[MykePM@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 03 Aug 1999 05:27:45 GMT From: "Tina Bonacci" Subject: finally, it's done Ok, gang.... I finally finished typing up the interview w/Kate and Gabby from last week. Remember how I said that I have an interview with Jill from '97? Well, that's at my parents a house (300 miles away). So, i won't be getting that for another month or so. But, this one is pretty fun to read. I guess it's kind of long. A lot of your questions (those who sent me some) were answered. Enjoy! Tina Bonacci interviews Kate Schellanbach and Gabby Glaser of Luscious Jackson on Saturday, July 24, 1999 at The Vic in Chicago I'll try not to ask you guys dumb questions. Kate. Sometimes dumb questions are more fun. Like, what’s your favorite conditioner? K. Agree. Gabby. Yep, agree. What do you think of capri pants? G. They annoy me a little bit K. They make you legs look like lincoln logs....or loaves of bread. G. They make you look like a whore! K. Actually I have a pair.... G. ....you know who looks good in them? K. Who? G. Debbi Harry. K. She looks good in anything. What do you think of Rick Rubin? K. Funny you should ask b/c we were just talking about him today. i don’t really know him anymore. he didn’t really like the way girls sounded rapping. that was so long ago that i don’t know him now. I'm sure we all changed a lot. Shit went down and that whole situation was difficult. and i ended up leaving the band. b/c he wanted to steer the band in a different direction. obviously it was a very smart move but for me it was hard b/c he sort of influenced my friends in what i found to be a sexist way and i kind of lost my friends. but now they’re back. i mean, we’ve all gone through major changes. I was as much of an asshole too. What’s your favorite Beasties Boys record? G. Mine is check your head. K. I like Paul’s boutique. G. I never listen to that record K. Really? It’s like back when you could sample anything. It’s so brilliantly put together. Chuck’s Question: Now that you’ve been playing w/Blondie and Joan Jett, do you have any plans to play w/any other artists? K. I'd like to play w/Joan Jett again. I'm trying to convince her to do an all female lineup at a Michigan music festival. She’s going to be off tour then. G. I can’t see why she wouldn’t do that K. B/c she’s never played w/just women, and you need women in the band, women crew. I've got everyone for her though....I don’t know. I don’t really have any dream dates....except for Aerosmith. would only have to be particular songs/albums. loxx, draw the line, and toys in the attic....and pump. Definitely would like to be a Blackheart for a night. It’d be soooo cool. Was the production of Electric Honey digital or analog? G. It was mainly digital w/certainly some analog. We recorded most of it w/protools and there was some stuff recorded w/24 track tape machines. K. And eventually the stuff was dumped onto tape for mixing. What about fever? K. It was a little bit of both b/c when we started recording in my house we started recording onto adat. But then we had a little bit of an adat disaster. Adats can be sketchy. G. Yeah, they’re risky. K. The protools thing is great b/c it’s so quick. It’s great. I’ve read that on this record you split up while recording. Is that true? G. Pretty much. We haven’t always worked like that. The last record was more of a jamming record. And then the second record, Natural Ingredients, had all the members putting together all the elements as well as Jill and I together. This one was kind of separate. Like , here’s Jill day, here’s gabby day and then we’d have continuity b/c tony m did a lot of the tracks. And the other producers did as well. Do you like having a lot of producers? G. Yeah, it was fun. I think that after the experience of fever where you had someone who was incredible at what he did and also a really cool person it still the fact that it’s kind of like a blind date and that you’re doing something very intimate w/someone you don’t know that well. With this we know Tony [Mangurian] really well and we feel a lot more at ease w/getting our ideas across. And you know what you want K. Yeah, and you’re not having one person in charge of all the songs. Maybe they’ll write for a couple of the songs. I can definitely see that some songs worked well w/Mickey but I don’t know that I would want him to do everything. G. Yeah, and at the same thing when you have one person doing the whole record. They’re going to have certain songs that they’re going to pick and put a lot of love into and others won’t. K. We had a lot of love on every song. So, it was good. G. It’s