Ron, Having had the honor to expericence the "time when everyone was down with the struggle" it is much more than a romantization of the period... it was a REALITY. It was a time when the struggle meant redifining ourselves for ourselves. We acknowledged one another openly on the college campus as well on the street. Love of one another as well as ourselves was "REAL". In recent history, the only thing that has come close to that was "The Million Man March". Alas, this was only a day. IMHO, "Niggerman" is reflective of the loss of respect our youuth has succumb to. I suppose, it is a "REALITY" as well. Although, a reality a I choose not subscribe to, but somewhere we lost the true meaning of the struggle. We must remember that artists, such as Me'Shell, have the gift to express what is being mirrored by society... granted, it is not always a pretty picture. :( - -michelle aka sundownlady At 08:02 PM 11/11/98 -0500, Ron Littlejohn wrote: > >-----Original Message----- >From: Kareen LORAND >To: god-shiva-digest >Date: Wednesday, November 11, 1998 12:46 PM >Subject: Birthday > > >==would someone tell me what the deal is with me'shell? >in "dig you like an old soul record" whats with everyone being black and >down with the struggle? and hangin in basements with blue lightbulbs? she >sounds like she is romantisizing this period of black culture. hey remember >the good ole days? when we had to sit on the back of the bus? Bryant" Subject: Wendy & Lisa & MeShell... In case you care... Wendy Melvoin & Lisa Coleman (both formerly in Prince's old band "The Revolution") contibute some to MeShell's upcoming cd.(You'll remember Wendy's guitar work on "The Way", "Mary Magdalene", "God Shiva" & "Bittersweet"... just thought you'd like to know... oh yeah, Wendy & Lisa's new cd is out now via internet and in some record stores(like Borders)...I haven't heard it yet, so I can't tell you what to expect...but I'll check it out and let you all know once I do... In an interview, Wendy commented on the year old rumour that Wendy, Lisa, Sheila E, Chaka Khan & Meshell were gonna form a band together. (Would THAT not be the SH**?ttt or WHAT?!!!) Unfortunately she said that the idea had only been talked about a while back, but that's it...Sheila got the "Magic Hour" gig...Wendy & Lisa were working on their thing & doing movie scores(for "Soul Food")...MeShell was touring...ect, ect...so nothing ever came of it....too bad for US if you ask me. I can't IMAGINE what kinds of amazing stuff those ladies could have come up with together. Talk about a SUPER-GROUP!! I love & respect ALL of them individually for their talents...but TOGETHER?? DAMN!!! Too much!! anyway...only in my dreams, i guess, only in my dreams. later folks. Oh wait, one more thing... Anyone remember Teena Marie? Anyone know what she's up to these days? She was a pioneer in her own right back in the late 70's & early 80's. Underated singer/songwriter/musician/producer if you ask me(which you didn't). If you don't remember "Lady T" as she was called, check out her first few cd's (she's put out 9 or 10 that I know of): DEFIINATELY check out "Irons In The Fire", "It Must Be Magic" and "Lady T" ...they are the best 3 in my not so humble opinion. Then if you like those, go ahead and get "Wild & Peacful"(her debut lp), "Robbery" & "Emerald City" (synthesizers started getting a bit too important in those last 2 I mentioned, but it WAS the mid to late 80's after all...still some great stuff on there just the same!) If you dig MeShell, then you'll probably dig those first top 3 Teena cd's as well ("Irons in the Fire", "It Must Be Magic" & "Lady T"). Beautiful, jazzy, soulful, social, introspective, intelligent, emotional, delicate and intensely funky stuff...she collaborated with some great musicians too (Bootsy Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Brandford Marsalis, Stanley Clark, Nathan East, Patrice Rushen, Ernie Watts, Rick James & the Stone City Band...well, you get the picture). Ok, that's my submission to the "suggested listening" corner for today...and if any of you DO decide to check Teena out(assuming you already haven't) let me know what you think. Just curious. alright, alright I'm going... later folks...for real.
