X-P the dialogue and/or the way they delivered it just seemed a bit cynical. thoughts? by the way, if you saw david bowie performances, a friend of mine was up on stage. her name is emm gryner and she's one of his current touring backup singers. (she had the shiny short dress and scary eyeliner, but she doesn't normally look like that.) they showed closeups of her a few times, so seeing he made me as happy as seeing lj. anyway, she has a website at emmgryner.com so check her out. a bit like sarah mclachlan and sara slean maybe.. well thats all for my shameless emm plug. thanks lindsay ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Nov 1999 15:10:57 EST From: Fumblchick@aol.com Subject: Re: find-your-mind wb radio show... +shameless plug lyndsay, u know emm gryner? she was at lilith this year! she's so cool she came to the fumble rumble in tornto! sent u the money today steph ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Nov 1999 13:09:39 -0800 From: "-" Subject: find-your-mind Forgotten I can't believe I had ticket and forgot to go to Seattle King Cat therater show. This review was written by: Jonathan Brickner (who is having slight technical difficulties in posting to the list) ======== I know this might be late, but here's what I got. Sorry it is so long, but....I liked the show. If you made it to the show, or if you didn't, let me tell you a little about what happened. Maritime Hall is the place and 9:00 was the time. Traditionally, Maritime seems to never stop selling tix to its shows and the place gets stuffed with people. Tonight was not the case and it turned out to be a nice crowd with a great vibe. Ben Lee came on a little after 9:00 and put on a great show. I've heard a lot of people on the group here say he's got a bit to learn and some growing up to do, but I felt he put on a great show. If you were wondering about Ben and his show, he rocked the place with almost a dozen tracks from his Breathing Tornadoes album. He made mention that the next song in the set was a love song, and were there any couples in the audience that would like to come on stage and make out. You know who these people are out there, and sure enough there was a couple that made it to the stage and put on a good show during the song. Ben invited them to stay for the rest of the set and turned out a little necking can land you the best seats in the house. Later in the set, Ben made his way to the floor and sang from the crowd. It was quite magical to see the power and emotion of a musician from 3 feet. It was very cool. It seemed as though Ben was glad to be there and enjoying the vibe from the crowd. LJ hit the stage with a rockin' Pele. For those who are curious, Jill was sporting a tight top with sleeves and a simple floral design on the right side, some dark pants and some sandals. Gabby was decked out in some cargo pants with a shiny silver top. Tia had a red top on (some sort of crew logo on the front, I can't remember) and some black pants. Alex was sporting his short brimmed fishing hat. I talked to him before the show, and this has to be the nicest man in the business. I have talked to him on a few occasions and he is so soft spoken and so....nice. It is always nice to see him in the back making the show happen. Singh was wearing some dark grey button up with 2 thin white stripes running from the front to back. Kate looked her best tonight with a shirt Jill told us she bought while in Vegas. It was black with gold lettering that said 'Las Vegas' across the front with gold stars all over. Let me give the setlist per the setlist from stage: Pele Here bam Electric Lady Love Fantastic Naked Angel Summer Diva Devotion Lie Country Christine Sexy Nervous ************ Surprise City I tell you what. I recorded the show and it turned out alright. I'll have to tell you it is not anywhere NEAR great, but you can still rock out to it. It was my rookie attempt recording it with my mz-r50 minidisc. Let me know if somebody has a need for the tape. That's another thing, I don't have a tape player to dub these minidiscs onto. I'll try to work something out if somebody wants a tape. Also, I went to the Bridge Benefit later that weekend and got Pearl Jam, Brian Wilson, Sheryl Crow and the Smashing Pumpkins on minidisc if anybody was interested. Back to the show. After Pele, Jill talks about some 'cheesy' awards show they were on last night and if anybody watched it on the WB. Nobody said anything, and they all agreed that was a good thing. They cut into Here after that and had the floor dancing. I missed the times when Vivian would do the "Booo, BaBoo" segment in the song, but it still had me shakin'. Bam was next and they had the crowd doing the Go/Stop deal. I think they were impressed by all the noise made by this little crowd. Next is when Gabby made the comment about making a confession while in the City of Love, but then said she can't because it's naughty and dirty. She started into Electric, and I got to say since this is my posting that I LOVE the tracks that are done by Gabby. Whether it's Electric or One Thing or Summer Daze, I like all of them. Matter of fact before the