ideal. K. In fact it made the guys kind of step up b/c they were kind of competing w/each other. G. You know, you’re absolutely right. And I would think that it would help when you all step in help to produce it yourselves. G. Oh yeah, we had as much say in the sound if not more. We know how we want it. We’ve been doing this for 9 years so we know how we like our sound to be. We have our effects pedals and so on. Is that weird to think that you’ve been doing this for 9 years.....do you ever stop and think "Holy shit, I'm famous"? G. I don’t think any of us think of ourselves as famous. K. I can’t believe I've been drumming for 20 years. i feel old. longer than Bijou has been alive. How old are you? I'm 22 but i look like I'm 18. K. No, you look like you can be anything. G. You’re 22? you know there’s a flaming lips song called "22" ** sings ** I just saw them play the other night G. You did? They just played here? I'm so jealous. Yeah, they played w/Robyn Hitchcock, and Sebadoh. G. How was it? It was fun. They’re so goofy G. The lips? Yeah. They’re great though. I had no idea they were so goofy. G. They’re so great, and funny, and amazing. I love those guys like brothers. They’re the best. We toured w/those guys on lollapalooza and we had the best time. They restored my faith in music. They had a video behind them of the drummer playing instead of the actual drummer. G. We should get that for Kate. Why don’t you guys play stuff from your first album? K. We’re working on that today at sound check. G. How did you know that we don’t play that stuff? B/c I've seen you enough K. It’s on the internet too. G. We haven’t had time to practice. ***Tia comes in and leaves**** K. We had 3 weeks to rehearse for this tour so we were trying to nail the new stuff. It was taking a long time to do. We wanted to work on a medley of old stuff but we literally ran out of time. And we thought "Oh we’ll do it on tour". But this is our second show and we haven’t had time. G. We pulled out Kaos today though. K. We’re going to try and do Leisure G. Keep on rockin' it K. A lot of people love that record Oh, it’s so many people’s favorites G. Yeah, and it’s so funny that we don’t play it, ever. K. It’s in the works. It’s just a matter of getting time to practice the songs. And like I said, Lilith, no sound checks. And that’s the only time you get to figure out stuff. but now we have 2 hour sound checks. Is Lilith better this year or last year? G. It was mind blowing this year. It was so much fun. Shit, if you get a chance to go... K. Sheyrl crow rocks the house. Is she cool? G. She’s So cool, and she’s such a bad ass. She’s got a beautiful voice and she can play almost anything. It’s funny b/c when she started, she didn’t claim to play as much as much as she does now. But she’s been rocking out. K. She kicks so much ass. She plays everything......bass, guitar, accordion, piano, harmonica, and she sings like nobody’s business. The band is great. G. The band is so great. When you watch them every night you kind of realize how great the songs are, how greatly constructed they are. Which is like "Wow, this song is so good from beginning to end and it doesn’t get boring." She’s a good producer too K. Hell yeah, we talked to her about doing something in the future. When is everybody’s birthday? G. Guess....guess everyone’s sign. I think that I heard that yours is in December. G. Maybe, guess my sign. I don’t know, see I don’t know signs. G. Oh, Sagittarius. What are you? A Gemini right? Nope, I’m a Libra G. Oh K. Gemini? G. Yeah, I think you physically look like a Gemini. Your face looks like a Gemini. Vivian’s a Gemini K. I’m Capricorn. G. Jill’s a Leo. Singers are leos. What is her date? G. August 17. K. Mine’s January 5. Vivian’s is 24 of May. *** then we try and figure out the order of the signs, it takes a while *** K. I don’t know any Tauruses G. You went out w/a Taurus K. Did not. G. * laughs * Yes you did. K. No. G. I know all the signs of my friend’s ex-boyfriends and girlfriends. Really? G. Yep, they don’t even know them. K. I dated a Taurus for like a minute. G. But I remember it. K. I don’t know her anymore. G. Kate’s a heartbreaker. Is she? G. Yes. K. No I’m not. G. She used to be. K. I’ve got my heart broken Plenty of times. G. Anyway. What’s the crowd’s response to the new stuff? G. They boo and they hiss. K. They pee on things. G. No, it’s been really good. We’ve been playing about three-fourths of the new album and things have gone over really well. Sometimes it’s tough to play new stuff Because people that don’t know it don’t want to hear it? G. No, people are into it but I think that we kind