Sounds that way to me, too. Since I'm of the age when that was the FUN time of my life, I related, and enjoyed the feeling her words put me in. For some of us, it was a time when we were still embraced in our mother's home, and with our BEST friends... unaware of credit problems, unaware of needing to plan for the future beyond next Monday... and able to sit back and enjoy. I remember at that time I would often stop, mid-summer, on my front porch. Take a deep breath, and try to 'bottle' the moment. I knew it was good, and it wasn't likely to get better. In fact, at that time of my life, I decided 'It can't get any better than this' When I see friends from that time, I'm happy! REALLY happy. Happier than seeing friends from any other time in my life. I enjoyed it. And it sounds like Me'Shell did, too. Would you have felt better if she would have mentioned watching the Little Rascals and eating Cap'n Crunch after school because you were hungry, but weren't allowed in the kitchen before your mother finished dinner? What about Pixie Stix? Remember those? >I understand >she's talking about communication It's not just communication. It's the whole package. >but baby its so ackward to see her hand >feed this to the white upper middle class college kids who are ironically >the ones diggin on her, yet all she ever really wanted was a NIGGERMAN! If you have issues with her music, why are you here? And if you want to educate, care to listen to the words in her music, and try to see them from where she is coming from, rather than where some one else is going?? I notice you didn't seem to mention the words of 'Souls on Ice'..which surprised me because it spoke against interracial relationships (esp those BM/WF). In fact, there are two albums that she's released already, and there are a good number of other albums that she's been released on Care to discuss the package? Or are you going to do a modern day version of playing records in reverse to find something to complain about? ____ | _ \ | |_) )_ ____ __ | __/ \/ /\ \ / / | | ( () < \ v / |_| \__/\_\ > < / ^ \ /_/ \_\ Apryl apryl@mail-me.com Cats and women will do as they please.... dogs and men should relax and get used to it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 18:35:23 PST From: "Derek S. Derek here. OK...Here's my 2 cents... I think Meshell was just talking about the vibe that was goin' on in the 70's(more so than the 60's)...I don't know how old you are or if you can remember the early to mid 70's or not, but I think she was simply reminiscing about a time when "we" were all just groovin on the same feeling(for the most part anyway). Think about it, the 70's will go down in history as one of, if not THE most creative times for SOUL music. Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Earth Wind & Fire, Minnie Ripperton, Isley Brothers, Sly & the Family Stone, Blue Magic, Barry White, Gladys Knight, Bill Withers, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Parliament/Funkadelic, early Kool & The Gang, James Brown, Donny Hathaway, Roberta Flack("Blue Lights in the Basement" was the title to one of Roberta's best "love/romance" albums and it was being played EVERYWHERE back then), Stevie Wonder, and I could list a zillion more. It WAS a GREAT time for those "soul records"! Plus, rightly or wrongly, there really WAS this feeling in the air that "freedom was at hand"...we had made it out of the turbulent 60's...and there WERE a lot of positive Black organizations and movements popping up everywhere. It was a time, as I recall, when brothers greeted each other with a "what's happening, brother" and a smile more so than any other time that I can remember...at least that was MY experience where I was at the time (in Massachusetts & Connecticut) I think in "Diggin' You" that THAT vibe was what MeShell was picking up on, that's all. That "good feelin' groovy vibe". No, things weren't PERFECT by any means...but there WAS a feeling in the air that, together, anything would be possible. Was she, as you say, "romanticising" that period in black American culture? Maybe a bit. But so what...from what I can remember, it really WAS a romantic and sexy time to be alive. In my life at least, some my fondest memories are of those smoky "blue lit" 70's. What's wrong with a bit of romanticising, anyway? After all the song wasn't about giving us a history lesson, it was about "diggin'" somebody like you dug "Let's Get it On" back in the day, right? It was about "diggin" somebody and getting that good feeling that together, all things were possible, right? That's all. That's my take on it anyway. (Damn, can I ramble on or What?! Sorry 'bout that folks!) Alright, I've had enough of ME as well... Later Ya'll!
