Winter Cows Blue Chalk Up Until Then (Highlight of the night for me, sung acapella....A Pure Chaos Moment) Winter Song Stranger With Your Hair Semper Fi (one of the best renditions I have ever heard him give of the story and the song) When He Cries Where the Bottle Breaks (sung for the two anniversary couples in the house) Reason To Believe (first time I ever heard him do this...God, I love hearing his voice and his interpretation of a song....done on piano) House In The Fields (on piano) Body Parts (I still want all these lyrics if anyone has them memorized) January Floor Part of Your own After yesterday Wee Small hours of The Morning (his encore song....said it was the first time doing it for an audience. What a song.....but beware of strong emotions and sentimentality here, it is the =only one I will request for a while.) The Water is Wide on Piano I love John's music. I love his performance style and stage persona. He has a way of drawing you in, making you laugh at him, at yourself, at the stuff of life, and in the next moment, puts you in your emotional place. His sensitivity to others and his observations of daily life are what really grab me every time. We drove over 10 hours each way for this show and were not disappointed. Anyone on this list planning to be at The Chicago Show December 12th? You know I am!! Both the early and the late shows. Adios for now. I hope you are all well and have a great Thanksgiving holiday. Subject: RE: Pittsburgh has the Steelers, the Pirates and the theives My husband and I live in Pittsburgh, so you can bet we were at the show. We were there with friends including the guy who first introduced us to John Gorka and another couple that we have converted. My husband thought it was the best John Gorka show that we've been to. We arrived early, so we had a great table with a good view. For those of you who have never been to Pittsburgh, as a native, I can tell you that Pittsburgh isn't always gray and cloudy. In fact, right now the sun is shining strongly and it is a bright, crisp day. Although I've visited many places, I love living in Pittsburgh. In addition to the Strip District that Bryn mentioned, we have many great places to enjoy music (from rock to symphony), shows, shopping, outdoor activities and dining. One of the best venues for hearing John Gorka in Pittsburgh is a large concert stage in a suburban county park. They always have free concerts and John did a show there. Have a nice Thanksgiving weekend. I plan to relax and enjoy, so you can bet that Gorka music will be a part of my weekend. This is getting me excited for his Dec 2 show in Virginia. Did John perform solo in Pittsburgh? I have seen him twice, and he was solo both times. For his Virginia show he will have Andy Stochansky on drums, and a special guest Jennifer Kimball. At Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem PA, Russ Rentler (a friend from his old college days) sat in on the dobro. I saw him with Lucy Kaplansky (who compliments John's voice SO well and adds nicely to his songs) and I've seen him with Karen Lynn (a few times), a violinist. Also, at Godfrey's 20th anniversary, he did a trio(?) of Promnight in Pigtown with Trout Fishing in America. I think there may be a couple others I'm not remembering right now. It definitely adds a little something (not that John needs any help at all ;-) P.S. - Hey all you Pittsburgher's - beep "HI" at Kennywood for me the next you pass by there, ok? Thanks! You only need to listen to the first couple of tracks on the new albumn to discern this. Live, she does just as well if not better. Further on the topic of live accompaniments, John for a few years did a few select shows with Patty Larkin, Cliff Eberhart, and Cheryl Wheeler, called "On A Winter's Night". I saw it once and it was great. It basically operates as a trade off round table approach to the songs, with everyone contributing (kind of like Richard Buckner just did on his last tour with Kelly Willis and her husband). Although the songs of any one individual may seem to be staggered, there are some wonderful moments -- the full ensemble doing "Looking Forward" was really nice, and to hear everyone pitch in for Cliff's "My Father's Shoes" -- with John singing the Richie Havens part was wonderful. Anyone know if this is happening again this year? -Eric - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- > I've seen John lots of times (maybe 20-25 times)and there have been > several occasions that he's played with someone else.