of underestimate the audience. In the beginning we did some Europe shows when the record wasn’t even out and I think we just played so much new stuff that it was like "Wait a second you guys we have to play some new stuff too" B/c if people don’t know the music.....I mean I know that if I see a show and the band is not playing older songs that I love so much I'm pissed. We’ve been trying to balance it out between the four albums and the shows have been going real well. K. And it’s also really funny to play new songs and then have people singing along to it. G. That happened last year on Lilith Fair. K. * yawns * You guys seem tired K. We are sleepy. G. I want to see later on if there’s a cappuccino joint. K. Wait, I want to see the other questions you have. From Robert in Jamesport How can we repay you for the great music you’ve given us? K. Hand massages. G. Come to our shows and act sooo excited. K. Dance a lot. G. Yes, dance a lot and then scream "I love you Kate!" You used to bring people up on the stage. Do you do that anymore? G. I miss that. Keep on rockin' it, we should do that. K. Sometimes as long as we feel that there can be control. Now we pick up less people b/c it gets a little hectic. G. Well we pick others a lot, like Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan now *** I banter over the questions *** K. I want to know the ones you didn’t want to ask. Actually, I deleted some. Oh, here’s a Kostars one. Have you heard Sixpence None the Richer’s song "Kiss Me"? K. I heard that it sounds like "Red Umbrella". I told Jill that and she said she’ll have to listen to it. G. They were on Lilith too. I’m not too familiar w/the part of the song that they’re talking about. K. It’s the beginning *** sings *** G. You know what it’s just a common chord progression. K. Very common. G. I used to do a song during soundcheck years ago. K. There’s just so many ways you can put together those eight notes. There’s a lot of bands that use that progression. G. It’s a D to a D-sustained....it’s just a common, easy listening, ‘60’s chord progression. That’s what it is. K. Kostars in itself was a very derivative band anyway. The charm is that the sound was so familiar. They’re never going to do anything else again will they? K. Never say never. Viv’s doing her own thing which a sort of kind of Kostars. Some great stuff, dusty trails. G. Dusty trails. K. Josephine Wiggs from the Breeders and her. I’m sure that she’s kind of filling that Kostars void. I’ve heard the music is kind of trippy and soundtrackish K. There’s soundtracky stuff in it and there’s songs that are definitely Kostars-esque. Wouldn’t you say? G. Yeah, and you know Vivian’s voice is really beautiful. We saw them play at the Mercury Lounge and she has a really strong voice which you never really could tell when you’re doing back-ups for Luscious Jackson. It’s great for her to just come out and sing. I love the way her and Jo kind of have this casual banter on stage. K. Josephine’s hilarious. G. Oh Josephine is so funny K. And i think it loosens Vivian up too when she’s on stage. And I play drums for it too. G. And Kate was there as well. K. I was there watching and playing drums, but then I quit or they fired me b/c i was in Luscious Jackson. G. Because you were torn Have Tia or Alex ever K. -had sex? No. Have they been offered K. - money for sex? No, other jobs? K. Full time jobs away from us? Jobs w/the band. K. I think we feel like the three of us are really the core. Alex has been w/us since ‘94 and he’s had a big hand in the sounds of particular songs. Naked Eye’s sampling. And also the live shows, they’re indispensable. They also have their own interest and careers and it may be that they might want to do something else. G. They have their own music that they make too and there might come a time when they might get to really get it going and they’ll leave us and stuff and you can’t blame them. For now they seem happy but you know you want to have your own thing too. But, you know when you have too many cooks in the kitchen man, it just sucks. That’s how I felt on the last record. I had to step back a lot b/c certain people come forward, certain people come more forward and there they are...someone’s gotta step back. You can’t all be shovin your ass in there to get on the record. So someone’s gotta give. K. In a way, the three of us...it’s very streamlined. It’s figuring out schedules and all this stuff. It’s a lot easier b/c it’s one less person, nothing specifically against Vivian. G. No, if I was gone it’d be the same thing. K. It’s just easier to come to decisions. G. Especially making the record, it