Alfre Woodard gives a powerful performance as a women down on
her luck, plagued with illiteracy, low self esteem and the belief that her
daughter, diagnosed with autism at birth, is a victim of her repeated
use of crack cocaine during her pregnancy. Her guilt and her inability to
be a stable mother, drive her to continue to escape through the end of
a crack pipe. Her victory is in her ability to uproot herself and her
children, return to her ancestral home in the Mississippi Delta, and
discover a self sufficient way of life giving her the strength to want
more of what life has to offer -
especially for her children.
