They had this funky soul r&b feel esp STAY as a sexy love song. They got a lil play on quite storm shows back then. I think the reason Me'Shell doesn't get play on the more contemporary urban stations unlike stations like Howard U radio, still with those two particular songs has to deal with in short the ownership and programming of today's radio. Maybe if it was 10-15 years ago she would have been play more widely on all black stations but because they feel its hard to "market" her to a particular audience she doesn't get the exposure she deserves. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody like Prince (if he were a new artist) would encounter similar problems today. If ya don't fit into a lil box i.e either rap or r&b, urban radio doesn't know what to do with you. Why do you think music for the most part today is so monolithic among genres. I think one of the reasons Maverick took so long in releasing BITTER was because her original music didn't "fit" what they felt was marketable so she had to redo alot of it. If she wrote a tune called " Dance Dance Dance " we probably couldn't go anywhere without hearing her. she is just what white record labels look 4, black lady with soul that they have no idea about but its got a good beat and you can dance to it. However Me'shell ACTUALLY puts thought into her art and that is when she crosses the line. I mean IMAGINE listening to music that is about something........wow what an idea! anyway I am babbling now.. I can't wait for her record to come out and turn up the soul music. I agree. I think it's a common occurrence in popular music for the public to latch onto one style and beat it into the ground. Not saying that all the people making music and having number one hits aren't truly expressing themselves, but I think a lot of the problem lies in the record buying community as well as the record companies. Many young people, who make up the bulk of record buyers, aren't willing to listen to or even invest any interest in anything that isn't "cool". Yet I know alot of them who have appreciated Me'Shell's music when exposed. I actually think with the increasing exposure of people like Eric Benet, Grenique, Macy Gray and the success of people like Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and D'Angelo that the more "alternative" r&b is making headway. I think this is a great time to release 'Bitter'. That is, I think the environment in music at the moment is bound to be more receptive to Me'shell's music than it has in the past. Not that I think it's done a 180 turnaround but I think this album actually has a better chance of hitting big. I know I for one hope that I can turn on TV and see more than "Bills, Bills, Bills" every five minutes. Hopeful, josh == Joshua Ian-Lawrence Hill <> "His voice was pain. Not like pain.