show I asked Gabby if she could do One Thing (it's never on the setlist anymore!!!) and she said it's so depressing and she'd try. Well, I guess the lack of a 'One Thing' following hurt my chances and we didn't see it that night. Maybe if somebody has a boot of Gabby doing One Thing they can set me up? Now Jill introduces the band (Tia and Singh and Alex anyway) and they cut into Ladyfingers. It's such a fabulous track. You all know what I'm talking about. Jill sounded beautiful and seeing her 10 feet from me singing the tune was even more beautiful. I hope you all get a chance to see them. They then strayed from the setlist and sang Love That Is Real. It is a rocker and it had some crazies banging their heads. Next was Fantastic Fabulous. I really dig on this track. It sounds just like the cut on your Electric Honey CD, but you've got the band doing it for you instead of a radio. Naked Eye was after that, and people were dancing, man were they dancing. I heard they didn't play this song at some of the shows, so I was pleased they included it tonight. It seemed to be a longer rendition than on the album and than they've played on TV and at other shows. Jill thanked the crowd, and they then broke into Angel. This is my roommates favorite LJ tune, so I was glad they included it in the list. Next Gabby was talkin and somebody threw something on stage. It landed on Gabby's arm, and it was some underwear. Who knows......about Tom Jones and the show they saw last week with TJ, and said how somebody threw something onstage. They joked that is was her panties and they looked like a table cloth. It was fun. Next song was a highlight, Summer Daze. (A Gabby tune). It is cool to see Jill doing the 'I like it, I like it' part. The song was wonderful!!! Jill asked who was going trick or treating and said she was going with her cousin. Next was Space Diva and I'm not a very big fan of the song. I hate to say that, but that's the way it is I guess. Devotion was after that, and it was very cool. The beginning chords were some heavy guitar riffs from Tia which gave the song a new feel. I still don't know what an underwater frauline is. Jill talked about making an Advertisement. She talked about doing a track with EmmyLou and putting it in A Linda Ronstadt album. She reccommens the ablum if you were curious...... Why Do I Lie was after that, and the crowd seemed very pleased to hear the song. I always enjoyed this song. Jill's voice was wonderful. Can't they just keep going and do the next track on FIFO? I really enjoyed this song. It had me swaying side to side. It had a lot of us swaying side to side. Country 's A Callin' was cool. I'd heard a lot about this song during the tour and it's all that. It starts off with a slow beat from Alex, and the horns slowly come in and Kate starts tapping the drum kit. It slows down, and then they bust into the song. Seeing the girls do the chorus is fun. 'Oooooh I hear a country callin me'. Hope for this one to be in the setlist if you are going to see them soon. Christine followed, and then was Sexy Hypnotist. Before Christine, Jill talks about how she used to love to sing and write songs when she was a teenager, but she was shy and but didn't want anybody to hear her. She said Christine is about a girl or a boy who's a little to shy to play but wants to. Sexy Hypnotist was devoted to spending so much time in Vegas and to the girls who assist the magicians. Last was Nervous Breakthrough, and it was so good!!! It started off with a slow beat, with Jill breathing into the mike, and then a twangy beat came in from Alex I think, and they start into the song. Nervous Breakthrough was the final song in the first set, and what a note to leave on. If there is one song to dance to, it's Nervous Breakthrough. The place was bouncing. I loved this for a closer. Kate busted out during the song with some serious beats. It was great. Tia said "Thank you very much" really fast, and that was it. The encore was started by a GREAT Suprise. This was the best version I've heard. It was heavy with guitar riffs and all sorts of noise. We all did the pogo and with all the bouncing I thought we were going to bust through the floor of this 3rd floor venue. Finally we ended with a LJ tradition and Citysong. Jill invited people up. She said she was going to select people, but it ended up whoever could find their way to the front went up there. It was so crowded. They dedicated the song to their crew, reminded the kids not to step on their pedals, and they were rockin. They said that it was as full as they have ever had it, and to be careful. I think the girls where a little overwhelmed with all the people. It was a great party onstage, and there was some guy who had to stage-dive. The show was an absolute kick. I've seen the girls all over, and this had to be one of my favorites. Please let me know if anybody is looking for anything, I'd love to do what I can for everyone. And sorry this is so long, but I wanted to write down all my thoughts. Thanks for reading!!! ===== ------------------------------ End of find-your-mind-digest V2 #153 ************************************
