Eric: I agree, I went home last night and listened to it a few times and intended to send the same message today... it is quite an amazing performance. The song is called Christmas Bells and it is on Winter Solstice III. I would like to see John do a whole album of Christmas songs with some old American traditional songs from the 1700 & 1800's, along with some Frank Sinatra style songs like 'I'll be home for Christmas", and even throw in "Frosty the Snowman" with a Gorka twist that would place it in his "Crime and punishment" repertiore... oh, I can dream.... I have to say that the best Gorka "cover" I've ever heard is the Longfellow poem he did for one of the Winter Solstice albumns on Windham Hill (I think it was II?). Maybe this is a little out of category, but I still think it's just beautiful. -Eric - --On Thursday, November 05, 1998, 6:26 AM +0000 "Kevin Rent" wrote: > I think that John should record a compilation CD of songs from > songwriters who he likes... i.e. Pete Seeger, Kate Wolf, Phil Ochs, Stan > Rogers. > > I have only heard John sing "The Water is Wide" and was awestruck. Apparently, they swapped songs and song ideas, polished their own ideas and took the constructive criticism of their peers in group sessions. Among those present during various sessions, that I know of, were Cliff Eberhardt, John Gorka and Hugh Blumenfeld. There were others whose names I don't know. I doubt the group meets regularly anymore, but a lot of the material John put on "Jack's Crows" apparently came out in those sessions. eer20@hermes.cam.ac.uk wrote: > Not to carry this too off-topic, but Jay, what is the "Jack's Crow's" > School? > > --On Thursday, November 05, 1998, 11:54 AM -0500 "Jay Votel" > wrote: > > > Shirley: Because of the administrative change in this list I can't respond > to > > you personally, so I apologize in advance for those who might take offense > at > > the non-Gorka content of this note. Reply-To: good-noise@smoe.org Well, I don't really know if John likes Bob Dylan or not, but I would like to hear him cover some early Dylan tunes. One that comes to mind is, "One Too Many Mornings". For some reason I think this song would fit John's voice perfectly. - --chris >What songs do you think John would do a great version of? I would love to hear him do a Harry Chapin song! (By the by, my local folk station (WUMB in Boston) doesnt play Harry Chapin! Whatz up with that! :-) Prayers. Amy Amy E.
