This is why it is so soulful and emotional. I have listened to Bitter repeatedly and have come to realize that the album is like one big story with many flavors like Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On". It flows just like Bitter in the sense that they seem like one song or story with different ups and downs. In my experience, with these kinds of albums I don't naturally distinguish between songs; it's the whole enchalada I'm hearing and feeling. I don't know if I can pick a favorite song, but Fool of Me seems to paralyze me everytime. How can one woman have so much soul? Her groove is so in the pocket she's swimmin' with the lint. Subject: RE: god-shiva-digest V2 #59 Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 14:30:25 -0500 I have read the review from wallofsound and several e-mail post from others who describe the CD, Bitter, as depressing, somber, etc. But am not feeling any of that. I think the music masterfully captures the attributes, including limitations of human love. Above all the music is real and truth (if there is a difference). Any thoughts? Marlon >> I agree with you, Marlon. But I think that if people like this album, they'll REALLY like it, and if they don't like it, they'll REALLY dislike it. It's one of those albums that doesn't seem to induce a gray area reaction from listeners. Personally, the more I listen to it, the more nuanced it seems, and the more I like it. It grows on you. It's best experienced with a good system to hear all the subtle aspects of the musicians in the band. And it IS an emotional experience, just as the first two were, albeit in a different way. I knew this album would be different from her first two from the get-go, and I'm glad it is. I think the people who dislike it are mostly those who are more comfortable with the the status quo, instead of trying something new they're not used to. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 01:27:24 -0700 From: raven@igc.org Subject: San Fran shows Anyone here attend either of the Justice League shows?
