[Jay Votel ] Re: Interesting "After Yesterday" story [Jay Votel Subject: Tribute album ??? I think that John should record a compilation CD of songs from songwriters who he likes... i.e. Pete Seeger, Kate Wolf, Phil Ochs, Stan Rogers. I have only heard John sing "The Water is Wide" and was awestruck. And from all accounts, John's version of Stan Rogers "The Jeannie C" is amazing. Appreciating Stan's song, I'd really like to hear John sing this. :( too bad he doesn't come here... :( Oh well, that's life. What songs do you think John would do a great version of? I'll pipe in with what I think after this discussion gets going... Well, I must run now, class awaits. Hugh told me the rest of the story at a break in his concert last night, Nov. 4, 1998, in Sykesville, Md. Hugh's wife Andrea liked the song "Heroes," after hearing John play it live. John taught Hugh how to play it at the Kerrville Folk Festival years ago, and Hugh wrote down the words so he could perform the song for his wife. Soon after that came the famous "Grand Larceny" incident, immortalized by John on "Temporary Road." The song was in a notebook stolen along with John's guitar in Pittsburgh. Hugh said he asked John about the song some years after that and it turned out that he, Hugh, had the sole copy of the lyrics, which he shared again with John. The result is on "After Yesterday." - -- Jay Votel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Nov 1998 10:08:05 -0500 From: Chris Thorpe Subject: Re: Tribute album ??? Well, I don't really know if John likes Bob Dylan or not, but I would like to hear him cover some early Dylan tunes. One that comes to mind is, "One Too Many Mornings". For some reason I think this song would fit John's voice perfectly. - --chris >What songs do you think John would do a great version of? > ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Nov 1998 10:20:51 EST From: Achimera@aol.com Subject: Re: Tribute album ??? Dear Kevin, Its funny you should suggest the compilation cd, I was just thinking the same thing! When did you come up with the idea? Maybe we had a simultaneous thought!!:) I have seen John Gorka perform 6 times and have driven 14 hour round trips to do so. Only once have I heard him in my own backyard(Chicago). So you might have to make a road trip to see him. As for what songs I would like him to cover, he has played "Its a wonderful world" and "You don't know me" and both are beautiful. However I love the sound of his voice so much that I would pay good money to hear him sing the yellow pages. I have heard John sing "Its a wondreful world" and " You don't know me" and both are fabulous. But, I love the sound of John's voice so much that I would pay big money just to hear him sing the yellow pages. I would like to hear him sing " The night I creamated sam McGee ", or some Steve Forbert tunes. Luckily, we get to hear John in Austin once or twice a year. He sounded great last time he played at the Cactus Cafe. John appears on a Red House tribute to Kate Wolf. There has been some chatter about that on this list before. Regarding his doing cover tunes, I must agree that the "Jeannie C." is one of his most outstanding. He could easily pull off an all-folk cover album a la Bob Dylan's cover effort of a few years ago. Trouble is, it would sell like a folk album, which is to say, poorly. Few of these efforts ever make money. And his originals are so good, I'll be satisfied to hear the occasional cover tune in concert, I think. It is, however, related to the original post and I hope it answers your question. Hugh Blumenfeld has four CDs, "The Strong in Spirit," "Barehanded," "Mozart's Money," and "Rocket Science." He is a past contributing editor to "Fast Folk Magazine," and is one of the songwriters of the former Gorka-inclusive "Jack's Crow's" school. I have to say that the best Gorka "cover" I've ever heard is the Longfellow poem he did for one of the Winter Solstice albumns on Windham Hill (I think it was II?). Maybe this is a little out of category, but I still think it's just beautiful. -Eric - --On Thursday, November 05, 1998, 6:26 AM +0000 "Kevin Rent" wrote: > I think that John should record a compilation CD of songs from > songwriters who he likes... i.e. Pete Seeger, Kate Wolf, Phil Ochs, Stan > Rogers. > > I have only heard John sing "The Water is Wide" and was awestruck.
