I discovered Plumb in 1996, but it was 10c Wings that took the prize for us, it was a giant step forward in many ways for Jonatha, we still don't know why it didn't make her a big star. I noticed that our ranks include the NPR Webmaster. Did Fresh Air every review 10c Wings? Thats where I first found out about Alanis and some other very cool artists, why not Jonatha, the NPR audience would be perfect for her! Anyway, what is the latest on Jonatha doing a studio CD? Hi, I'm a long time Story, Jonatha, and Jennifer fan, living about an hour from Cleveland. I'm 43, and have a small business repairing, restoring and building furniture in Wooster, Ohio. I have all of the Story and post-Story albums, including the Jennifer demo. I've seen the Story/Jonatha 5 times now, but it's been awhile. She's in my top 5, but I have to tell you all that I worship Joni . I used to make my living as a musician, and find myself gravitating back that way, this time not for income, but for me. I'm working on a small home studio, in the hopes that I can use it as a creative outlet. I'm Michael Abram, a mild-mannered IT consultant by day (available around NYC, see http://www.geocities.com/mickeybtt) and music aficionado by night, not to mention my alter ego Mickey (AKA Zitz Shmecky, see sig below.) Next week I'll be 51. Two semi-interesting personal facts: In 1967 I played 12-string guitar in a band first called Chaos, then Pipe Dreams. Our lead guitarist was a 14-year-old named Jon Gordon, who later played lead for Suzanne Vega and Madonna, among others. Our lead singer was a fellow Stuyvesant HS senior named Walter Becker, who went to Bard College, met a guy named Donald Fagen, and formed a band called Steely Dan. Our bass player is now head of the dialysis department at Beth Israel Hospital. Our best gig together was the senior prom for Bayside HS, where we backed up the Chiffons. In 1977, while an engineer for Electro-Harmonix, I designed a sound effect box called the EchoFlanger, renamed the PolyChorus. It reportedly was Kurt Cobain's favorite effect, and was used by Adrian Belew to get that "Elephant Talk" sound for King Crimson. I also designed a distortion box, lovingly named Deluxe Big Muff Pi by E-H's president, Mike Matthews. How was I fledged? In 1996 I bought Bruce Cockburn's "The Charity of Night" because Ani DiFranco was singing harmony on it, and I got interested in this other back-up singer, so I got 10cW when it came out and was totally blown away - gave it my Best Album of 1997 award. I must have given away a dozen copies to friends and family - an easy task when columbiahouse had it on clearance at $1.99. Sigh. I was fortunate enough to see Jo at Town Hall, and was transported - probably the best concert I've ever seen, and I used to go to the Fillmore East all the time. I've seen her about six times since, most recently at that awful Bowery Ballroom - these old bones need a seat for a show. I met her at Borders, and got to ask "the question" (you know, the one per show) "what was up with that picture on the back cover of Live - did you have a headache?" She replied that she was probably trying to remember a lyric. Hope to be at Fez - say hi please - I'm the old guy with the beard who can't stop grinning for joy. Actually, I'll probably bring some other old guys with me, so I'm not the bald old guy with the beard - still got some hair on top. Don't take it personally. My name is Derek Powell, and although I don't have a neato website like Matthew, I am a year younger so I can boast about that. Of course, being that I live in LA, the smog'll probably kill me first so I guess he wins either way. I first heard Jonatha in Coconuts (a record store) in NYC in 1997. I was working in the video department and ventured upstairs to put some movies on hold to use my discount. (What other reason to work there?) I only heard the strains of a song, and I can't recall exactly what it was, but it was enough to make me hunt down the manager to try to find a copy. Strangely enough, the Jonatha bin was empty, so I snuck back to the closet where they play the CD's and snatched the 10c copy. I took it home and haven't looked back. I, too, was at the Town Hall concert (where Dee Carstensen did Jimi Hendrix on the Harp), and then moved to LA to entrench myself in the fantasy world of acting and modeling. It was the best move I ever made because then I got to see Jonatha three more times in the course of a year. Once at the Roxy with a full band, and Ingrid sporting a bleached-blond do. The next outing, at Largo, six months later, with what seemed a pared-down band. That was an underestimation as Janatha rocked harder than I've ever seen her, and attacked songs old and new with a vivacity heretofore untapped by her. I again saw her at Largo in February of this year with another hard set, though I liked the December show better. But the new songs are killer, I can tell you that--look for a studio album later this spring/early summer. I've got detailed reports of the shows somewhere-- perhaps someone has it archived? Anyhoo, welcome one and all. And for those of you who can actually play a guitar (besides Trey because he's an actor), I've got the tunings for most of her new songs. Later. - --d - ---------------------------------------------------------- HELP! owner-full-fledged-strangers@smoe.org Send mail to full-fledged-strangers@smoe.org ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2000 18:59:59 -0400 From: "Daniel Hulse" Subject: RE: Who's here?
