I'll try to catch the name next time or request it. By the way, you may be able to get the program I am talking about using Real Audio Player and the NPR website. The program, Folkways, is on every Sat. 9AM - 2PM. - - chris At 09:37 PM 11/6/98 -0800, you wrote: > > >----Original Message Follows---- >Date: Thu, 05 Nov 1998 09:17:38 -0600 >To: good-noise@smoe.org >From: Chris Smith >Subject: Re: Tribute album ??? >Reply-To: good-noise@smoe.org > >I would like to hear him sing " The night I creamated sam McGee ", >or some Steve Forbert tunes. > >There is a SONG based on that poem? I got After Yesterday from CDNow - very efficient, it came in 9 days. I was impressed. I wasn't so impressed by the import duty, the VAT (tax) and the administration charge. Beware if ordering from the UK! I ordered Lyle Lovett's new one at the same time and despite the postage costs and the import charges, still came out ahead. But only because CD's cost so much here... But anyway, After Yesterday... well, overshadowed by Step Inside This House somewhat. But, I'd probably rate it just about (not quite) equal with Between Five and Seven, i.e.. pretty good. January Floor and Thorny Patch are my favourites so far. The songs about John's new family don't do much for me though. I can't help thinking those kind of songs are best kept to yourself (like John's song about his mother on BFAS that I always skip). When He Cries is my least favourite song. what's with the misprinted song list on the CD cover? Done on purpose I presume (I hope), but why? Loved the banjo playing though. It reminded me of Don McLean - the intro isn't dissimilar to Don's version of Sitting on Top Of the World. I hope he does more in the future. It has been a personal joy to watch John's music change as his life has, but then, if you start with I KNOW and trace the man's life through his music you can see the growth, the pain, the laughter. If John had, as you wrote, kept it to himself, then there would be no John Gorka music. His strength ( in my opinion) is in his willingness to put it all out there, the good, the bad, the twisted, and yes, even the slightly sappy feelings that come from parenthood. As for Part Of Your Own, it is one of favorite Gorka songs because it touches on that piece of our lives......the place we all come from, our childhood home. My own Mother is ill and every day we lose a little bit more of her. I find the song helps me line my emotions up instead of feeling all jumbled inside. To each his own. For me, After Yesterday is his best, second only to Land Of The Bottom Line. I like that I put it on and play it straight through without hitting the forward button once unlike on some of John's earlier CDs. Parenthood does strange things to a soul. I know from first hand experience. Its that ancient new direction thang.....gets ya every time. At his Berkeley concert, hearing "Semper Fi" and "A Part of Your Own" was magical. You could feel the love John feels for his mom and for the dad he never really knew. It's rare that you find someone so open about loving a parent. It was all the more meaningful with the new songs about his wife and son. susan ------------------------------ End of good-noise-digest V1 #38 *******************************
