Carlino" Subject: LJ mentions at Cafe Utne...... Hi all. Hope everyone is getting pumped up about Electric Honey. What an awesome album it is too. (Don't listen to "Launch" or "Rolling Stone" --- those suckrags.) Anyway, I participate in a Laura Nyro discussion group over at Cafe Utne (http://cafe.utne.com). Recently, while going through some archives, I found two mentions of LJ. I thought that some of you might be interested in what these people had to say about them (LJ) within the context of another musician's discussion group. ******************************************************************* Music.122.385: Laura Bambusch (bluelaura) Mon, 01 Dec 1997 18:34:08 CST (20 lines) I've been away for a few days. It's always exciting to return and read all the new posts. I want to add that my daughter, age 14, enjoys all of my Laura Nyro cds. She plays piano and sings, and is understandably impressed by Laura's incredible vocal range and melodies. Like Warren, who posted earlier, I don't shield my daughter from sex and drugs as depicted in any kind of artistic endeavors, and also like Warren, I was brought up a Quaker! What a shocker, most people expect the Quakers to be conservative in such matters. Speaking of artists who acknowledge Laura's influence on their own music, my daughter tells me that a group of young women who call themselves "Luscious Jackson" stated in an MTV interview that Laura Nyro was the biggest influence on their music! I'm not familiar with this group at all, but my daughter sang a couple of lines from one of their songs, and what a surprise! It sounded so much like one of Laura's songs! Before I go, I must share how tickled I am by my poster and little program. I thought that the program was lovely. What a pleasant surprise to read new Laura lyrics. But the biggest thrill of all for me so far this holiday season was hearing Laura's "Christmas Song". Am I just biased, or is it about the best cut on that cd? which is a pretty decent Christmas cd all around, I thought. Music.122.578: Robin Barratt (robinb) Wed, 17 Dec 1997 17:22:54 CST (26 lines) I first listened to Joni when Court and Spark came out...Did someone post that that was 20 years ago?!! Argh! My favorite Joni album is Hejira--I was in high school then and all that travelling sounded romantic (still does!). I really knew Joni as songwriter before that because I listened to Judy Collins...I was aware of Laura as songwriter, also, at the time, and I had heard the First Songs on cassette. But I don't think I was ready for Laura--I see her as being more direct than Joni... Chuck, along with listening to people Laura loved (I recently discovered Chaka Khan that way) I listen to people who have been influenced by her, for example Rickie Lee or people who have made cover versions of Laura's songs. Sometime back, one of the Tribe mentioned here that Luscious Jackson had been influenced by Laura--and right then I found I could get their first EP for $5 off through a Music Blvd promotion...They don't *sound* like Laura, but like her they are influenced by contemporary African-American music (in their case hip hop) and there's a feminist "message" to their music, which sometimes mixes sexuality and "religion"--as in Wanting it More, where they say,"Only a roll can save my soul" and sound like they mean it. Their straightforwardness reminds me of Laura...Has anyone heard their current album? On the subject of Joni again...You must hear Cassandra Wilson's version of Black Crow on Blue Light Til Dawn! She also does Tupelo Honey on that album--it's melting! I don't know about any other bands doing that. I just wish the pics were bigger! It's hard to tell who is who sometimes. :) They're cute either way though. I thought the girls didn't meet until their early teens but Jill and Kate look about 5 or 6 in the Modern Dance class photo. heheheh Anyway...listening to the album now. Almost done with it. It's always nice listening to the album for the first time...too bad you can never repeat that "first listen." :) After the first listen I like to repeat it until I get more used to it and learn the lyrics as soon as I can and then eventually the bass tab hopefully. It's really good though...hard to describe. All their CD's sound so different from each other but you guys all know that anyway. haha. OK....have a great day everyone and go get the CD if you haven't already!
