The final recordings by Luscious Jackson will be released on the upcoming soundtrack to the animated film "Titan A.E." and the companion album to the WB television drama "Felicity," according to the band's publicists. Song titles for the tracks were not available at press time. and another random thought, it would be a nice gesture to maybe gather up tributes, favorite lj memories, what lj means to me, poems, art, songs, or whatever else and then send them on to the band (if someone could get it to them) as a thank you for the decade of music they've brought us. i'd be happy to coordinate a project like this if anyone else is interested..so, let me know... lindsay i'm escaping...to vinyl shores ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Apr 2000 13:06:56 -0700 (PDT) From: "C.C. Here's the whole Gabby interview, since the link Chuck referred to was outdated. Updated 12:00 PM ET February 10, 2000 By Trinh Bui Daily Bruin U. California-Los Angeles (U-WIRE) LOS ANGELES -- Luscious Jackson was on the verge of making it big. In 1996, the New York quartet's "Fever In Fever Out" album sold more than half a million records on the strength of the catchy "Naked Eye" single. A popular Christmas Gap commercial the following year further cemented the group's underground cool reputation and everything seemed in place for the band to break into the mainstream. But four years later, Luscious Jackson is finding out that underground cool isn't what it used to be. "Things go in phases, and it seems we are in a teen thing phase," said guitarist Gabby Glaser. "And that is where the record labels are pushing because it is doing well. Unfortunately, it makes it harder for other bands. Part of the difference is that in the past they (record labels) weren't as interested in getting a number one record as making a quality record." The dilemma rings true for Luscious Jackson, who will soon launch a U.S. tour with Smashmouth in support of its latest album "Electric Honey." Released last year, "Honey" is Luscious' most accessible album, yet it also combines funky R&B bass, pop melodies and a smorgasbord of samples into a well-crafted urban music kit. Even with glowing reviews, the album has failed to make a dent on the charts. It would be a shame to let "Honey" fall below the radar since it offers a happier and maturer sound than the band's three previous releases. "We were all feeling pretty good when recording the album," said Glaser. "We were all in a pretty good peace of mind. I was in Miami writing songs and that was fantastic. Jill Cuniff (lead vocalist) is getting married and she is happy. I mean anytime you make a record it is going to be a reflection of what you were feeling at the time. We were coming off a tour and had time to breathe and just have fun." It's been awhile since Luscious fans heard the quirky, pop music style of their first album "In search of Manny." Since then, Luscious produced a messy follow-up "Natural Ingredients" before releasing their hit album "Fever In, Fever Out." The production of "Fever" was handed over to Daniel Lanois of U2 fame and the ladies of Jackson ceded control. "Fever" had a distinctly somber undertone, which many attributed to Lanois. Though the album was a big success, Luscious wanted to get back to the eclectic sampling and lyrics of previous records to use on "Honey." So out went Lanois and in came four producers to help the band piece together an offbeat album. "We had quite a heavy hand in producing this record and picking producers," said Glaser. "The opportunity of having different producers makes it easier on the producer because they don't have the responsibility of overseeing the entire album. They can focus on their specific part." "Electric Honey," is the result of this eccentric collaboration. Drum 'n' bass, brassy horns and Debbie Harry - each of these adds a bizarre twist to Luscious Jackson's signature whitewashed funk groove. The soundscape that Luscious peddles to the public grew out of the mid-90s sample and funk movement of Beck and the Beastie Boys, when quality actually got airplay. The survival and appeal of Luscious lie in its roots - the alternative movement that started earlier in the past decade. "We had a great birth of music back then with Nirvana and the Breeders and Hole," Glaser said. "There seemed to be quite a powerful resurgence of music after a questionable period." Like most alternative bands back in the heydays, Luscious Jackson had leeway when producing its albums. The record companies allowed them to grow its sound into what it is presently - something that Glaser feels could not happen if the band started today. "What we did back when we started, people found refreshing and different. I think that was what caught the eye of the people," Glaser said. "We combined a lot of different styles. Now it is a lot more common. I think the way we put the different styles together was unique. I don't know if we could do it now though."
