By Jacquelyn Pope On Me'Shell NdegeOcello's third album, Bitter, the singer/ songwriter casts a cold eye on life and love. A glance at the track list provides pretty good picture of the themes on NdegeOcello's mind — sincerity, loyalty, grace. This is a moody, meditative album wherein the songs deepen and darken, proving that simplicity in skillful hands is a force to be reckoned with. Don't put it on if you're not in the mood to wallow in love's vicissitudes. But NdegeOcello cuts the bitter with the sweet, and Bitter is ultimately about being uplifted, for better and worse. Throughout, there is a quiet insistence that slowly accumulates power, alongwith intriguing undertones and a mix of the sexy and the somber that's indicative of the craft that went into this album. In a departure from her previous recordings, NdegeOcello isn't working solo — she's assembled a host of musicians who add enormously to the depth and texture of the album. The opening track is an instrumental ("Adam"), in which a delicate mournful cello is joined and lifted by a soulful percussion section provided by Daniel Sadownick. The response to this track, "Eve," is another instrumental near the close of the CD, which features composer David Torn playing handmade original instruments. Both songs reflect and expand upon each other rather than acting as bookends. NdegeOcello's voice is breathy, bluesy and self-assured, especially on tracks like "Fool of Me," where her vocals seem to emerge from corners, multiplying in a chorus that is, for all its sadness, dignified. "Faithful" (RealAudio excerpt), a meditation on sin, features airy flights of electric guitar provided by Ronnie Drayton. "Satisfy" is funkier and spoken rather than sung — she's testifying. On "Bitter," Wendy Melvoin's acoustic guitar underpins NdegeOcello's vocals. "May This Be Love" (RealAudio excerpt) is a swooning, swirling, hypnotic update of a Jimi Hendrix tune that uses a string section to magnificent effect. The calypso-inflected "Loyalty" is NdegeOcello's take on a Gladys Knight sort of song. "Beautiful" is pretty pillow talk with keyboards and flute that accent the nearly whispered vocals and save the song from becoming an overheard scrap of sweet nothings. The churning "Wasted Time" (RealAudio excerpt) is one of the strongest tracks, featuring guest vocals by Joe Henry, whose twang provides a great counterpoint to NdegeOcello's smokier voice. Together they capture the essence of a futile relationship. The melodic closing track, "Grace," carries NdegeOcello's ultimately hopeful message of the healing power of love — and there's nothing bitter about it.
