For most folk artists, it is the word of mouth marketing that makes or breaks them. I guess I don't see the apples and oranges analogy since trading tapes is what you asked about. Bootleg means to deal in unautohorized items illicitly. Trading or selling is all the same to me. I have attended many of John's shows and heard songs not yet recorded and would L O V E to have them on tape but I *choose* not to in support of John (and other artists like him) who has not authorized the recording of his shows, even if it was only for personal, private use. I guess it comes down to a philisophical point of view. I tend to follow the *do what's right* policy in all my daily living. I guess that this is what is right for me. To each his own. But if this is a public forum to support John Gorka and his music, then maybe the disscussion of or the trading of bootlegs should be done privately. Adios, Bryn **Just my two cents: Catie Curtis has said, kind of off the record "go for it". This was only in regards to her music, and she acknowledged that she would need to refer to her record company's stand when push came to shove. I think John's input on this would be useful. Does anyone know if he ever checks out this list? I have heard some artists, most noteably Garth Brooks, ask that this not been done. He says that many people in the record business lose out, not just the artists. But I agree with those who say that trading tapes, recording shows, etc... will introduce people to an artists music, and supposedly sell other recordings that might not have been sold and think this could be a benefit not only to the artist, but I would assume those others who directly benefit from record sales. But I dont know about the business to know....... Finally, since this issue directly affects John, (or any other artist who has a list), why do you feel the issue should be private? Just curious... Thanks for the thoughtful treatment all have given the issue, its given me a lot to think about..... Amy E. I think if you wish to trade or sell bootlegs, that should be private. I enjoy the discussion, it sparks the thinking and challenges me to reconsider.
