Yes! Isn't that obvious? :-) Actually, I'm listening to it at work using my desktop speakers (Monsoon :D) and can't really crank it up for a serious listen. Looking forward to listening to it on my home system and letting it rip. Dear Fledglings, Just received my CD (only) .... it was shipped on 2/5 so only took 3 days to arrive. It is signed, so now I remember why I bought it from JB.com instead of the store! Hooray! Satorial comment first: there are some interesting pics in the liner notes. Can some fashionable female please describe the fishnetty outfit, particularly the (tee hee) rear view? It's different. It's 'fishnets and a dress' all in one. Musical comments: Some real gems stand out. The production hand was heavy on a few tracks (I'm sure we'll all debate the pros/cons on this for a while). Jonatha does Rap and when she does, altho probably not intentionally, it sounds quite a lot like Sheryl Crow's Na Na song from TNMC (ah, and the Kevin Gilbert connection rears its head yet again). I'm looking forward to hearing several cuts on AAA radio play; I think Your House will make airplay on KUNC here in Colo. And the strange coincidence: Having never heard "Red Dress" I have been imagining the lyrics to contain a line that would say "put a little red dress on". There are actually two dress songs, and the other, "New Dress" has a line "Baby put this new dress on". How bizarre. Enjoy! >>Mark in Denver - ---------------------------------------------------------- HELP! owner-full-fledged-strangers@smoe.org Send mail to full-fledged-strangers@smoe.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2001 23:26:39 -0800 From: Scott Price Subject: Pulled too far Although I pre-ordered the CD and DVD of "Steady Pull" I only received the CD in today's mail. A note promised the DVD will be delayed a bit. Maybe by the time it gets here I will be a little more accustomed to the new album. It's going to take me a while to feel comfortable with this one. The album begins with "Linger," a bright tune featuring characteristic Jonatha vocals. You know, dotted with all those little nuances she has perfected. Some tasteful piano tracks are overshadowed by a droning electric guitar, which may have been added to affect a more complex arrangement but to me only detracts from this pleasant melody. "How Deep Is Your Love," the next song, is quite a departure from standard Jonatha fare. Underscored with a hip-hop type beat, far-away vocals processed through an echo chamber/reverb unit, and the ever-present electro/techno accompaniment, this is a far far cry from the folk days of "The Story." The next track, "Walking," tries to rely on various studio electronica to maintain a continuity but stumbles throughout. An uninspired vocal track doesn't help either. The album takes a turn for the better about halfway through. "Room in My Heart" is a great song with a fascinating jazzy chordal progression, but the addition of many electronic instrumental layers tosses in a measure of disjointedness. Still, this is good stuff. The title track, "Steady Pull," features brilliant perfectly-on-pitch vocals and is the only song on the CD with a memorable bridge. These bridges are one of Jo's trademarks. Think back to "Because I Told You So." Or the song "10 Cent Wings." Sigh. Now *those* are musical bridges! "New Dress" sets a mood and builds up the drama. The production on this one is much more finely crafted than some of the other songs on this album and it shows. "Digging" is beautiful in its simplicity. The guitar parts are slightly chaotic at times but only add to the overall presentation. This is a fantastic song, given a wonderful treatment. "I'll Take It From Here" is easily my favorite. A gorgeous flowing piece. The producer finally allows the instruments to complement instead of clash and overpower. The balance of Jo's vocals and this "less is more" approach to the arrangement is masterful. Concluding the CD is "Lullaby," a haunting acoustic ballad which is a stark contrast to much of what preceded it. Jonatha expands her artistic horizon with each new album. A lot of my admiration of her music is due to her uncompromising attitude and her quest for growth as a singer and songwriter. It's usually a most pleasant surprise to discover where she has gone each time. With "Steady Pull" I feel the producer has been given too much reign and has relegated her contributions to somewhere further down in the mix. By that I mean the electronica layers have grown too big and detract from the clean yet dissonant and complex presentation that is uniquely Jonatha Brooke. Give me Duke Levine any day for a tasteful accompanist who skillfully augments the songs with neat little riffs instead of banging away with barre chords. Players like him who know their places, and who let Jonatha's talents shine and stand on their own, should be coveted. Well, i'm on my second listen. cool disc. it's is really strange to hear red dress and I'll take it form here after last hearing her play them live almost 2 years ago. For being on the west coast she sure doensn't come to Portland very often. (she used to) I like the new album a lot. so far...I'll grow to love it I'm sure. I still get the chills when I hear her play live, solo. That's where those songs really come to life. I'm looking forward to hearing Your House and Steady Pull when she is in Portland in a couple weeks. The only thing that I'd have to disagree with is the one about Jonatha's control of the overall end product. It seems to me that she is the one steering this one. We all said the same thing with Ten Cent wings. i remember thinking that it was an odd way to go...but her comments brought it all together. She wanted to make a big pop album. I really prefer the disonance and sparce arrangements on Plumb, but I can appreciate the big drum machine groove and disonant guitar of Crumbs...especially when I hear what she does with it live. I'm really into groove, so when I first hear Steady pull...I just, well, I was blown away. If anything, I think that she is right where she ants to be. i get the feeling from the press and interviews that this is the album that she feels is really closest to who she really is. i could be really wrong, but hey, that's okay....if I had my way she would record all of the songs live, and truly solo...one voice, one guitar. That's my favorite stuff...but man, Steady pull.....I'm listening to that track right now, just oozes groove...
