[Miles Durrie Subject: find-your-mind Re: sad, sad day (LONG, sorry!) Somebody tell me this isn't true. I've spent a day thinking about it, hoping it was an elaborate April Fools trick. It seems that it's not. I also haven't been able to make myself listen to LJ since reading this. The time will come, and I'll play all the albums and smile, but not yet.... Luscious Jackson introduced me to a world of music I would never have discovered otherwise. It was only a year ago that Electric Honey burst upon my consciousness and turned my musical world upside down. No more was I awaiting the next release from Green Day, The Offspring, Foo Fighters or other "modern rock," "alternative" bands ... compared to Luscious Jackson, those bands (whose music I still enjoy) seem aloof, out of touch with life's earthy realities, calculatingly commercial. Instead, I was devouring every LJ recording I could get my hands on. Fever In, Fever Out; Natural Ingredients (my favourite); In Search of Manny and Electric Honey were the soundtrack of 1999 for me. I worked hard at getting to know the members of Luscious Jackson. I read every article I could find on the Internet, checked out all the audio and video clips out there, and subscribed to this list. A musician myself, I dreamed about hanging out with the band, jamming and learning from Gabby and Jill, being constantly amazed by Kate's awesome technique and power. (She's the best musician of the group, from a purely technical standpoint, and one of the best drummers in the business.) Thanks to recommendations from some of you, and my own curiosity, I took off from the Luscious Jackson launching pad into what was, for me, undiscovered musical territory. (I'll always be grateful to Emily for pushing me toward Cibo Matto!) My ears are now tuned into music I might have passed by without a thought before my Luscious Jackson epiphany. My CD collection has diversified even more than before. All my life, people have asked my why I listen to "all these weird bands nobody's ever heard of." Well, those people would be even more disoriented by the range of my music today -- thanks to LJ. In my car right now are about eight CDs, spanning from silly but groovy (a Go-Gos hits compilation) to quirky funk (Cibo Matto's VIVA! La Woman and Stereo Type A); from the now-obscure (the new Smithereens disc) to the critically lauded but ignored by radio in the low-life musical backwater where I live (Moby's Play). But always, it's back to Luscious Jackson, whose music is the sound of life taking place. From the street and the club, to the inner workings of the emotion-wracked mind and the pure sensual joy of love and life, Luscious Jackson let us in on it all -- and with an irresistible groove. No other band has ever known so instinctively and so deeply the meaning of "cool." The quartet, then trio, showed anyone willing to listen how great music can be when it's done without pretension or ego, by musicians who are not so in love with their own virtuosity they forget to groove. Gabby, Jill, Kate, Vivian... What can I say, except thank you? You changed my life, and I love you. The world will be a little bit colder without Luscious Jackson. Miles P.S. If this really IS a prank (which I hope), I still mean every word.
