I was lucky enough to get a pass to go to the private session, though honestly it was less than I expected. In attendance were Jill, Gabby, Kate and Singh(which I was very happy about). Jill mentioned when we were all allowed inside the studio--a wood paneled studio with the engineering booth to the left behind some glass--that "Yeah, the DJ's not here today." I thought she meant Alex, but later I'd figure out what she meant. Some roadie came out of the booth eventually, and said, "Rolling? Okay...Ladies and gentlemen, Luscious Jackson!" We all cheered and they started off with "Naked Eye." Jill was singing, Singh played guitar(A mic'd acoustic--Jill's black one, I believe), while Gabby and Kate manned the little hand-maracas-thingies(Gabby would later play bass for "Why Do I Lie"). The band was top-notch once again, but the attitude was a little distant. Then some woman walked in and waited untile they were finished "Naked," then rushed to the other side of the stage...It turned out that she was the host DJ from the radio station(her name is Gina or G. Crash, for you extremely vindictive types out there), who was by now about 25 minutes late or more...I was totally disappointed with that EXTREME lack of professionalism and respect on her part, and on top of that she didn't even apologize or anything; she just said, "I thought it was at 3 o'clock, really," and tried to blow it off. I was kind of pissed at her the rest of the time, especially when she tried to make some smalltalk and stuff like that, being all smug, etc. And the worst was that the DJ recorded her intro that she had planned to read before the performance(IF she had been ON TIME, the bitch!) and made us all applaud for her like the little automatons we were. I tell ya, the stuff some people will do for appearances...Moving on...They played some stuff from FIFO and Electric Honey, but it was about half a dozen tunes all together(from what I recall). It was wonderful to hear them again, especially since I had attended the concert the past Saturday and heard them plugged in. Jill, once again, sang beautifully live. "Why Do I Lie?" was particularly moving...call me sappy, but... But I did learn something interesting...The song that Jill co-wrote with/for Emmylou Harris, called "Sweet Spot," will be released on the radio soon, and Jill seemed pleased with that. Maybe it's been released already, and I just haven't heard it, since I don't listen to the radio much anymore. Anybody else hear about this, or have any info? Anyhow, I left there with a bad taste in my mouth because of the shitty way I think they were treated by the DJ. I think that it would have had a different kind of energy if that hadn't colored the performance(though on "Country's a Callin'," Gabby was digging it with rooster crows and sheep bah's and stuff). I've seen them live and plugged in and ready for a show, and I know that was different. - --Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 12:33:02 -0400 (EDT) From: rachel kramer bussel Subject: Magazine appearances There's an article and photos of LJ in the new Nylon magazine (Julia Stiles on the cover) and also in Select with Courtney Love on the cover there's a fashion spread with the girls... :) Rachel "Sexuality is not a frill, and it's not a luxury appearance; it's a part of your life whether you're flush or famished, living under dictators or parliamentarians. Dusty Trails' latest news is that we're signing a record deal as we speak -- we're nearly finished recording an album, a tasteful melange of instrumentals and songs, due for release next February. In the meantime, we aim to get some music on our website, so check it out once in awhile. We also have a track on the Fall CD Sampler put out by Jane Magazine. Titled "They May Call Me A Dreamer," it's one of the first songs we recorded and features Viv on vocals and keyboards, Jo on stand-up bass and guitar, with drums by Kate "LJ" Schellenbach. (Kate played on several songs we recorded for the album, but has now resumed her day job, as it were, with Luscious.) On the subject of playing live, we probably won't play any shows till our record is finished, but when the time comes, expect to see sequins and sparkly bongos... check the website for further information. Love from Jo and Viv P.S. The album Viv is doing with Russell Simins (Blues Explosion) and Rick Lee (Skeleton Key) is nearing completion, and is scheduled for release on Grand Royal in February. - --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ==-- Share what you know.
