The venue itself has the world's smallest stage and features 8 or 10 tables right in front where you can eat a meal while you are watching the show. I arrived midway into Emily Wells set and stood near the back with my friend. Apparently Jill met Emily when she was living in Martha's Vineyard a few years ago and Emily was one of the first people she started songwriting with post-Luscious Jackson. Jill passed by me on her way to get some water (I didn't even know she was there) and she said hi and gave me a hug. I moved closer to the stage before Jill's set, however a bunch of tall people moved in front of me as usual but I eventually found a place. I don't' have a set list but it seems similar to the mercury lounge gig with a few lj songs mixed in with the solo stuff. Jill seemed relaxed wearing her Coney Island shirt, jeans and some ballerina type shows. The show did not feature Jill's entire band but only her and Singh Birdsong, both playing acoustic guitars and singing while seated. This set up and the dim lighting and banned flash photography in the venue made for some pretty awful photos, however I did take a couple videos and although the sound is low (new camera) its certainly better than nothing. Jill had a few flubs and even talked about being afraid to forget words since American Idol has come on the air. For a couple of songs Singh's father, Edwin joined them on piano, he is apparently a world-renowned musician and has been sampled on many a rap record, and for another song Emily joined them on violin. Towards the end of the set Jill dedicated a song to Kate who was in the audience and then proceeded to forget the next song and even asked Singh "how does it go again?" and then blamed the mistake on seeing Kate and going into Luscious Jackson mode. For an encore she played New York City Boy again because we wanted more and she had no other songs so she asked what we'd like to hear again and this time Edwin hopped ! on stage mid-song and joined them. After the set my friend and I waited around for a while hoping to thank Jill for the tickets and the show and I wanted to say hi to Kate as well. But I couldn't find Jill and Kate seemed busy and I'm a rather shy person. We waited about 15 minutes and my friend wanted to leave and she was driving so we headed out. I regret not sticking around longer to talk to them, especially when its been so long and its rare for Jill to be out here. Thanks for the info. Wish I could have been there but oh well...I have to realize that since I'm not rich or self-employed I won't be able to make ALL the shows! :) I like when Jill messes up....it's cute and makes it more real. That's cool that Kate was there. How are they going to have an LJ reunion if Kate is in CA? I should have asked Gabby that when I talked to her after the Mercury show. She told me they're trying to put a kids show together too. I think I said that already tho but not sure. She did say that the kids album is already done though which was surprising...no idea when it will come out. Post the pics/vids when you can and I swear I will do mine soon. I need to take a nap tho first. Had to get up and do an interview so I'm drained from putting on my 'a game.' Ha. Oh...question....will The Carson Daly show with Jill air the night she plays or does it come out later? Just wondering so I can get my DVR ready. And yeah...not a fan of his either!! Have a good one everyone!
