Of course this would be the morning the employees start leisurely unlocking the doors at almost 9:15, then have no computers "up" yet. I was over 40 minutes late for work, but we all have our priorities. At least I got a chance to flip through the booklet this morning. I wasn't expecting baby pictures! That's so cool! Based on one listen, the tracks jumping out at me are Nervous Breakthrough (great party/dance tune), Fantastic Fabulous (just plain rocks), and Country's A Callin, which just reaffirms my belief that Gabby does the laid back/chill vocal thing better than almost anyone. I'm sure EH will be on repeat in my CD player for awhile. Thanks to this timely mailing list, I was able to catch the airing of the MTV clip. It's always fun to see bands you like so much right there on your TV screen actually speaking. Quick question: John Norris pronounced Jill's last name as cunNIFF, but I've always said it with the accent on the first syllable, CUNNiff. Does anyone know which pronunciation Ms. Cunniff herself prefers? "I got ladyfingers baby I got KEEBLERS baby I got heart" Okay, okay...I misheard, but it was truly an honest mistake...What the hell are "kidgloves" anyway...I like singing about elves better, but then again, maybe that's just me. I too procured my copy of Electric Honey at the evil Virgin Megastore (only this one is at the Block in Orange (california, if you wondered)...I swore I'd never buy anything from them because they yelled at me two months ago for sitting on the floor and looking at a book...poo...) So anyway, I bought the CD and I was all excited and stuff, but I bought it before I went to a movie (An Ideal Husband...'twas all right if anyone cares), so I had to wait approximately two hours before my first listen. Yeah, so I listened to it when I got home...well, I started to listen and then I started to skim because I became BORED. Yes, bored! An LJ album bored me....Are you sad? I am. :-( I'm realizing (with my one not so in depth listening) that I miss Vivian...I always sang along with her nice little harmonies and made noises for the sounds which emitted from her keyboards. Sad. Just Sad. I kinda liked Devotion and Lover's Moon. Those were quite pleasant, as well as, Sexy Hypnotist...just typing that makes me laugh. I think this album has kind of a space theme...I'm not sure Electric Honey was the best name...I wonder what some other titles were...that would be a good question to ask...quick! Someone get me an interview. You know, I don't write to the list often, but when I do, I feel I've sufficiently made up for all the time I was quiet. I hope you feel the same ;-) I know someone wants to give me a poster - -Sara(h) visit my world at IF YOU DARE! heheee... what's this about a free CD? Maybe that'll give her the confidence to write more. Overall, I find that the so-so reviews are from magazines/papers I really don't respect anyway...you know, the onces that maybe (and I stress the word MAYBE) listen to a record once and then hastily comment. At least this review was by a musician. Just wanted to say that I agree with your comments Star. I like the mix on this album....a lot of variety. I really like Alien Lover, Summer Daze, Devotion, and Fantastic Fabulous for their energy and that "get up and dance" feel...Sexy Hypnotist and Ladyfingers I guess could fit in this category too. It's hard to say with their songs. heheheheh. Beloved and Lover's Moon are great ballad type love songs. Jill does sound great on this album and I love the songs where she "screams" the chorus out. haha. Summer Daze is definitley my favorite Gabby song to date. I love the energy...sort of reminds me of INXS because of the guitar. The words have a lot of meaning to me too at this point in my love life. :) The only thing that annoys me though is the CD insert...the pics need to be bigger and they need to put all the words to the songs. Some of them only have the first verse or so (seems like they're all the Gabby songs...coincedence or no?) :) and it annoys me cause I have to figure them out by ear. heheheh In conclusion...I noticed that on MTV too Amy and thought he pronounced it wrong. I remember wondering when I first learned Jill's last name way back but had figured it was CUNNiff like you did...it just sounds funny the other way. haha. Anyone know for sure?? I think the MTV guy messed it up...he messed up a few times. Looks like he didn't practice the teleprompter script before-hand. heheheheh. And it was funny to hear Kate talk about the Ladyfingers video. I thought it was computer-generated too when they were in the park. It looks too good to be true...the colors are so bright and stuff it looks a little fake. haha. Glad I know now though! I want to go there. And that was a good review Chuck...thanks for posting it. OK....that's enough for now. Have a great day! ~~Kate~~ _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. All the songs are wonderful when taken individually, but put together in an album it sounds chaotic to me. I think what I'm trying to say is that I like the songs, but I don't fancy the flow of the album. I think FIFO had the best flow. The songs had a logical progression and built a powerful atmosphere. EH sounds more like a collection of singles to me, because the songwriting is so strong. It's got punch but lacks direction IMHO. But who am I to criticize... Valid point about lack of full-band stuff. As much as I love Electric Honey (Remember my gushing review?), I really *do* like when Jill, Gabby & Kate just bash it out on bass, guitar & drums. (examples: Surprise, Satellite, Mood Swing, One Thing) I guess that's why some of my favorite songs on this album are "Country's A Callin" (It's like old-school LJ), "Sexy Hypnotist," and "Devotion." Also, what happened to D.J. Alex on this album? I didn't hear any of his specialties. Yeah, I do agree with what Marie said. The songs are good but there's a lot of variety which is good in one sense but definitely disrupts the flow that I think all the previous albums possessed...especially FIFO. I like the album cause it's LJ, of course, but Natural Ingredients is still my fave. And someone also mentioned the "space theme" in EH. I agree that there is one and think it's cool...goes well with all the futuristic/Sci-Fi stuff lately and of course the upcoming millenium that everyone is freaking out about. haha And thanks Chuck for the info. You're probably right about the name if you heard her say it. Wow...that's weird...it will take me awhile to get used to saying it the right way now. haha. Love, Kate :) PS: Why are my sentences coming out all scattered in the list? They don't look like that when I compose them...hmmm... Also, has anyone figured out any bass tabs yet? All I know is Ladyfingers now, but still have to type it out for Sara's site. And I didn't get the free Ladyfingers CD with EH. :( Is it just the single like the promo one? I have that. Or does it have remixes? Just curious. OK....BYE!!! _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I don't always put a lot of weight into what critics say, because I suspect they don't give albums enough of a listen before shooting their "mouths" off. Some of my favorite albums of all time are ones that I was lukewarm on after a couple of listens - and that includes "Fever In Fever Out". I'm going through the same thing with "Electric Honey", too. The first couple of times I heard it, some songs jumped out at me (like Ladyfingers and Devotion), but I was a little bummed about it as a whole. It seemed like a lot of the urban attitude that I liked about their stuff had been replaced with sort of a "contemporary jazz" type happy vibe that I wasn't so keen on. But the more I listen to these songs (like "Summer Daze"), the more they grow on me. I just don't think critics give albums the kind of attention that I'm giving EH. Oh, and the second half of the album is just fine ("I hear the country callin' me..."). And Lover's Moon IS Kostars. - -Mike ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 11:13:14 -0800 From: "C.A. Carlino" Subject: what do you all think about this? Well if you're gonna buy just one LJ album, get Manny. But of course nobody's gonna get just one of their albums, right!? I haven't made up my mind regarding Electric Honey. Ladyfingers (refrigerator box remix) - remixed by DJ Wally 3. Ladyfingers (bd's smooth finger remix) - remixed by Buffalo Daughter 4. Gridlock (previously unreleased) - a Gabby song So now I have two EHs and supposedly my autographed copy from Grand Royal is on its way too.
