I did used to hear OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR and SOUL SEARCHIN' get some rotation on big black radio stations (WPGC, WKYS) in DC where I am from. In DC the black adult contemporary stations would play WHAT IS HE TO YOU. But when the more contemporary black radio stations were even asked to play WHAT IS HE TO YOU as a dedication the reply was "we don't have music like that here".. I am dumbfounded by such a remark by them. I first heard of Me'Shell (as in finally knowing who she actually was) in 1996 summer when LEVITUS:FAGGOT was out. I saw the video on the Box as it was only on MTV during the night and BET never played it. It got called in alot on the Box so I know people liked as much as I did. I also heard her interview and showcasing of PBP on LOVE LINE which in DC plays on a Alneterantive Rock radio station (?). Why was it that this white rock station had no problems playing Me'Shell but the major black radio stations like WPGC and WKYS were reluctant to do so? My thing is to be she is a black artist she needs to be picked up by the black music market. They just stopped playing all together (from the lil they were playing before). I wonder if they think people won't like her but people like that damn Bryan McKnight song! Its interesting how she is in my e-mail signature and everybody on my campus knows I love her music so much that my dorm floor mates got curious about her. I played them some stuff now they really dig her. People know WHO she is around the institute because of me e.g. they are like yeah I liked her STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK SONG :) I guess Me'Shel is the type of artist that has an underground following. I do what I can, but what can I do (I'm extremely tempted to review her next album despite the theme of my site, but I doubt *that* would help much)? Still, she definitely has a strong and loyal following (probably as dedicated, if not as large as someone like TAFKAP's). Does she ever have trouble filling venues when on tour? I doubt it. Hmmm. Whether she intended it or not, by the way, I think her next album is probably going to be a lot more radio (especially Black radio) friendly that _Peace Beyond Passion_. I'm not sure what she could have released from _Peace_ that wouldn't have made someone at some station nervous. By contrast, just from what I've heard her sing last year from the upcoming album, I think she's got at least three tracks that could make regular rotation on VH-1(!). It's up to Maverick. Peace.