really helps. Really? G. Maybe that sounds weird. I don’t know. The band started w/2 people and there was no need to keep everyone happy and stuff. And then when you get together a drummer doing their job as drumming... then you get someone else who’s creative like Vivian who really needs to be creative... b/c she is. And that’s when it gets to ok, well we have to satisfy everyone else too. K. An interesting band that’s very unique is Fleetwood Mac where you have like, four people writing songs and that means each person has two songs per album every two years. You spend two years of your life and you only get two new songs. So, it becomes difficult. G. Yeah, and like we said, if one person left it would still make it easier. It doesn’t matter who leaves. And i think Vivian has so much freedom now that she’s w/Jo. It’s like the way it was w/the Kostars. It’s like me and Jill in the beginning. We could play everything. We could play a little keys, a little percussion, programming, guitar. Except for Kate always being the drummer, the rest of us were really pretty interchangeable. K. But now you have to learn how to play drums. G. I have to learn. You’ve been playing? G. I love playing drums. In our early days, Kate used to come out, which would thrill the audience, for two songs and she played bass. And then I’d go back on the drums and feel so happy being by the drum set b/c A) it’s so fun to play drums and B)you’re not up there, you know, being up there. * laughs * K. Those are the pre-Manny songs that very few people heard. G. We should put our pre-Manny songs out someday. K. We should. G. * sings something * I like Radiating. K. That’s a good one. You know what, we forget how to play our songs. It’s weird. What’s another question? Do you want to read them? K. Yeah. * takes papers and skims questions * "When are you coming to Rochester?" Probably not for long. "Who came up w/the title ‘Electric Honey’ and why?" Gabby b/c...she’s like that. Did you know that there’s an anti-Luscious Jackson website? K. Yeeeahh! G. Yeah? Oh my god, have you seen it? What does it say? K. It’s really mean. They’re mad that you’re wearing makeup. They’re like... "Kate’s wearing makeup" K. What-ever. Do you see make up on my face? G. What else are they saying? K. It’s mean, let’s not get into it. It’s stupid. K. You reach a different level of fame when you have a someone spending that much of an amount of energy slagging you off. It seems like somebody’s got some... G. Problems. It seems personal. K. Yeah, it’s some personal thing. Like, somebody must have rubbed them the wrong way. Don’t you think? Yeah. Well, I saw it and read the twenty things and noticed they were just getting really repetitive and dumb. G. What’s the main thing? They just think that you guys sold out to pop and blah, blah, blah. K. And these are all the reasons why we suck....because we’re on Grand Royal....all the bands on Grand Royal suck. G. It’s so easy to criticize....that color blue would be so much better if it were a little brighter. K. Because I wear make-up....that’s a good reason to say a band sucks. Meanwhile, if they’re into someone else, why don’t they do a website for them? It’s really bizarre. G. Where do you find it? I kind of want to look at it. I’m not sure, it got forwarded to me. You know, about the pop thing, I was just talking w/my friend about this album. The reviews are weird b/c they’re all about dissecting the album into two parts and saying it’s all poppy. But I don’t really see it as that. I think it’s just a progression of talent. G. I mean, we don’t really give a fuck what people think, to be honest K. Yeah, and we never shy away from pop b/c pop is definitely a love of ours. We were pop from the beginning so we just got a little bit better at it. G. Yeah, Life of Leisure is pop. Let yourself get down is pop. Satellite’s pop. Plus, we have better equipment now too and that makes things sound different. K. Plus, there’s a lot of band where I like the first two records and then I kind of got sick of the sound. And everyone changes. As you grow, your tastes change. It’s nice to have a career. It’s like for us, we’re lucky. We’ve got these four things....and some bands only get two. G. And we’re happy w/the way the record came out. I mean, you’re not always happy w/the way things came out but I think we’re all pretty happy about it and fuck anybody if they can’t take a joke. K. Alright here’s an equipment question: "Aside from the Reed, and Fernandez, and Mustang basses, what guitars do you play on Electric Honey?" G. Now what does that say again? K. What kind of guitar is your purple Gibson? G. That