She also added some country artists (Martina McBride) and harder- edged rock artists like Liz Phair (a big fave of mine). I actually think that was a great idea because I think there's way too many boundaries and categorization in music today. I actually linked to an interview w/ Me'Shell off of your site (great site BTW!) and she said something to the same effect, that she wanted her friends in Harlem to be able to listen to "R.E.M., Soundgarden, Tribe Called Quest, Joni Mitchell, and Public Enemy" without worrying what radio category it fit into. From that list, I have to say, Bashir has great taste in music! (But we knew that already ;-) ). <<>> This is where they screwed up--they expanded the diversity of the line-up but kept the same-old diaphanous-skirt touchy-feely fairy marketing. Blecccch. It really made all the added artists *look* like afterthoughts, almost tokens, and also produced a crowd that didn't know what to do with these new artists when they saw them. A friend of mine went to Lilith in DC and said everyone just sat and stared through Missy's performance, which just about made me want to cry. I bet Missy doesn't waste her time shakin' her ass in front of no Lilith audience any more. What a shame--if I'd have been there I would've shaken my booty and kicked a few, too. :-) Hopefully they'll get it right next time. At least Me'Shell's getting exposure to an almost completely new audience... - --Michael NP: The Artist, _Emancipation_, disc three ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Aug 1998 20:25:49 -0700 From: "Miller, John P" Subject: Me'Shell plays Berkeley Thanks to a message from Michael (on another list), I've just joined *this* list... I don't know if this Berkeley date has been mentioned here yet (it's not on her Warner website) so I thought I would pass the word to y'all.... For those of you living in the San Francisco Bay Area, or those who may be visiting the Bay Area mid-September, Me'Shell will be one of three exciting musicians playing the Berkeley Community Theater, Sept 19. This show is a special fund-raising benefit for the "Critical Resistance" Conference & Strategy Session to be held at U.C. Berkeley Sept 25-27... the purpose of the conference is to help identify ways to change our growing reliance on imprisonment as a way to avoid dealing with many of the root causes of social problems. Ani DiFranco, Me'Shell Ndegéocello, & John Trudell will perform at this benefit, hosted by Angela Davis. A special feature of this concert is the opportunity to the artists at a post-show reception. Complete details about the concert, the venue (including maps and public transit info), and information regarding the purchase of tickets for the post-show reception can be found on the BAB_NEWS website at: After arriving at the website, follow the 'ALERT' link, or the 'COMING EVENTS' link for more info. Regular tickets are $26 and have been on sale since Saturday AUG 08, though the show has received little publicity, so good seats are still available. See you there! Why are Latifah, N'dea Davenport, Erykah Badu, & Missy Elliott in the loop also? A true musician can appreciate and respect the talents of others whether or not they are of the same genre of music. Why can't music just be music regardless of where the cd's are placed at the record store? As far as Bashir's type of music, I know she would gladly share the stage with the likes of Rage Against the Machine and James Taylor, neither of which can be categorized as *her* type of music. We must applaud Sarah McLachlan for giving lesser known artists like Bashir the opportunity to perform for an audience that would not hear their music otherwise. As far as the ads go, that's all business. Honestly, you cannot rake in 100,000 ticket buyers in the middle of oklahoma with bashir's name on the top of the bill. First, you need to bring in the people, then expose them to the music. And from what I've seen, Bashir has been performing on the main stage with Sarah, Shawn, Indigo Girls, and Natalie....not on the lesser populated second stage. endora > Can some one tell me why she is looped with the other members of the Lilith > tour? Music is one of the few things that can bring so many diverse people together. The Lilith Fair NEEDS some spicing up with a more eclectic group of musicians. I read somewhere that Paula Cole encouraged Sara McLachlan to bring Black artists into the fold. If that's the case, good work Paula! Nothing but good can come of the new and improved Lilith Fair. When you're a working musician, you want as many people to hear your music as possible. Bashir is still the music industry's best kept secret.
