Others who share this birth date with her: 1920 - Charlie "Bird" (Charles Christopher) Parker is born in Kansas City, Kansas. The jazz saxophonist will become one of the leaders of the bebop movement and be noted for his works "Ko Ko" and "In the Still of the Night," among others. He will receive numerous awards from Downbeat magazine and have the famous jazz club, Birdland, in New York City named in his honor. 1924 - Ruth Jones, "Dinah Washington", is born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She will perform with Lionel Hampton from 1943 to 1946 and become one of the most popular R & B singers of the 1950's and early 1960's. 1958 - Michael Jackson is born in Gary, Indiana. First with the family group the Jackson Five and later as a solo artist, Jackson will be one of pop and Rhythm & Blues' foremost stars. His solo album "Off the Wall" (1979) will sell 7 million copies worldwide, surpassed only by "Thriller", his largest-selling album (also the biggest selling album of all time). Quite a prestigious crowd she's part of! :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SunDown Lady's Ilse of Tranquility A Birthday Celebration in the Cruise Lounge In honor of the Funk Diva Me'Shell http://www.sundownlady.com/flink12.shtml Vote for your favorite Me'Shell album today =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Aug 1998 23:45:35 From: Apryl N Paris Subject: Re: Erika vs Me'Shell At 02:46 PM 8/29/98 EDT, you wrote: >>What I don't understand is: why did Eryka Badu blow up, when >>Me'Shell/Bashir did not? > > >Lyrics. MNO's lyrics are truly more biting, and they also hit at controversial topics.. still... Why not let them BOTH blow up > >Personally, I think Badu's album is overrated. hmmmm.. Maybe.. I love it. But when compared to PL.. I feel a bit of jealousy, and want to say 'overrated.. but in a lot of ways, it's deserving. I just wish I could find ways to get my local radio stations to play more of MNO's stuff. I think I have heard one track per album she's done played ONCE on our most popular station, along with ONE play of her track from Higher Learning. Sad... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pax, Apryl apryl@mail-me.com Always a GIRLFRIEND! They could easily cut a couple rotations of Celine Dion or Puff Daddy to give Erykah and Me'Shell some more exposure. Personally, I loved _Baduizm_. It hit me right upside the head just like PL did when I first heard it. So unique, so intelligent, so thoughtful and entertaining, but still mindful of the great musical traditions that preceded it. Both albums were revelations IMO. I'm so glad for Erykah's commercial success because she's one of the few artistically daring newcomers to be rewarded in this way recently. Fiona Apple and Missy also deserved the attention they got, IMO. But there is a part of me that pities what the masses are missing because radio only plays Me'Shell when she accompanies a mainstream '80s rock star covering a '60s classic. With the fame and success come other pressures, though, and Bashir may just prefer the level of fame she has. - --Michael NP: Lauryn Hill, _The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill_ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 01:05:17 From: Apryl N Paris Subject: RE: Erykah vs Me'Shell At 12:02 AM 8/30/98 -0400, Michael wrote: (thanks for the spelling correction) >I agree with Apryl--there's plenty of room in this world to let all the >talented artists thrive. True.. it's annoying to hear the same songs over and over again.. and so seldom hearing something new. Yes.. there are some who have played Me'Shell once or twice (I did hear 'Outside Your Door' on the radio.. prompting me to buy PL... but dang.. there are so many other tracks..so many other artists... And Eryka gets some of her same songs played over and over again (how many different versions of 'Tyrone' did I get to hear ad nauseum?) As for her lyrics being controversial: they played the heck out of 'If That's Your Boyfriend' for months. I saw that video on the video stations (I *think* MTV, but I'm not sure) That was more controversial than most of the rest, imo.. They play 'Who is He', which is most definitely suggestive of lesbian relationships, as well as bi-sexual relationships. But they *don't* play much of anything else.. Two Lonely Hearts... Dredlocs.. Soul Searching.. the list goes on and on... and then there was that On and On by Badu... but the negligence of much of the rest of her music. Ok.. so long as MNO doesn't get a lot of air time, we can all afford to go and see her, and she still has some sembelence of privacy.. but dang.. I want her to at least be recognized.. even if as a writer, or producer.. musician.. Something ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pax, Apryl apryl@mail-me.com Always a GIRLFRIEND!
