I'm not sure how it is selling, but I > haven't seen any singles charting I believe Electric Honey topped out at about #210 on the Billboard top 500 chart last summer. Sad, isn't it? But LJ has this undeserved image of being quirky, inaccessible, alt-rock college radio fringe players. Not really sure why -- I guess In Search of Manny was a little aggressive in places and could have put some people off (although it was critically acclaimed), but everything from Natural Ingredients forward has been very marketable -- I think. Here's a question for everyone: What's the typical reaction you get from people when you mention Luscious Jackson? My experience is that most people say something like, "I've heard the name ... is it a person or a band or what? What kind of music?" So the problem isn't that people don't like LJ -- everyone I've lent a CD or tape to ends up loving it. The problem is, as someone said, there's no marketing push from Capitol. Hey, another question: What would you have done to promote Electric Honey? My answer: Heavily pre-promote, release Nervous Breakthrough to top-40 and dance/pop radio about two weeks before the album. Fact is, Nervous is really the only song on EH that totally fits into a radio formula. Ladyfingers? Great song, but who's gonna play it? It's not hard rock, it's not bubblegum pop, it's certainly not country.... Commercial radio is a wasteland. Programmers need to be spoon-fed.