purple Gibson is The Paul. It’s like a Les Paul but it’s smaller for my little puny fingers. And there’s a song on the record called "Fly" which I use a Gretch, a whammy. That’s how that song was written, playing on a whammy. K. "After your shows w/Cibo Matto, will tour anymore for Electric Honey?" Yes. We’ll be touring a lot for this record, hopefully. Depends on how successful it is. "What act on Lilith did you most like to play with?" G. Ok, the act on Lilith, as we just said, is Sheryl. Sher-all! K. Who else did we like? Pretenders. G. Pretenders are amazing. K. Cibo Matto. Beth Orton. Bijou Phillips was fun. She’s got a great voice. G. Beth Orton is such a cool girl. She’s so warm. K. And Sarah is great of course. I miss Shawn Colvin, totally. "Who was the most fun backstage at Lilith?" Me. G. Kate was the most fun. K. "What act did you enjoy watching the most?" Me. "Will Jill and Gabby ever write together again, like in the old days?" G. Maybe, hope so. K. Oh, Sara said "Hi". Hi Sara. Other side of the paper, hang on. G. How did you get all these questions? I joined the list serve from Sara’s page and so I asked them to send me questions. K. "When Jill plays bass does she use her fingers or a pick?" G. She’s a finger girl. She’s got ladyfingers. K. She’s got ladyfingers. G. I got ladypick, she’s got ladyfingers. K. "What method do you recommend when starting to play an instrument?" G. My recommendation when starting out to play any instrument is to play along w/your favorite records. Is that what you used to do? G. I never did it but when we were making this record, after we would be done, or even before sometimes, me and Tony M would put on this Stones compilation w/a bunch of great songs from the 60’s and 70’s. We stopped at the early 80’s. And I played drums and sang and he played guitar and sang and we’d have So much fun. Better than sex. K. Hey, "If you had to pick three songs you’d like to see Luscious Jackson cover, what you pick?" She’s got a whole notebook full of songs. G. I do, but some are so mellow. K. What about one of those crazy Blondie songs you were doing last night? G. Yeah, exactly. Kate could act out Plastic Layers, the Blondie record, and I swear to god, if she went to Vegas w/this act she would make so much money doing this. It is a riot! K. Gabby’s my biggest fan. G. You don’t even know how funny this is. All you need is her on a stage w/a spotlight acting out the whole thing. She acts the drum parts and the keyboard parts. And the singing is too funny. It’s too fucking funny. We need to see this. K. Gabby’s always complaining that we haven’t recorded any of this and I finally bought a video camera and we haven’t been using it. What we need is a hidden camera on the bus. It can just run all the time. There’s too many crazy times. G. Also, Lilith was a little too exciting. We didn’t really get footage of photos from that. Bonnie Raitt was going nuts. Did I tell you what she said to Sheryl Crow? K. No. G. Ok, now here’s something funny. K. Is it the tit thing? G. The tit thing, yeah. Sheryl Crow said to me "You know what Bonnie said about you? She told you right?" I said no. She said, "Kate’s so lucky she gets to groove with her breasts to the music" Which she does. Maybe Bonnie wishes she could do the same. G. I don’t know. Then Bonnie Raitt said to me about Sheryl Crow when we were all together "All I could think about is what great teeth she has." So I told Sheryl that and she goes "Really? She’s obsessed w/body parts." Because then she told me that Sarah McLachlan’s nose moves up and down when she talks. K. Which it does. G. And cute it was. Bonnie’s all about the body parts. K. Bonnie’s wild. She’s a rock and roll chick. I think she’s a good addition to lineup. She gets up on stage and just kicks ass. K. Oh my god, we saw one show....her last show was our first show and we watched that and I was like in tears. When she did "I can’t make you love me" I was look ‘boo hooo’. It was so great. She’s killer. *** Then, we pretty much wrapped things up. We walked out of the place and began the search for cappuccinos. Needless to say, I had a blast w/them. Kate and Gabby made me feel really comfortable.....plus, I learned a lot. Totally cool experience. Thanks again to all that sent me questions...I hope they got answered. They ARE playing "Love That's Real Suite" on this tour. It's too bad they haven't been doing "Love is Here" though, because that's a great song, too. There's an archived real audio presentation of the Toronto show (including "Love That's Real Suite") on the web at: "http://www.virtuallycanadian.com/Shows/PrimeTicket/LusciousJackson".
