If you don't believe me, you can always go check it out for yourselves. http://www.sonicnet.com/artists/ai_singlestory.jhtml?id=515630&ai_id=755 And i suggest you listen to the Real Audio interview excerpt that goes along with it (Gabby sings the original Mangina tune in there for about 5 seconds). Carlino" Subject: new album/tour/etc On one hand, I want the new album to do really well, but on the other, I'm selfish, because I know that will mean larger venues, more little kids at shows, etc. I *really* enjoyed seeing LJ at the TLA, which is a smaller venue, and it's inevitable that bigger and better things are in store. I guess at my age (33... 34 in Aug. -- I'm actually the same age as all 3 LJ members), I no longer enjoy the big venue thing. Club shows are so much more fun. Do you think it's the end of an era? The one and only time I saw LJ(definitely not the only time forever...) was at a big May concert-festival in Maryland, called the HFStival, a few years ago. FIFO had been released earlier that year(or was it the fall of the previous year?), and they played a bunch of songs from that--naked eye, Under Your Skin(my favorite!), and more. And a few times the band had to stop because the crowd was getting a bit rambunctious; I recall Jill saying "Settle down, boys," obviously referring to the various drunken frat boys that were picking fights in the front area(mind you, I was about forty feet from the stage and about as close as you could get without being nearly crushed). Meanwhile, I'll be seeing them in a club in August, I'll be just as far away(if not closer) and I'll be able to hear them without being crammed together with a bunch of drunk and high people. Gosh, maybe I'll be able to enjoy a drink or something without risking the chance I might be wearing it. As you can tell, I'm not the type to enjoy big concerts. And I'm not one to say that LJ can't fill a stadium--the whole place was grooving, I assure you--or should play only clubs. But being at home, able to listen to their music in a relaxed setting, or being able to sit only a dozen feet away from the musician without risking your life by just being there, is more to my liking. And a lot of the craft in LJ doesn't translate to me when I'm stuck in a mosh pit with a bunch of sweating middle-schoolers. Man, I can't wait to see them in the Recher Theatre in August. Just my 2 cents. - --Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Jul 1999 12:53:29 -0800 From: "C.A. Carlino" Subject: don't get me wrong... Sometimes, large festival-type shows are cool, but I'll tell you this... The last place on Earth I want to be on a big holiday like July 4 is Central Park -- and I'm *from* NYC! That's all I need -- someone pulling out a gun, like the two idiots who did that at the 4th of July fireworks show I was at appx. 10 years ago (my *last* 4th in the City). Alright, I've been delaying my commentary on Electric Honey, but here we go... I wanted to start off by saying that I don't find EH "boring" -- for me, that was FIFO. I also feel that the first "half" of the album feel a little more solid than the latter "half." Don't know why (perhaps I'll feel differently after more listens). And Gabby's songs are a breath of fresh air, especially "Summer Daze." For me, this album is tie at #2 as fave LJ LP...It's tie with NI. And, of course, Manny is STILL #1. At least EH possesses some Manny elements i.e. a very New York street-wise sound, not to mention equal songwriting credits between Cunniff and Glaser. I also appreciate the band's experiementation; some of it may take a bit getting used to, but didn't folks say that about The Beatles when they released Rubber Soul (or Revolver)? I can tell that the ladies have been listening to an array of musical styles...I wonder SPECIFICALLY what they've been listening to to influence the style(s) found on EH. The album's packaging is great -- but I, too, wanted to see those kid pix even bigger. And the ladies are STILL lookin' mighty sexy. Gabby is a babe. Perhaps this album WON'T make the band goddesses with the critics, but who gives a shit. I think it does, however, cement the "goddess" role LJ holds for all of us. Oh, and I agree with Chuck: I want to see LJ do a fans-only CD of cover songs. We did this once before, but what songs should the band do?? I have my ideas, but I'll wait for other responses first. Hello, Sometimes peoples ideas about others artistic development drives me crazy. Luscious Jackson are creating incredible music and all the comparisons to the old stuff is pretty much useless negativity. Some incredible artists only get one chance, LJ keep on forging ahead...... For the crucial love I feel for LJ's art, it seems strange that people would want only the same production or only small venues..... Every LJ album takes me someplace new, somewhere special..... Luscious Jackson will forever change and if your not into it, respect others, keep it to yourself and move on......... While all your fantasies of LJ playing at your nursing home will keep your status quo, I think I'll take my friends to Central Park and fill my ears with SUCCESS!!!!!!!! jen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 00:33:48 GMT From: Kate Y Subject: random LJ stuff... HI everyone! Chuck: I was wondering who that guy was too and if it was all the same person or not. Kind of funny. haha Mike: I was also wondering what he said his name was too in Life of Leisure. Sounds like "Robobot" so that's what I always say....hahaha. I'm sure I'm very wrong though. :) Can't remember who posted it....about Mangina. That was a cool article and nice sound bites. Thanks for posting. It was pretty funny. Too bad she didn't do the song like she wanted to in the first place. That would have been funny. haha I'm mad about that double disk thing for EH. I didn't see that and don't think they're doing that at the stores around here. Who knows....I'll have to look around more or ask. Or just try and get the Ladyfingers single with the remixes some other way. Who knows at this point....I'm just trying to figure out my travel plans for this weekend. If anyone is going to the Long Island or NYC show then I would love to meet up...I'll be at both so let me or the list know. That would be cool.
